Here's an article from the ARRL addressing ACFI breakers. Not sure if it will help. They keep coming up with more dumb stuff claiming it's for your safety. More like it's for your money.

Current set up is a Yaesu FT-890 (borrowing from Al, thank you), 20Meter Dipole antenna handing off the side of my house.?

I see there is a grounding pin on the back of the radio that could be attached to something??? I also tired to find my houses grounding rod near the power meter to no avail, so I don't know how the house is bonded to ground (maybe water pipe?).?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.?

I will reiterate what Dave, N2RSN, stated. Getting a "cheap" rig is near impossible these days. And, this holds true for many hobbies. A IC-718, TS-430, FT-857, FT-897 and, several others, are fine 160 to 10 meters rigs. there's quit a list of used rigs to fit your budget. You have to look for them and, when found, jump on it. They won't last more than a couple of hours at best. If possible there are several models with built-in or attachable auto tuners. A manual tuner is cheaper in some cases. After 40 years in the hobby and, having my own shop. I've refurbished, repaired more rigs than I care to mention. I only bring this up if you want the rig you choose to be tested. I have a full bench more than capable of testing it for you for no charge. Many older rigs will need more TLC than the newer ones. Parts change value over the years. I just finished aligning a IC-7600 that's not that old but, it was out of tolerance. I'm more of a tech guy. I get my thrill watching the needle rise, as they say. And, my bench is never clean. Think about why. My days are getting numbered at 73 years of age. I can't do the new SMT. Even with the binocular scope and soldering equipment it's become way too, small and crowded for me.

As far as antennas go, you're going to have a tough time with an HOA. As we hams know, they think they own you and, your property. You may get a OFC antenna up and they won't mind. I suspect otherwise but, hope for the best. I'm trying to be realistic and not rain on your parade. Depending on how adamant the HOA is, you may end up going mobile HF. I know of several hams in your situation that did just that. It's a bummer to have to go out to your vehicle in the winter to talk on HF but, it is what it is.

We hams are here to help. Any advice or help you need just give a shout.

Good Morning Michael,

??????????????? I am happy to see you asking for inputs and as things develop you will see many opinions.?

??????????????? My first suggestion is not to get JUST a 10 M rig, there are some out there but will only be in the outdated used market, and when you get your general ticket it will sit on the bench not ?used for a few more years until the bands open up more.

??????????????? Second suggestion to ?look around for a second hand 100 watt rig such as an IC-718, and have another HAM friend help you proof it before you buy.? The IC-718 has been around for ever and is still on the production line and sells new for around $600.00 so watch for over priced used ones.

??????????????? Third suggestion you can make a 10M dipole for near nothing and is only just under 17 feet long and can be very wife/HOA friendly with optional configurations.? With a resonant antenna you will not need a tuner at this point.

?

Hello Everybody,

?

When I was living in the Portland?area about 10 years ago one of the local hams held a weekly net on 10 meters.? The main purpose was to encourage the local hams that held a Tech license to get on HF.? Did you know that it is legal for a person holding a Technician class license to operate on 10 meters using? the SSB phone mode between 28.3MHz and 28.5MHz?? The discussions were mainly technical?related to some aspect of the ham radio hobby; mostly with information for persons?wanting to upgrade to General.? I was a regular participant and even though I didn't need to upgrade I found the discussions quite interesting.??

?

I was wondering if there is any interest in starting a similar net here in the Klamath Falls area?? I was thinking 8 pm local time on Mondays but am open to suggestions.
