AL-811Question

I am repairing an AL-811 that was blowing fuses.

I found one of the 811 tubes had a short between the filament and plate.

My question is can I buy an 811A tube and run it with the two existing 811 tubes?

You can if they are good.? Have you checked them on a good tester.? My preference is to buy all three with matching attributes.? But, that is not necessary.? You ca replace the one that is bad.? But, be absolutely sure the other two are good.

Yes you can.but dont mix brands. Stick to Chinese, USA, Russia, etc

Also do not run at more than 450W out for longevity on the 3 tube amp (600W with the 811H) with import tubes as they are not true 811A's as built by RCA, etc.

?
A tube tester uses low voltage?to "test" emission which is far from what the tube does at HV and with RF.
?
Even my fairly high end Hickok 752A is only good to give a quick and basic answer ....if a 811/572B is dead or not, has a short or is gassy.
?
Many of the low end testers do not even have the ability to handle a 4A 6.3V filament.

I think somewhere in my ¡°paper¡± archives I have either a GE or RCA bulletins. I thought that one of them showed how to make a home-brew test jig that would adequately test emissions of transmitting tubes. Now I am going from memory but it had all the common tubes of the era and they even showed an 813 as part of the test. The bulletins are available on line to read. I suggest you try there.
