#Baluns #baluns

Hello everyone.

Nearly two years ago I promised a balun class where we would learn a little bit about baluns and construct a 1:1 current balun.? I have enough stuff to build about 10 of them.? The following expressed?some interest in building one of just learning about them:

Robert Edgar, AG7FR
Marshall J Alexander, KJ7TRW
Wesley W Owen, KJ7RTL
Dale A Severns, KJ7RGW
Charles J Boening, K7AKT
Lisa Johnson, K7NSP
James A Pence, KJ7UPY

The cost of materials is about $30 (mostly the ferrite core)

The balun should be good for a few hundred watts (not legal limit) 160m-10m

Attached is the QST article that describes the project.

Where: my workshop; 2602 Wiard St, Klamath Falls, OR 97603

When:? This Saturday, February 23rd at 10:00 AM

I have room for a couple more people.? Let me know if you want to join.

73,

Jim WO7V

Re: Unsing PoE creativly in the shack

Found an option to a hat for powering USB mini or micro 5v devices. It is a PoE breakout adapter splits out the Ethernet and power and drops it to USB voltage. I picked up 2 PoE to micro USB from Amazon to power some IoT devices.?

I have been working on my own station and on the packet/APRS upgrades for KBARA mountaintops and I have been trying to think of ways to reduce cabling as much as possible. The idea of using PoE to power single-board computers is nothing new and there are Hats commercially available to accomplish this task for some of these computers, but not all. I wanted to take advantage of a ready solution, but many are either expensive or not available for the computer I want to use. This led me to do a little research...

I have a rack-mount PoE injector that is underutilized and is considered a "smart" injector. It is supposed to be able to figure out what voltage is needed by the end device however, single-board computers are notoriously finicky about power so I wanted extra precautions not to blow them up. The injector puts out up to 48 volts with a cumulative max of 20 amps, that's a lot of computers and or phones. So how to go about using this power resource...
?
This post explains a little about PoE and what wires in an ethernet cable are used for PoE. It gives you an idea of how PoE can be tapped into for use with projects.
?
This post refines things from the previous a little specifically with the Raspberry Pi in mind but can be adapted to other single-board computers.
?
I plan on trying both the in-cable regulator and hat approaches. If you don't feel like working with the electronic components you can buy commercially available PoE injectors or taps, they are not that expensive, but you will have to find or build adapters to connect them to your device. This would be a good way to power something like a WSPR transceiver, an ADS-B receiver, or an SDR receiver with a Pi outside on a pole or tower.
?
This could be a fun build discussion at a club meeting if anyone is interested.?

Re: Unsing PoE creativly in the shack

Copy that, Dan.

When I ordered the TP-Link PoE Injector from Amazon, it stated on their webpage that Vietnam was the country of origin.? But then when the order arrived, it showed made in China.? So one more things I should be aware of in the future.

In any case, I think it might fun making a PoE ModeB for a Raspberry Pi 3B+.? I look forward to a building party when that happens.

Cyndi;

??? ??? ??? That's one of the biggest issues with them. 99.9% are made in China and they are noisy switching supplies. That's why they're cheap. No filtering is added. I'd build them with a analog supply. Yes, a little heavier and a bigger but, bullet proof and very quiet to start with.
