Re: Telnet "keep alive"

KIR

Please explain this keep-alive feature. What is it, what does it do, and how can I control it? Thanks.

Michael was correct!

The issue isn't with Logger32. According to my SYSOP at the Telnet site,
the node software was "updated" a couple of days ago! The 9 minute
"keep -alive" was introduced from the node NOT by Logger32.

I can report that Logger32 continues to perform very stable and predictable
manner for me (with the exception of some already reported rig interface
problems) and, like others, I anxiously await the next version.

Thanks to all!

Rick,
Is it possible that your telnet cluster site is sending the keep alives
and not Logger? Just an idea. I know AR-Cluster has the ability to send
keep alives every 9 minutes.

Is there a way to get the program to lookup all of the old address
from my logs? It works great for all my new contacts but I would like
to fill in all my old contacts so that I might get caught-up on some
QSL cards being mailed out.

Re: LOGGER32 FILE BACKUP

Those COPY OF XXXXXXXXX files where in the Logger32 folder from the very beginning. After installing Logger32, I checked the Logger32 folder and there they were, so I figured they are supposed to be there. It sounds like you are saying this did not happen with your initial installation of Logger32.
My original install of Logger32 does not have any "Copy of ***" files
in it. A test install to a new directory did not have them either.

Al,

No - they shouldn't be there and I have no idea how they got there either.
I suggest you move them out of the logger32 directory into a temp folder
somewhere ( just in case) and then run logger32 to see if all is still ok.
When satisfied, then delete the temp folder

Al,

Thanks for the list. Now:-

The ISL files are not recorded as they are zero bytes. Yes we DO say in
the
help file that all 4 files should be kept together and the reason is
simple.
It is far easier to tell people to save ALL the files than to be
"picky".
You can bet your life that if we had said just save the .xxx, .yyy,.zzz
files then someone would save the wrong combination and then they would
be
in real trouble. So it is much easier to say save them ALL in the groups
mentioned in the help file.
So from the above items 07, 27, 31, 36, 40, 44 and 50 have been dealt
with
(7 files).

Just why you have file numbers 12 to 24 I don't know - and are
pointless.
How they got into your Logger32 folder I have no idea... ( 13 files).

As to the 4 Stats files - these can be regenerated by logger32 ( recalc)
so
there is no need to save them. (4 files)

So that covers the additional 24 files that you are recording - using
your
method..

Rick,
Is it possible that your telnet cluster site is sending the keep alives

73's

Michael, AA5SH

Recently I've been having some L32 telnet problems, 3 to be exact. Two of
the problems were not L32 related but minor problems related to the set-up
of my firewall (ZoneAlarm). The 3rd problem is less obvious.

No matter how I configure the Telnet "keep alive" it seems to always be
there (even when it's not checked). The default seems to be 9 minutes and
I
can't get rid of it!

Any insight would be appreciated.

Telnet "keep alive"

Rick Williams

Recently I've been having some L32 telnet problems, 3 to be exact. Two of
the problems were not L32 related but minor problems related to the set-up
of my firewall (ZoneAlarm). The 3rd problem is less obvious.

No matter how I configure the Telnet "keep alive" it seems to always be
there (even when it's not checked). The default seems to be 9 minutes and I
can't get rid of it!

Any insight would be appreciated.

Re: LOGGER32 FILE BACKUP

Geoff Anderson

Al,

Thanks for the list. Now:-

The ISL files are not recorded as they are zero bytes. Yes we DO say in the
help file that all 4 files should be kept together and the reason is simple.
It is far easier to tell people to save ALL the files than to be "picky".
You can bet your life that if we had said just save the .xxx, .yyy,.zzz
files then someone would save the wrong combination and then they would be
in real trouble. So it is much easier to say save them ALL in the groups
mentioned in the help file.
So from the above items 07, 27, 31, 36, 40, 44 and 50 have been dealt with
(7 files).

