desktop icons 2
Well after all the long instructions on how to get my desktop icon back, looks like I just didn¡¯t know how to drag the icon from the program in the start menu. Someone did it in split seconds. There must be a way to do that with Jaws but I did not know how. I will get a ¡°laptop buddy¡± through a great volunteer organization soon, and then I ought to be able to have a simple way to create a hot key again. I thought it was through properties but I guess my abilities using Jaws are too basic to remember this many years later how to do it. The speaker is giving out on my laptop at the moment, so I hope this is proofed enough to be readable. Deidre

FW: Now Available: Second Edition of THE WINDOWS SCREEN READER PRIMER: ALL THE BASICS AND MORE 2
From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of David Kingsbury Sent: Friday, April 14, 2023 4:10 PM To: 'JAWS Discussion List' <[email protected]> Subject: Now Available: Second Edition of THE WINDOWS SCREEN READER PRIMER: ALL THE BASICS AND MORE Hi all, The second edition of my book, ¡°The Windows Screen Reader Primer: All the Basics and More,¡± is now out. Published by my organization, The Carroll Center for the Blind, It is available to you for free in Word and ePub formats. The book is meant to help JAWS, NVDA, and Windows Narrator users work more effectively with the most important PC applications, including the Windows operating system, MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint), and the three most popular web browsers (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox). Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive for Desktop, the three most popular cloud-based file-sharing programs, are also covered. So too is Adobe Acrobat Reader for accessing PDF files. A new chapter on participating in, scheduling, and hosting Zoom meetings is included in this second edition. So too is an appendix on using academic style guides for formatting Word documents. A glossary with over 100 definitions of computer-related terms and a set of practice exercises are also included. The book is intended for both beginners and intermediate users. While all the basics are covered, those already possessing a fair amount of experience using screen reader programs in the Windows environment will find useful tools and techniques to further enhance their skills. You can download the book and make a voluntary donation to the Carroll Center at: https://carroll.org/the-windows-screen-reader-primer-all-the-basics-and-more-second-edition/ On this page, please fill in some basic information about yourself, and activate the Submit button. You will be redirected to a page where you can make a voluntary donation. If you are not interested in making a donation, skip all the payment information fields and click on the download link. The book should then go directly to your Downloads folder in a ZIP file, containing three subfolders (chapters in ePub and Word formats, practice files), and a single file with the full text of the book in Word. Once downloaded, be sure to copy the subfolders to somewhere else on your computer. Do not leave them in the ZIP file or they will misbehave. If you have any problem downloading the book feel free to contact me off-list at David.kingsbury@.... I hope you find the book to be a useful resource. Please share it with others. lost my desktop icon and hot key 6
Hello all I¡¯m using a home edition 2021.2_ version of JFW with Windows 10 on a laptop. I can¡¯t get into the Jaws window anymore but can see it in the system tray. Something went terribly off when I let someone turn jaws off and manipulate my computer without speech. I could not monitor what she was doing. From that day on, Jaws will no longer load up with a hot key or by my going to the desktop, hitting the letter J and having it load up again. Both the icon and hot key are gone. The only way to get the computer to load jaws is if I turn the computer off then back on in which case Jaws automatically loads. Without being able to get into a Jaws window, like I used to be able to, I do not know how to create another icon and hot key. What else could be wrong here? The only thing I question is in system tray, it says to run Jaws from the system tray, but I don¡¯t know if that has anything to do with the issue. as a last resort, I still let someone turn Jaws off if a part of a screen is not accessible. Then I have to go through the whole riga ma role with shutting down the computer then starting again to get Jaws to load up. Also, people use my computer differently than I do, and inadvertently, things disappear or I¡¯m stuck in search or something else. Do any of you have obvious solutions that come to mind? Deidre

