Re: Hello and a question

David

In terms of reliabilty there is nothing to choose

Alpha didnt advertise their "brick on key" amps for a joke - they really can do it!

Particulary if the 76 has 3 valves go for it!

Spares are getting harder to find though

There is an Alpha 76 on the G3CWI selling site as well

Re: Hello and a question

Depends on what "cheaper" means.? Too many hams will cheap out at every possible opportunity, frequently to their detriment later.

You can see today that the Alpha has a much greater retained value.? It probably has better engineering.? Another consideration is the availability of replacement finals down the line.?

As a perennial contributor here used to say, "horses for courses."? Your considerations for amp purchase won't be the same as those of other hams.? If it's ONLY "cheap" -- then I have a D&A Phantom amp I'll sell for real cheap.

Once the group is migrated, all members here will automatically be members in the new group.? I would suggest that all uploads and photos be stopped until after the migration, as there would be a good chance they would be missed in the move.

Hello to the Brain Trust!

The following group has been set up and paid for...?/g/ham-amplifiers

The Auto-Migration should happen any day and as soon as that is complete I'll kill this one. A couple of people have already figured it out and signed up.

As a side note, they hold you hostage by making you pay for a yearly subscription ($220.00) to use their services, which I paid. While nobody will ever be required to pay to be a member here, any donation to help offset the cost would be appreciated. 100% of the money will be used exclusively for this group and once we reach $220 I'll let everyone know. I'm dino@... on PayPal and @DinoDarling on Venmo. Thanks!?

Cheap CB amps ar very useful for us HAMS

Clint, VE3CMQ

I have purchased several of the cheap solid state CB amplifiers.? These things will work anywhere from approximately 100KHz to 30+ MHz.? They are broad as a barn.? However, if you are going to use them on the HAM bands, you really should use a band pass filter.? Not using one will almost guarantee you will be transmitting on many bands at once!? I have modified several of these amps by installing a low pass filter board from a parts radios.? Most of the LPF's I have bought off EBAY will work, although some circuitry will need to be done to change the band of operation.? A simple switch on the front will work.? Maybe some simple frequency determination device would be able to automatically change the band?? I'll have to look into this down the road.? Radio control is pretty easy to do for ICOM radio's.? I am going to do this for my FT-817, once I get it working although that kind of gets away from QRP operation!

PDQ probably will require another trip (maybe not). No water was on the
reportedly wet tiles in the hall near the closet and bathrooms, but some
water does show up there when I wetted the kitchen walls. The mgr. that
was there is the main one for that restaurant and I instructed him to
tell his other managers to note when/if the water shows up-- some
caulking was recently done in the kitchen, which may have solved
some/most/all of the problem. I will call Mike to discuss. Let me know

Re: Question about HV transformer

Thanks Lou. I did a search based on component ID's, and found it was a
LPA-2 amplifier, from TMC. Two 8163 triodes.

Unfortunately, the manual lacks the schematic, but the power supply is
quite similar to LPA-1KC model (TMC also).

Many thanks

Sounds to me you would get around 3300 volts DC after a doubler
rectifier. ?The .3A is probably a CCS rating so at ICAS that¡¯s probably
good for .6 amp. ?In an amplifier running two 3-400 tubes that would be
an input power of about 1980 watts and probably 1100-1200 SSB would be
my guess. ?Lou

This HV transformer has two primaries (115 VAC each, 50-60 Hz), and one
secondary which states 1200 VAC, 0.3 A DC Doubler

How should I estimate the transformer ratings, in terms of power
capabilities?, I don't understand the meaning of that stated current
value.
