I would love to join. Any suggestions?on a 10M rig that is inexpensive and HOA?/ Wife approved antenna. I only have 2M radios currently.?
?
My intent is to get an ICOM (or something) and build an offset Dipole or test out my Rain Gutter Antenna idea, once I have some free cash. Hoping to make General before the end of the year.? ?

开云体育Good Morning Michael, ??????????????? I am happy to see you asking for inputs and as things develop you will see many opinions.? ??????????????? My first suggestion is not to get JUST a 10 M rig, there are some out there but will only be in the outdated used market, and when you get your general ticket it will sit on the bench not ?used for a few more years until the bands open up more. ??????????????? Second suggestion to ?look around for a second hand 100 watt rig such as an IC-718, and have another HAM friend help you proof it before you buy.? The IC-718 has been around for ever and is still on the production line and sells new for around $600.00 so watch for over priced used ones. ??????????????? Third suggestion you can make a 10M dipole for near nothing and is only just under 17 feet long and can be very wife/HOA friendly with optional configurations.? With a resonant antenna you will not need a tuner at this point. ? Here to help David N2RSN?? n2rsn@... ? ??????????????? ? 开云体育I will reiterate what Dave, N2RSN, stated. Getting a "cheap" rig
is near impossible these days. And, this holds true for many
hobbies. A IC-718, TS-430, FT-857, FT-897 and, several others, are
fine 160 to 10 meters rigs. there's quit a list of used rigs to
fit your budget. You have to look for them and, when found, jump
on it. They won't last more than a couple of hours at best. If
possible there are several models with built-in or attachable auto
tuners. A manual tuner is cheaper in some cases. After 40 years in
the hobby and, having my own shop. I've refurbished, repaired more
rigs than I care to mention. I only bring this up if you want the
rig you choose to be tested. I have a full bench more than capable
of testing it for you for no charge. Many older rigs will need
more TLC than the newer ones. Parts change value over the years. I
just finished aligning a IC-7600 that's not that old but, it was
out of tolerance. I'm more of a tech guy. I get my thrill watching
the needle rise, as they say. And, my bench is never clean. Think
about why. My days are getting numbered at 73 years of age. I
can't do the new SMT. Even with the binocular scope and soldering
equipment it's become way too, small and crowded for me. As far as antennas go, you're going to have a tough time with an HOA. As we hams know, they think they own you and, your property. You may get a OFC antenna up and they won't mind. I suspect otherwise but, hope for the best. I'm trying to be realistic and not rain on your parade. Depending on how adamant the HOA is, you may end up going mobile HF. I know of several hams in your situation that did just that. It's a bummer to have to go out to your vehicle in the winter to talk on HF but, it is what it is. We hams are here to help. Any advice or help you need just give a
shout. 73 Dan N0FQN On 8/17/2021 8:15 AM, Michael F