lost my desktop icon and hot key and how to get it back 3
Diedre The reason you cannot do those things anymore is because that person deleted Jaws from the desktop that had those commands tied to it. Here are your fixes Windows b to system tray and right arrow and find jaws and enter and context will open--but you need the option to open quickly--keep going Get hotkeys: Press windows key and type in Jaws and hear it, then app key and pin to taskbar- windows t to taskbar and right arrow and count icons until you hear Jaws and if it is in slot 2 then windows 2 will open it or whatever slot it is in with that number Also press windows key and type in Jaws and hear it then press app key and go to properties and enter then tab down to shortcut key (be VERY careful here) then do the command u want but choose the command you were using before as if you type in anything you want it may not work because that command is already assigned to something else--then tab to ok and enter to close. You now have that hotkey I will tell you that running from taskbar is the easiest--once it is pinned- windows t to taskbar if you pinned it the first directions above and count over, if it is in slot 2 then windows 2 will open it and context menu from now on. When you have to restart it, windows 2 will start it back up also Another option: windows key and type in jaws and right arrow and down to open file location or app key and down to open file location and enter to open--you hear your jaws so app key and up to create shortcut on desktop Hope that helps Denise M Robinson Denise M Robinson, TVI, AT, IT, PhD, CEO 425-220-6935 Remote Instruction around the world: Teaching Technology and all blind skills that gives you Vision www.yourtechvision.com YouTube Channel with hundreds of lessons for blind skills on the computer and more Specialist-Technology/Blind Skills | Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired 425-220-6935 | www.yourtechvision.com ¡°We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.¡± --Albert Einstein ¡°Helping the visually impaired see their world changed through technology¡± "While they were saying among themselves it cannot be done, it was done." --Helen Keller

Turning Off Protection of Links with Outlook 2
Hello, all. I am retiring today and need to unsubscribe or change email addresses for several lists I am on. Most lists have an unsubscribe link that is protected by Outlook 365. c gate external drive not responding 5
Hello friends A few weeks ago, I couldn¡¯t scan my c gate external drive but once it was figured out, it worked great. Now when I open my C gate to retrieve music, it seems when it is open, jaws tells me it is not responding. I¡¯ve rescanned it again and nothing was found, I¡¯ve scanned my pc and all is well. I am using the current Jaws, windows 10 and office 2016 with no issues. If anyone can assist me or give me any clues, I would appreciate it Sugar 'Forgiveness doesn't make the other person right, it makes you free. People will forget what you said... Reading Amazon Kindle Books With JAWS version 22 on a Windows 10 Laptop 11
Hello List Members Hope everyone is well on this list and I¡¯m just wondering if anyone is using JFW version 22 for accessing Kindle books? I¡¯m not sure if this is possible, but I have the Kindle reading app downloaded on my windows 10 laptop, and my sighted partner is telling me the text of the book is on the screen, but I can¡¯t seem to get JAWS to read it out? Many thanks for anyone¡¯s help. Best wishes Mark This email has been scanned by BullGuard antivirus protection. For more info visit www.bullguard.com

differences/similarities between Outlook and Thunderbird 2
Hi all, I just downloaded Thunderbird; I¡¯ve always used Outlook as my email client (I¡¯m currently using the latest version of Microsoft 365), not sure I¡¯ll switch to Thunderbird periminantly but thought I should have it in case I¡¯m ever unable to afford to renew the Microsoft 365 subscription or something. I¡¯m curious to know for anyone who¡¯s used both clients with Jaws what differences/similarities (if any) have you notticed between the two email clients? Also, where can I find/can anyone provide me with a list of Thunderbird keystrokes? Look forward to any info that anyone can provide me. Using latest versions of Jaws and Windows 11. Thanks Madison

Determining bit rate and sampling rate 2
Hello, Running Windows 10 with Jaws 2022. The audio programs I most frequently use are Winamp, Total Recorder, GoldWave, and Studio Recorder. In Jaws 2022, is there a reliable way to determine the bit rate and/or the sampling rate of audio files? Thanks. Don Roberts

