hiding the trailer

William P Groomer, KA6KBY

I went to the cityfest to volunteer at the trailer.? Our President and Walt were busting butt putting it together.?
But...... I wonder how many guests actually talked with any one or got a demon of what we are about.
The trailer was almost hidden behind other displays. And barracaded by chairs and sun shades from other particpants. Access for pedestrians was almost non existent.? ?
Suggestion, next time we want to show off our equip and skills we fight for a spot with easy access for foot traffic. last resort, signs to a foot path and infor sign saying what we offering.

Bill,

Great seeing you Saturday.? Thank you for stopping by and hanging out for a bit.

The location and setup wasn't ideal but we did see a little traffic and even got a couple people on the radio (10m).? Thanks to Eric W6HIH for being on the other side for those interactions.? :)

Terry/KA6DNO was there and instrumental as well.? I think you probably missed him when he snuck out for a bit to run home.

Turns out, we were actually in the wrong spot.? We were supposed to be in a somewhat larger space just across from where we were.? That would have been much better for public interaction.

Volunteers are key as well.? We need more than just 2 or 3 people there.? It takes people to setup, reach out to the public (stand out there and interact or draw people in), run radios, monitor equipment, safety, etc..

I'm not sure if the club has done events like this in the past.? In the couple years I've been a member, the primary focus has been on Field Day, Rim Run and the Snowflake parade so this was something "new" for us.? Aside from Field Day, these events are more in support of an event versus promoting amateur radio.? Yes, every event should be an opportunity for promotion but I'm not sure it's been that way nor are we really setup for that.? Even the Field Day location can be a challenge to draw people since it's a bit out of the way.? This is something that's been discussed but no changes have been made.? Something we need to consider with a location is the RF conditions (interference/noise), access, grounding, overhead utilities, etc..

One of the things we've talked about within the club leadership is getting the marketing collateral put together so we can hand out flyers and have better outward facing signage and such.? Seeing some of what CERT and SAR have was super helpful.? I'm sure the ARRL has some flyer information we can have printed.? We can also make some club flyers.? Coming up with some giveaway SWAG like pens or notepads or something would be nice as well.

I'd like to see us have a couple pop-up tents and some folding tables (think 4'x8' plastic) to setup gear and facilitate better interaction with the public.? The pop-up tent would have our logo, website and club name on it.? Some with a banner or two.

A bit of a bigger ask would be a couple large screens that are viewable in daylight conditions.? Something we could put a band scope/SDR onto or maybe a satellite tracker or something.? Something with a "WOW" factor.

Having club members out there to help with guaranteed contacts is helpful as well.? As we all know, calling CQ and band conditions can sometimes make contacts take a bit.? Having near instant contacts pre-arranged can be very helpful and impresses people a bit more.? That takes good volunteers and coordination.

Overall, it was a good experience and showed us where some deficiencies are.

Again, great to see to you Saturday.? Hope to see you at Field Day and club meetings.

Thanks,
Charlie / K7AKT

Charlie,
I saw the trailer tucked behind the CERT @ SAR folks, but the few times I walked by I did not see anyone around to chat with.? ?I would have to agree the location was definitely not ideal.
Live, learn and move forward to improve things for the next public event.? ?
I personally didn't know anything about needing volunteers for the event.? But this is my own fault as I am not active in the meetings and rarely look at this platform for information.? I plan to change this and participate as I can.
?You have some great ideas, I think the big screen would do a great job of attracting people as there curiosity would likely get the best of them.