Just why you have file numbers 12 to 24 I don't know - and are pointless.
How they got into your Logger32 folder I have no idea... ( 13 files).

As to the 4 Stats files - these can be regenerated by logger32 ( recalc) so
there is no need to save them. (4 files)

So that covers the additional 24 files that you are recording - using your
method..

I have the following questions:

1. The help files and frequent mentions on the reflector state that all
four of the ISD, ISF, ISL and ISM files should be kept together. Why are the
ISL misssing from from the Logbook Zip and User Files Zip files?

2. Is it not necessary to copy the Copy of xxxxxx files? Apparently not as
they are contained in the User Files Zip file.

3. Whay are the Stats32.xxx files not included in the User Files Zip file?

Al,

I don't know that you are missing anything. What I'm interested in is
the
list of files you are recording which Logger32 doesn't. Now I know I
should
be in a position to do this comparison, but the truth is that I have so
many
files in my logger directory from trying to sort out other peoples
problems
that I don't have a "virgin" set either in the main directory or in the
zipped files. The only way I could get back to this is to clear
everything
out and do a re-install - and I really don't want to do that at the
moment!!
So if you could tell me what the differences are please, I
can then tell you if you need to save them of not. If Bob has forgotten
to
include some essential files, then I would like to know and the matter
can
be corrected.

The file for the Logbook contains 3 files. Is the ISL not needed? The
file
for the User Files contains 30 files. For a total of 33 files. When I
copy
all the ISD, ISL, ISM, INI and DB files, I get a total of 52 files.
Maybe it
is not necessary to copy the COPY OF XXXX.ISL, etc. files. What am I

Geoff Thanks for trying that for me. I got it to work, but I found I had
to rename all the Logbbok32 files. (appended an 'x') NOW the real trick
would be, remote desktop share, control radio from other room. Soundcard
interface for audio. Anyone give that a try yet?

Re: Setup

Geoff Anderson

Arend,

Logger32 does NOT overwrite DLL or whatever unless the installer allows it
to do so. For every file that Logger32 finds it ALWAYS asks the question.

As for most amateurs using Xp - well just try writing something that is Xp
specific and see how many grumbles you get! No - I'm afraid I cannot agree
with you on this particular point.

Hi Gary,

W2000 does not allow you to overwrite DLL's (thank god) so it will replace
the overwritten systemfiles with the original ones and nothing changes...
maybe you should try to install w2k service pack first.
In general I will not install software that tries to overwrite system
DLL's
with W95/W98 trash.
It is not a recommendation that L32 is developed for W98... there are
better
Windows versions around today.
Don't think that most HAM's stick with W98.... most visitors to my web
pages
use XP already.

I have had Logger 32 running under Windoze 2000 successfully.
Unfortunately
I had a hard drive problem and had to re-install everything. Now,
Setup
tells me that some of my System files are out of date and offers to
update
them if I select yes then shut down and restart. when I run Setup
again,
it
gives the same result. Am I doing something wrong?

Re: LOGGER32 FILE BACKUP

Mecozzi, Al

Hi Fabio:

1. I notice that all of the ISL file have a zero file size. If there is a description of the these files in the Help section, I missed it.

2. Right after I installed Logger32 for the first time, both the original and copy of files were present in the Logger32 folder. A puzzlement to me.

3. It has been stressed often that the ISD, ISF, ISL and ISM files should be kept together. At least that is what I understood.

Thanks for the feedback Fabio. It maybe that Geoff can shed more light on this.

I think that the "Copy of xxxxxxxxx" files are not part of the Logger32
"original" distribution but created by a copy&paste action, maybe to have
another copy.
Are you sure that the "Copy of ...." files are identical to the
corresponding files? I think they are not updated...so they could be an old
copy of your logbook.

I think because they can be recalculated from the menu
(Tools/Maintenance/Recalc stats)

To stop Logger32 from bringing the QSL_VIA field forward,

From the Log Entry window, RIGHTCLICK
Select Setup > Setup QSO Mask > Uncheck the QSL_VIA field.