New problem with JAWS tracking column headers
I was wondering if anyone else was seeing this, but we use PPM for project time keeping. It was working just fine until recently. Now, the column headers are all shifted to the left by one column. For example, the upper left hand cell, which would be like A1 in Excel, used to be blank and was the column header for the list of project. The next column to the right would be the first day of the time period, such as Friday, July 1. Now, Friday, July 1 is the column header for the list of projects. As I tab across the table, JAWS consequently announces Saturday when I¡¯m in the column for Friday, Sunday when I¡¯m in the column for Saturday and so on. Unfortunately this page is behind our firewall, so I can¡¯t share this page. I can¡¯t prove it, but this seems to have started with the June update for JAWS 2022. Before I post an issue with Freedom Scientific, I was wondering if anyone else was seeing this behavior. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Outlook

A problem where I'm deleting 2 messages instead of 1 when using JAWS and Outlook 3
This is kind of a strange problem, so I assume people will think it¡¯s just my imagination. ? I also just figured out a few things which might help to narrow down the problem and how to reliably recreate it. This is why I haven¡¯t reported it to Freedom Scientific yet, but before I do that, I want to see if it¡¯s just me or not. OK, here¡¯s what happens. Sometimes when going through my messages and using JAWS, I¡¯ll delete a message that I¡¯m reading with the control+d key sequence, and two messages will end up being deleted. The message I¡¯m currently reading and the next newest message. For this and other reasons, I uninstalled Office and reinstalled it, which I thought fixed the problem, but it started occurring again recently. This only happens when I come out of suspend mode on my laptop. I can fix it by stopping and restarting JAWS. I think the reason I stopped seeing it was because I stopped suspending my laptop for a while. Since it gets resolved by restarting JAWS, I¡¯m thinking JAWS has something to do with what¡¯s going on. It¡¯s also pretty consistently reproduceable, so if I were to suspend my laptop right now, I¡¯m sure that when it woke up and I went into Outlook, I¡¯d start getting two deletions for the price of one. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Outlook

Outlook.com email account issue/question 4
Hi all, About two months ago I created an Outlook.com email account because I was tired of the email account that I have with our ISP (which is the account that I'm sending this message from) either blocking messages or marking messages that aren't junk as junk even though I've marked them as not junk so many times. I hate worrying about whether or not I'll receive a message, which is why I decided to create an Outlook.com account. Anyway, now for my issue/question, with my Outlook.com account sometimes it'd let me send messages and other times they wouldn't go through and then my account would get locked because they thought I was doing something bad when I wasn't. The last time this happened I got a message telling me to sign into my account, but I've been avoiding doing this for fear that I'm just going to keep having the same issue which I really don't want to continue to have to deal with. I've called the MS Disability Answer Desk twice regarding this, and they've been able to unlock my account but both times they haven't told me why this happens or if there's anything that I can do to prevent this from happening in the future. So for anyone who has or has had an Outlook.com account have you ever had this issue? If so, any idea what I can do to prevent this from happening again? If no one else has had this issue then what did I do wrong? If anyone else has ideas please share them also. I really don't want to get rid of my account; and I really want to have all of my emails going to one address as checking two inboxes is annoying. I hate accessing mail on the web. Using latest versions of Jaws, Office 365 and Windows 10. Really hope someone can help me, any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks Madison

Windows 11 and Office 365 with Jaws issue 3
Hi all, I upgraded to Windows 11 yesterday and ever since I've noticed Outlook being really slow, I've had to close it out multiple times and I've even had to shut down my laptop a couple of times to get it to do anything. I have trouble arrowing through messages and when I delete one Jaws just seems to freeze up. I think this is a Jaws issue, when I use Narrator things seem to work fine, but I'd really rather not have to switch to it permently. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if there's anything that can be done about this? Using latest versions of Jaws (2022), Office 365 and Windows 11. Really hope someone can help me!! Thanks Madison
