Every ham that operates HF will eventually find the need for a Balun.? What does a Balun do?? Why would I ever need a Balun?? What are the different types of Baluns?? What is the difference between a Voltage Balun and a Current Balun?? Here is your chance to find out the answer to at least some of these questions and end up with a Balun to use at your QTH.? For those of you who are members of the ARRL, there was an article in your April 2021 issue of QST on page 61 describing the Lake City Radio Klub (LARK) efforts in South Dakota replacing the baluns on their dipole antennas.? What is described is essentially a Balun construction and testing exercise.? ?I thought the local hams might benefit from a similar exercise to build their own 1:1 Current Balun that will handle legal limit power from 160m through 10m.? I have purchased enough materials to construct 10 of these Baluns.? I'm going to reserve 4 of these for myself and the club.? Thus, on some Saturday after Field Day this summer I will be hosting a workshop in my shop to construct Baluns.? ?This workshop will be limited to 6 persons and the cost will be $30 to cover the cost of materials.? Not bad for something that would normally cost you close to $100 if you were to purchase it.? So reserve your spot now.? Details of the exact date will be determined based on the number of respondents.??

BTW, you don't have to purchase and build a balun you still welcome to sit on the in on the disertation?but space is still very limited so please respond stating that you will NOT be purchasing a balun.

#Contesting #contesting

For those of you that are chasing paper such as DXCC or WAS there is no quicker way to obtain these than jumping into the contest arena.? Be careful though as contesting can become rather addictive.? When searching for Worked All States using contests state-sponsored?QSO parties are very good at grabbing that state you have been trying to get into your log.? That being said today happens to be one of the better ones, the 7QP QSO party which to those that don't know stands for the call area number 7 QSO party.? It includes all of the states in call area 7 which by the authority of the Federal Communications Commission, Oregon just happens to be in!? In addition to 7QP, there are also QSO parties in all the states of New England (CT, ME, NH, RI, VT) Delaware (which is always difficult as I am sure only 3 hams live there), and Indiana.? Generally, Indiana is an easy state to get into your log but the states in New England arent.? The 7QP contest is sponsored?by Dick Frey, K4XU who lives up in Bend OR.? Below is some more info for those interested.

73,

Jim WO7V

Are you ready for 7QP?

Checklist:
??? Saturday May 1st reserved for 7QP operation
??? Radio working on all bands
??? All antennas up and ready
??? Logging program installed, (N1MM+, N3FJP,? etc,)
??? Radio connected to computer
??? 7QP website checked for needed Oregon counties
??? Going mobile?
??? ??? Radio installed and antennas tuned
??? ??? Driver or copilot rounded up
??? ??? Route planned
??? Notify 7QP of your intended operation at?7qpops@...
??
No, you don't have to put in a full 18 hour effort. We just want Oregon to be well represented. This is your chance to be DX for a day.The weather will be nice and we have reserved an extra sunspot just for the occasion.

We still need a few counties, like Washington, Jackson, and Umatilla to insure we have all 36 Oregon counties on the air. Check out the?page on the 7QP web site.? Got questions?? Look at the??on the 7QP site or send an inquiry to?info@....

7QP is now the second biggest QSO party in the country. California is still #1, but we keep trying.? I'm looking forward to hearing you!

We still have a few Arrow #J-Pole antennas left! #j-pole

The club has recently purchased few J-Pole antennas from Arrow to make available to local hams at a reduced price.? These are about 2/3 of the $60 price that Arrow will charge you; plus there are no shipping charges!? These antennas are dual-band and cover the 2m and 70cm bands.? In the past, it was popular to construct these out of copper pipe but with the price of copper nowadays I seriously one could be constructed that matches the performance, quality, and integrity?of these Arrow J-Pole antennas.? So if you are interested in purchasing one of these $40 antennas send me an email direct WO7V@... we will work it out.? So far we have sold 5 and only have 5 left so pick them up while you can!

Making special interests easy to find: The Hashtag

Greetings All,

Hashtags are a great way to identify special interests and to filter them from the rest of the traffic. With any luck, the Hashtag menu item on the left will start to look like a topical directory. I will start the ball rolling with a few of my special interest areas.

I heard your Ex was found in Siberia... so don't move there.
Oh yeah, and she has a radio (so this message remains "radio related".

Hello,

You have been invited by Jim English to join the Groups.io group [email protected].

The following message was included by Jim English:

Hello Everybody,

I thought it would be useful to set up a reflector so we can easily exchange notices, questions, equipment for sale, flames, and everything I haven't thought of.? This notice will give you the 411 on how to join.? If everything works well we should invite the club members to join also.? Once all the club members are on board it will then be very easy to post to the entire club.??

So please join and let me know what you think.

First post to KBARA

Hello Everybody,

If I had known how easy it was to set up an email reflector I would have done it a long time ago.