This should stop Logger32 from bringing the QSL_VIA info forward to
the new qso.

Hope this helps!

Re: Mapping data path to other pc

Bill,
Absolutely I'll give it a try, in fact, I do this sort of thing often.
Check out WinVNC here:

It lets you log into another machine and access it as if you were
looking at that machine's desktop. You can get it in various flavors:
Windows, Linux, and Solaris. I have used the windows and Linux versions to
log into my Windows box from Linux and vice-versa. It may not be exactly
what you have in mind, but it does the trick. You can't drag files from
that machine to your desktop very easy (but it can be done), you just have
to think 'inside the box' for a change.

Geoff Thanks for trying that for me. I got it to work, but I found I had
to rename all the Logbbok32 files. (appended an 'x') NOW the real trick
would be, remote desktop share, control radio from other room. Soundcard
interface for audio. Anyone give that a try yet?

Hi Herman,
actually that is a know problem that will be fixed in the new (official) release.
For now, a workaround is available: you need to use the colon ( : ) as time separator. You can change it in the Windows settings and that should resolve your problems.

the problem here is with the field in the logbook page <QSLMSG>
Iput in tha box info about qsl managers.
Sometimes without write anything there the program automatic puts

manualy , how can i solve this problem??
did anyone has the same with me??
The QSLMSG field is QSL MESSAGE not qsl manager. The QSL_VIA field
is
for qsl manager, route etc. Notes may also be used. QSLMSG is for
info
printed on the qsl card such as "Thanks for the XXX contest qso".

Re: Setup

Gary and Julie Burow

Geoff, as per the original e-mail, the setup program said that some of my
system files needed to be updated and offered to do it for me if I shut down
the computer and re-started.

I HAD to try again to see what had happened. As it turnes out, nothing
happened and I was no furthed down the track.

Fortunately, I had an image of an earlier version of a Win 2000 installation
and reverted back to that and it worked so obviously something had gone
wrong with the system.
Tnx fer reply

I have a couple of questions here:-

1) Logger32 was (and is) being developed on a Win98SE system so the included
files would be from that era. Now what its the announcement actually
saying/ Is it the the files you have already are more up to date that those
provided or is it the other way round? If your files are more current, then
keep them.

2) You say that when you run setup AGAIN .... Why do this? Is Logger32 not
running for you - and if so, what is the problem?

I have had Logger 32 running under Windoze 2000 successfully.
Unfortunately
I had a hard drive problem and had to re-install everything. Now, Setup
tells me that some of my System files are out of date and offers to update
them if I select yes then shut down and restart. when I run Setup again,
it
gives the same result. Am I doing something wrong?

I have the following questions:

1. The help files and frequent mentions on the reflector state that all four of the ISD, ISF, ISL and ISM files should be kept together. Why are the ISL misssing from from the Logbook Zip and User Files Zip files?
I don't know, but I think that this could be a bug...

2. Is it not necessary to copy the Copy of xxxxxx files? Apparently not as they are contained in the User Files Zip file.
I think that the "Copy of xxxxxxxxx" files are not part of the Logger32 "original" distribution but created by a copy&paste action, maybe to have another copy.
Are you sure that the "Copy of ...." files are identical to the corresponding files? I think they are not updated...so they could be an old copy of your logbook.

3. Whay are the Stats32.xxx files not included in the User Files Zip file?
I think because they can be recalculated from the menu (Tools/Maintenance/Recalc stats)

Re: Setup

Hi Gary,

W2000 does not allow you to overwrite DLL's (thank god) so it will replace
the overwritten systemfiles with the original ones and nothing changes...
maybe you should try to install w2k service pack first.
In general I will not install software that tries to overwrite system DLL's
with W95/W98 trash.
It is not a recommendation that L32 is developed for W98... there are better
Windows versions around today.
Don't think that most HAM's stick with W98.... most visitors to my web pages
use XP already.
