In spite of that, Jevin produced a clean sheet, winning every round for a convincing victory. Karleta had a huge finish to move into second overall, scoring 450/500 on the last five boards. Glynneth were the only pair to win seven rounds, losing only to Elott and Karleta. Karleta were the only pair to lose only one round (against Diabot), finishing 4-1-4 with a very high number of draws, likely a record for a nine-round game. Perhaps the unusual part is that the E-W placements were all taken by the C stratum, which I do not recall as happening before. The hands were fairly tame with not many opportunities for brilliancies. Board 4 had some passouts and Board 13 was a rainbow hand. We almost had everyone in the same contract on Board 14. 12 tables The strangest thing about this game is that the four pairs that finished on top all lost the first round; Conndy even started with a zero but went on to be the only pair to win seven rounds. Harbot and Pharah both won six. Giselaine were undefeated through five rounds but hit a bad patch towards the end. Lernot were in second place overall after eight rounds. There were no slams made (two were attempted but were not good) but we did have the rare feat of game attempted in all four suits on Board 14 - too bad nobody tried 3NT. Clubs were unusually popular as trumps today; Eric, Gisela and Jane (M) both declared 5C on two consecutive hands. Indeed, at all three of their tables 5C was the contract more often than 3NT! We began with a slam hand that included a sad accident and had two hands with four doubled contracts as well as closing with a hand in which North held two voids opposite South's 6-5 in those two suits. But the high point of the game were the back-to-back slams on Boards 10 and 11, both of which were cold slams in a suit (barring bizarre distribution) but not 6NT and allowed declarer thirteen tricks when a finesse for a side queen succeeded.
