Karleta had a very solid and steady performance, only going down one trick for the whole game. Harbot and Mahn had reversed outcomes. After Heve had helped their friends by defeating Harob in Round 8 to allow Jerik to take the lead, Harob went back ahead on Board 17 when the limp club suit of 8542 opposite K73 produced two tricks for Bob in 3NT. Harob and Jerik both finished 7-1-1; Heve 7-2. The most instructive hand was presumably Board 13, on which we saw why not to bid 4NT as the stronger hand with a suit containing two top losers. Board 14 had the real slam but nobody was able to bid it - thirteen tricks were close but there was always a trump promotion. The ACBL is going to fine clubs that don't hold NAP qualifying games in the first week of July and August as well as June. Friday will have to be a game without Robots as well but then as far as I know we are good until August. Clubs used to have discretion in the matter but now we are being regimented. 9 tables The last board, on which almost every N-S pair played in 3NT, was dramatic. It seems that Keianne may have had a miniscule lead over Randi after Board 17. Randi made the brave decision to defend 2Hx at unfavourable vulnerability instead. They picked up +800 but Jevin matched that score defending 2Dx. Keianne snuck in for the win, though, when their declarer in 3NT lost track of the ninth trick and let them set 3NT for the E-W top. Randi had the best round record of 7-1-1, including a draw against Jerik in which East pair got a top defending a doubled contract. Keianne finished 7-2; most of the other leaders won six rounds. Louebe, who played together because Robots were disallowed in this game as a NAP qualifying game, lost the first three rounds but won the last six for a good result. Lark had the lead entering the last two rounds but faded. For the second time in three weeks Shane had a shared top with Randi, this one from making the same balancing decision on Board 9. Attempted slams on Boards 8 and 12 did not succeed. There was finally a slam on Board 17 but there were multiple slams attempted and two of three different contracts were wrong. We almost had a flat board on #3, though it seemed that 4 and 5 also had strong chances of the same contract's being played at every table. I left two Average assignments in, rare for me, but one was a two-way finesse and the other a hand that could have been made by force but probably would not have been. Jevin were the only pair to go 7-2, losing only to Cinise and Harbot; Jamob also lost to Cinise and Harbot in addition to Jevin. Cinise and Harbot both lost to Owbot and Glynneth. there were a couple of close slams that were not attempted; the only slam bid had two top losers if the defence cashed out, and the opening leader had the critical ace-king. 11 tables Boric squeezed out a tight win, passing multiple pairs in the last two rounds, as did Mallys, both pairs finishing with 7-2 round records. All four human-Robot pairs finished in the top eight. The two Larbot pairs met in the fifth round with Stern, L defeating Sherman, L. Almost all the partials were instructive; we had coping with an opponent's takeout double, downgrading a potential 1NT opening bid, to transfer to a minor or not, whether or not to rebid 1NT with a singleton, and an eighth round all about balancing or pre-balancing. Board 13 had twelve sure top tricks but slam was reached only five times and two of the five Wests decided that not being able to find there wasn't a sure thirteenth trick and the potential pressure of having to find multiple discards made it worth bidding the grand slam. Xiaobot and Leighry went 7-2 in rounds, the rest of the top six pairs 6-3 or 6-2-1. The scores got closer at the end; Xiaobot lost the last round to Cinise while Jevin and Jamob both finished strongly over the last three rounds. Board 7 and Board 16 were the two most extreme hands of the day. On Board 7 N-S had a cold slam in either minor; one pair ended in 7C by accident but got the wrong opening lead and made it off a cashable ace (Fredda's favourite thing to do; she did it three times and it was done to her once, although that was her own fault). Heve were the only pair to win the first five rounds but went 1-2-1 over the last four, while Glynneth lost three of the first four rounds but won the last five. Board 17 presented what should have been a not-too-advanced finessing situation, but the hand was played correctly only by Rich and Jane (T). Conndy were the only pair to find the making 5C on Board 2. Board 12 had both a nice question of hand valuation and a fun ruffing finesse that reminds me of a pair of hands from 1984 and 1985.
