##? simple really.? His choke resonated at aprx? 117hz- 119hz..with just bleeder load.? Once the real load was

applied, the choke XL? drops a tiny bit... and? resonance? freq? increases a bit.? ?Once it hit? 120 hz... with a load on it,? all hell broke loose.??

##? He was? using the? classic? ? resonant choke - filter cap? config.... like henry radio and collins used...except they resonated on the high side of? 120 hz....? which increases in freq? even more..with? max load.?

##? In the above? resonant choke - cap? config, the? resonant choke is getting hammered? by? 60% ripple, coming out of the? rectifiers.? ? And the? ripple freq? coming out of the? rectifiers is? 120 hz...or? 2F.?

##? Think? of how parallel? resonant traps? work on a triband? yagi.? ? You end up? with? extremely high peak? V on the capacitor section of the trap....and extremely high current? flowing through the coil.? ?When the sign wave flips? polarity,? you get a huge? back emf from the coil..which charges up the cap.? ?The cap then discharges through the? coil..producing? high currents through the coil.? ?It just goes back and forth forever? ( with power applied..and a big load).?

##? The other issue with the classic? resonant choke - Cap? ?setup is the B+? is only .9 X xfmr sec.?

Henry radio used a 6000 vac? sec on it's? 8K ultra....fed into a FWB.... then into the resonant choke - cap? filter..and a big 300 watt? bleeder.? ? The 8 K ends up being just? 6000 X .9 =? 5400 vdc.... no load.? ?Which drops down to? 4800 vdc? with a 1.25A? load.? 6 kw dc input..and? 3.5 kw? rf output.? ?So it drops? 600 vdc... which is nothing to? write home about.?

##? A? 3600 vac sec? with a FWB..or a 1800 vac sec? and a? FWD? ?would have done the job... and a C input filter.?

##? Put the? $$$? into the xfmr.... not a? choke.??

Gotta run, a ton of stuff going wrong this AM.?

  • ?That will cook the resonating caps, and the Peak V across the resonating cap also goes high.?? The? circulating current through the choke can be as high, or higher, than the actual DC current passing through the? choke.? ? So now u end up with 2 x? currents? flowing through the choke..and they are additive.? ?So the..'fix'? is to resonate the choke a little higher..like? 122-125 hz.? • Ok,? reconfig,? with the C-L-C? setup? consisting of? 625 uf - 4H -? 1250 uf.... and? ?1.5 A CCS? CXR,? V drops? are? 14 volts more than the? high C? (1875uf)? case.? ( 14 vdc drop across the 9.56 dc ohm choke, with 1.5A? flowing through the choke).? ?Only difference is? 120 hz? ripple is now down to just? -131 db.... which is beyond absurd..max? gross overkill.... and all harmonics? well below that, equally absurd.?
  • So? no,? you? don't need a 127 lb? Dahl? 4H? hypersil? choke ( 3A? CCS rated).? ?It's a good choke though, runs 3 steps below? luke warm, with 3A? Their? 10 kva unit has a 49 ohm sec ( 4800 tap)... which is a helluva lot more than the 19 ohms on any? 4.8 kvac, 10 kva? pole pig.? ?I wish I had? 3 phase power available,? that would be another fun experiment.? ?Raw? DC on single phase? FWCT / FWB / FWD? has typ 62%? 120 hz? ripple.? ?On 3 phase, it's just 5%? ripple... so you don't need? much for a filter when using 3 phase...just a few? uf.?

Re: Test / GU74B tubes

Hi Jim,

The good thing about the sweet little GU74B tetrode tube is its stable high
gain in grid-driven AB1 configuration with a simple untuned swamped grid
input circuit....no messy band switching required on the input side.

Just a few watts drive from an SDR exciter pushes the HF amplifier's output
well past 400 to 500 Watts at which PEP output the tube will virtually last
forever.

You don't need a "sky high" idle current to get acceptable IMD equal to or
better than most solid state amps; just use some cathode degeneration NFB
and all's well on that score.

If you specifically want a squeaky clean state of the art signal then just
put your SDR exciter in "Pure Signal" mode and a feedback sampling coupler
on the amp's output.....then all IM products are negated for an exemplary
clean signal spectrum.

These military surplus tubes were once very low cost a decade or two back,
but sadly market prices have risen like they have done for all Tx tubes :-(

It's the old argument of selecting different horses for different courses
Jim....each tube whether triode or tetrode and the various circuit
topologies have their merits in particular scenarios and use cases.

The available tube choices are drying up nowadays for tube amplifier
aficionados....everything has either become damn expensive, or is in the
realm of unobtainium..... :-(

It is always good to hear from you Dave.

IMO there is nothing wrong with a bit of bantering around especially with self absorbed fools who profess to know so much about amps and tubes but know so little but never stop trying to impress others.

I let them rant on a few times but when my patience wears out I swing the Louisville Slugger. Some get the message but others keep coming back for more and still cant finish a coherent debate on the subject.

the Amps group where such uncalled for rude and crude ad hominem comments
are screened and deleted and rightly don't make it to the forum.

Indeed Joe, the forum has been quite slow since the sad demise of central
protagonist Rich Measures and the Rich / Carl sideshow jousts...

There's more interesting activity on the Amps group nowadays.

Yes, and George's recently publicised set of prescriptive rules and posting
guidelines are very befitting and appropriate..

Ham radio interest group forums are intended for friendly exchange of
discussion and sharing information relating to the topic; not for off-topic
noise and crass and uncalled for ad hominem attacks.

Speak to the topic; not gratuitously attack the person for holding view and
opinion different from your own.....

And King George III recently posted that he will be monitoring AMPS closely
and blocking ALL off topic posts! Gee, like so much bandwidth is used on
that long obsolete forum.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass Leigh.....bye bye.

There are several more modern AMP forums these days that allow pictures,
audio, and even allow off topics.

Re: Test #5

I made two posts last night and they have the correct time stamps of 12:18 and 12:28.? However, I went to bed a bit after 4:00 AM and they hadn't shown up here. As I use Charter as my ISP and Mercury Networks? For my mail and home page, the mail goes from Charter to Mercury via SMTP .? The post time stamp should be when I receive the post and it normally is, but not for those posts.

I have a GU-78B that has developed a grid short. I have determined the grid
short initiates about 2 minutes after power on and ends after about 5
minutes.
I have tried unsuccessfully to 'burn' the short by hooking up a 560?f
capacitor fed with 300vdc.
What other methods that can be tried to 'burn' this short?
