Wind exposure

Hi all,
based on your experience, what is the best side of Hexbeam antenna to
expose to wind to offer less resistance?
If the wind is blowing from nord, should I point my rotator to nord?

Thanks and 73
Andrea, iz2lsc

Hello Andrea,

I'm not sure it makes much difference given the Hexbeam design (I have an NA4RR), but since I have a 10 element VHF/UHF beam mounted on the same mast below the Hexbeam, I point mine into the wind to avoid high wind loading on the VHF/UHF beam.? It seems to work well for the hex.

Mine has been up for 3 years and has survived 60+ MPH winds with no issues.

Hope this helps

Little difference in the wind loading in any direction as it is pretty much symmetrical in construction.
I would not worry about it at all.?

I agree. I'v e had an SP7IDX hexbeam up for 4 years with no problems.

Had my K4KIO up 10+ years and it survived 70mph winds as several hurricane near misses hit Oahu.? The center post got loose and wobbly so I replaced it with a new K4KIO this time adding 6m.? The old one is awaiting installation at my mom's house.? 73 de KH6DC

In my case the bolts at the rotator haven't held their place so the antenna has turned on its own for several months. By itself it turned the driven side of the antenna away from the wind. That fact may or may not help answer your question.

I think mine was taken out by a windblown branch, I've got repair pieces from the maker but I'm gun-shy about putting it up again in the winter time here in western Oregon.
So be careful of any FOD carrying trees or other.
FOD - Foreign Object Damage/Debris?

Thanks to those who answered my request.
I know that the hexbeam is almost symmetric, but maybe there is a
heading to stress less the connection between the wires and the
central post.

I think either towards the wind or away from the wind would be best as stresses would be along the wires rather than battering them side to side. Having said that I just lost my 20m element in the tremendous nor-wester we has a couple of nights ago. as the ring terminator broke off under the nut at the center pole end. I will replace them with heavier duty ones.

Hi Andrew,
I have the same opinion.
Even if the hexbeam is almost symmetrical, I should prefer the wind
hitting the antenna parallelly to the wires connecting to the central
post.
