Moderated How to make JAWS Key + F3 do repeat last JAWS Find rather than bringing up the Virtual HTML Viewer?
For almost as long as I've been working with JAWS, and only changing recently, one invoked a JAWS Find with JAWS Key + Ctrl + F and then, after having found the first instance, hitting JAWS Key + F3 was JAWS Find Next.? This followed the standard find paradigm for web browsers and other things where after doing the initial find with Ctrl + F, the F3 key was find next instance of last thing searched for.
?
Now, suddenly (or so it seems, I honestly have no idea exactly when the change occurred),? hitting JAWS Key + F3 brings up the JAWS Virtual HTML viewer, which is not what I want for that shortcut.? I wish to maintain the parallel between standard browser find and JAWS Find as it always had been.
?
What I can't seem to locate is where I'd assign JAWS Key + F3 back to being JAWS Find Next.? Any assistance appreciated. |
开云体育I always used F3 in a browser, not Insert F3. And for the find command in a browser, I always used Control F. Have you tried JAWS keyboard manager? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Bit Bucket via groups.io

开云体育If you open the jaws menu with insert=j and arrow down to utilities, right arrow to open it and arrow down to keyboard manager. Once you hit enter to open keybaord manager, try typing jaws find and that should jump you down to the related keystrokes. Arrow down to Jaws find next. Mine is set to insert+f3, but I may have put that back because I recall either earlier in Jaws 2025, or more likely in Jaws 2024, this got changed. I hope this helps get you where you need to be. ? ? ? Richard, USA "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian." -- Pope Francis ? The only time I use insert F3 is in email
messages.
On web pages or in a document, just F3 will
repeat.
Likewise, you only need to use control F to find,
unless you are in an email, and then it is needed to use the insert, so you
don't make a forwarded message.

开云体育People are probably doing this with the insert key
because it seems that you have to use the insert key in NVDA, which I find
annoying.

Thanks very much for the tips on what to look for.? ?There are times where I definitely want a JAWS Find rather than a browser find or native program's find.? And I want the JAWS Find next to remain parallel to the "just F3" find next, which it's not these days.? I have no idea why they chose to change this after heaven only knows how long of it working with JAWS Key + Ctrl + F to initiate and JAWS Key + F3 to repeat. |
开云体育Here’s the correct use of F3 for a JAWS repeat find, which has been in effect for as long as I’ve used JAWS: ? When in MS Word, add the JAWS key. I believe this is the only program where it’s required, but other exceptions may be other word processors and possibly Notepad. When searching a Webpage or an Outlook email F3 must be typed alone. In these contexts, when the JAWS key is added, another function is performed. ? This inconsistency troubled Big Bucket, alias Brian Vogel, in the past year. I hope Vispero makes no changes. ? Well, you've gotta love FS sometimes.? I've installed the May Update of JAWS 2025, and this is in the JAWS Keystrokes document:
?
Web Browsing Keystrokes
General
Virtual HTML Features? ? ? INSERT+F3?
JAWS Find Next and Previous? ? ? F3 and SHIFT+F3? ?
but later
?
Informational
JAWS Find? ? ? CTRL+INSERT+F? ? ? ?CAPS LOCK+CTRL+F?
JAWS Find Next? ? ?INSERT+F3? ? ? ?CAPS LOCK+F3? JAWS Find Previous? ? INSERT+SHIFT+F3? ? ? CAPS LOCK+SHIFT+F3? ?
?
Nothing like saying that the same keystroke, INSERT+F3, does different things.? So far, I've only had it bring up virtual HTML features, which it did not do in times past.
