Hi Alek Greetings from Japan. If you can get old TS-520, TS-530, TS-820, TS-830, solution is easy. The meter unit is same, so replace the meter plate carefully. In Japan, on the internet auction, such used meter unit is in distribution enough. Regards. Re: Palstar 2500 repair
Thanks Gentlemen I will have a look over on those sites. Lou if you ever have time to open one of the amps it would be interesting to get a photo of the control board and / or get the voltages on the idc connectors. Some of the voltages are missing on this control board which I believe is the source of the issue 73 Brian VE7WO On Wed, Jan 31, 2024 at 10:53?AM Louis Parascondola via <Gudguyham=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: GS35b 432MHz oscillating...
:-)
It's been an eye-opener for me. You hear rumours about variability in Russian tubes but I haven't seen it directly myself before. The bad tube clearly has a perfect vacuum, the heater takes exactly 3A as expected, there are no internal shorts measured and it's perfectly happy at 4kV with no flashovers. I don't have a HiPot tester but I'd bet it passes. ...and yet, it's absolutely useless! Lesson learned. |

Re: Transformer "burn-in"
?Eons ago, Dahl used to offer his ham plate xfmrs in 2 x versions, impregnated or not.? Later on, only fully impregnated versions were sold.? Too many hams were storing old amplifiers and dahl xfmrs in un heated, damp garden sheds and garages etc.? ? When I bought my 253 lb Dahl xfmr ( $1410.00 new at the time)? around 1999 or 2000)? it was pumped full of the silicone varnish goop...done in a vacuum chamber.? The vac chamber was to get rid of any air bubbles, since air doesn't heat worth a damn, and just traps moisture. Then removed from the vac chamber, then baked in the kiln for 4 hrs.? ? Then run through a battery of various tests....like laying a dead short across the sec 1st, then applying 240 vac to the primary.? ? Dahl told me that the way he spec'd his plate xfmrs was.... it was based upon a 55 deg C temp rise over a 40 deg C ambient cabinet temp.? ?=? 95 deg C.? That's the outside surface temp.? Then add in another 10 deg C, deep inside the core....for a total core temp of 105 deg C.? ?Minimum insulation that could be used is called class A? (105 deg C rated).? Dahl did not go cheap on the insulation and used at least class B ( 55 deg C) or class C.? ? For the OP, I would just unbox the new xfmr....and let it sit at room temp for a few days before installing.? |
Re: GS35b 432MHz oscillating...
I have fixed it now, thanks.
Couldn't think what else to try, so I fitted a spare tube, cooked it overnight with heater only, now I'm getting 1.7kW out with my max. 70W? available drive. It's perfectly stable and docile, just like a triode amp normally is. Can't imagine what the fault inside the first tube is. I've written "NBG" all over it so it never wastes my (or anyone else's) time again. |
