This group is for all folks running the original IBM VM/370 Release 6 operating system (or later (e.g. VMTCE (Community Edition)) on Hercules. Like the other early IBM operating systems this version has always been in the public domain and so can be freely distributed. The base version as supplied by IBM is lacking in many facilities. IBM solved this by providing additional extension products which were licensed and so are not available. There are however many user enhancements available which can be installed. In addition, in order to get users up and running quickly updated "releases" of VM/370 included the most popular updates are available for download, so novices can start to learn VM without having to delve into the system internals. It is intended that this wiki will provide information on the base release and these updates.
The available versions are here :-

Yet another RSCS question (noob alert sets off :-) )
Dear Forum, after having connected my two MVS installations via Bob's ingenious NJE38 a while ago, with one link to the hosting Raspberry OS via funetnje, I thought it was about time to attach my VM/370 system to this network, too. I'v tried to catch up with what has been posted here about RSCS but still do not get it right. My attempt of "configuring" RSCS according to RSCS.MEMO blew up my CP kernel custom DMKBOX logon screen but luckily I could gen it again. I wonder if the defaults of RSCS are good to go and one just has to add the device statement in the hercules config for dev 040 2703. I also noticed that in some post the connection to MVS is a RJE connection. Is that what RSCS is about when talking to MVS? I noticed that the NJE links are configured with the additional flag "tcpnje" and the example of RSCS talking to JES2 do not have that flag with the 2703 device. If RSCS is able to talk to NJE38, what does it take? Just that link config flag or is there more to it? I reckon that also a routing table must be set up. Is there a thorough documentation available from which I could piece everything together? Logo shown upon login not updated for spool output
Gentlemen, quite a while ago you've shown me how to change the "logon screen" for VM to a custom version. I recently made some minor changes, performed the steps and now VM starts with that minor change to the login screen. However, the print output still shows the customised but previous "banner" and I wonder if there is some other place to make changes which I simply forgot. The system has been re-ipl'ed of course. kind regards Michael -- TK5 on Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry OS "bookworm" TK4- on Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry OS "bookworm" VM/370 on Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry OS "bookworm" Lime and limpid green, a second scene Now fights between the blue you once knew Floating down, the sound resounds Around the icy waters underground Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania Neptune, Titan, stars can frighten (Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd)

VM/370 Bob Abele Version 1.1
2
I wanted to generate a copy of Bob's version 1.1 and of course got stuck. I do not remember what I need to do when DDR runs out of tape. Bob's instructions, in README_2.txt include: 5. in the telnet window you should see the prompt "ENTER CARD READER..." input 581 3420 output 131 3330 VMREL6 restore all (restore now takes about 2 minutes) input 582 3420 output 132 3330 CPR6L0 (restore takes another 2 minutes) 6. on Hercules: quit When I get DDR IPL'd and the first tape processed, I have the following on the screen. VM/370 DASD DUMP/RESTORE PROGRAM RELEASE 6 ENTER CARD READER ADDRESS OR CONTROL STATEMENTS ENTER: INPUT 581 3420 ENTER: OUTPUT 131 3330 VMREL6 ENTER: RESTORE ALL RESTORING VMREL6 DMKDDR710A DEV 0581 INTERVENTION REQUIRED And I am in a RUNNING state. Now what? Sorry. I just don't remember. ... Mark S.

VM/370 CE an05d SNA (via DLSw)
6
Dear Forum, a fellow board member on a German vintage computer forum, who has a 3174 and a Cisco Router asked me if it is possible to attach these to a Hercules emulator running VM/370. For the best of my knowledge, all 3270 in VM are locally attached. Is there a chance to configure such a SNA connection in VM/370 or is that only available in later versions of VM? So far, all examples on the Internet were targeting MVS 3.8j with TK4- and a Hercules with an updated 3705 device. Still kind of bumpy I daresay but working. However, that fellow keeps asking for VM, not MVS. kind regards Michael -- TK5 on Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry OS "bookworm" TK4- on Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry OS "bookworm" VM/370 on Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry OS "bookworm" Lime and limpid green, a second scene Now fights between the blue you once knew Floating down, the sound resounds Around the icy waters underground Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania Neptune, Titan, stars can frighten (Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd)

Thoughts regarding remote 3270 support
7
Is there a consensus opinion on supporting remote 3270 in VM Community Edition? Should it be supported (as much as possible) at par with local 3270 support? Should it be abandoned and either deleted or stubbed out as deprecated? I ask this because I'm working on a pretty major restructure to local 3270 support and noticed that one of the existing updates (HRC101DK) appears to have been abandoned for remote 3270s. A few other local 3270 updates have not even attempted to address remote 3270 support (e.g. MORETIME, Diag8C, etc) Thoughts? cheers, William

IBM Documentation Hidden At IBM
27
Did this by accident, and pulled up an old URL for https://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/ifc5g101.pdf and it actually pulled the manual into my web browser. So if you have URLs in your history, you still might be able to retrieve the manual. Too bad I don't have a complete dump of URLs to the documents. ... Mark S.

Current source for VM/ESA Manuals?
10
Hi All, I guess this question probably comes up a lot, but here we go again. :) I wondered if anyone had a good source for VM/ESA era manuals they could point me to? I've looked on Bitsavers but there doesn't seem to be much. I'm mostly interested in ESA because it seems both relatively easy to run on Hercules and likely to have manuals in original electronic format. The latter is particularly helpful for me as a totally blind user. OCR is not ideal. I know a lot of things used to be available from IBM, but they seem to move around a lot or vanishh without much fanfare. I'm particularly looking for electronic copies of any tutorial material, the general information manuals, concepts, and so on. I'm very new to mainframes as a hobby, though have a slight acquaintance with MVS and its ilk. Thanks much :) Best, Zack. P.S. I did find a thread earlier which linked to a giant Internet Archive directory, but that interface is absurd and I have no idea how to find anything in particular using the big table. -- Zachary Kline zkline@...

Which Hercules and which host?
9
This may be a dumb question, but I couldn't find anything helpful after searching here in groups and generally on the web. I'm wanting to rebuild my first serious shop in my home: VM hosting DOS/VS. I see that there are Hercules Aethra and SDL Hercules versions. Is there any reason to prefer one over the other for running VMCE? From my reading a while back, MacOS security is a pain in the butt for Hercules and some other software. While I'm a Mac guy these days, I have old but Windows 11 capable Intel boxes and a few of the various Pi boards, including a 4, available. Are Pis sufficient for VM and possibly DOSVS? Thanks.

IPCS? The Unwanted/Unneeded Application

RSCS Assistant
2
It's taken me a while to get this done, but I have created two EXECs. One for the access order for RSCS, RSCS1, or RSCSTST userids, and a second one to assemble the code, with or without Peter's modifications, and build the RSCS module to IPL. I have also included templates for the four COPY files which users use for control of their RSCS system: AXSLINKS COPY, AXSROUTE COPY, LAXLINES COPY, and TAGQUEUE COPY. Anyone having gone through this process, I would appreciate suggestions to improve this, as I would like to add it to the VM/370 CE distribution. Anyone wanting to try installing, I would appreciate knowing what isn't clear, could be better or easier to use. As a side note: The first EXEC can be called from VMSETUP EXEC, if you add 'EXEC RSCSACC RSCS"" under the -RSCS label. You may wish to comment out the ACCESS commands listed there. ... Mark S.
