Jim just how old is this laptop? And, ah, was XP native on it? Last year I bought a pair of Dell laptops from the VCF East events, and one of them, a Dell Latitude model runs Seven splendidly, and the earlier one, also same brand, runs XP poorly. Which is curious because that's the OS it was designed for. These are from the middle to the late part of the twenty year period for Dell laptops. Oddly enough, I run Slackware Linux, and it ran splendidly on the one I had before, even WiFi worked perfectly. Yes I needed to download the the tools and firmware to make the WiFi card work, but that was expected. And the one running Seven is in fact the guy Dell was selling after the model I had before, The big difference between those and the Inspiron families are the target audience. One is for lease/purchase and the other is for outright purchase. I am not a big fan of Debian based distributions, including itself, but I run one on the Raspberry Pi, but for Intel (or AMD) based platforms I prefer Slackware. However the problem is that it's not a supported one out there in the world of Linux supported by IBM and everyone else. Incidentally Fish my Dell Dimension still thinks yours is too young to work all night. This message will need to be interpreted by two monsters to two different people. And can be easily understood by someone who breathes through gills. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." Re: Need Advice on Ubuntu/Linux Distro
When I couldn't install Devuan in an old laptop, I went upstream to Debian (which Ubuntu is also based on) and filed a bug report that Debian 6 was installable. In the next version, it was fixed. By the way, Ubuntu 10 has the best user interface; the later attempts to creating something that works on a desktop, cell phone and tablet, as could be predicted, is less than optimal for any.
Upgrade on Debian or Ubuntu can be problematic. Archive the user data (/home of course but mysql squirreled its data in a less than obvious place, and all of /usr and /var could have necessary files, not to mention /etc and all of the application settings) and then cross your fingers. After spending a weekend rebuilding a mail server, the next time I said to myself, of course Ubuntu must have fixed their installer bug - can you guess the result? Which is better, traversing the application dependencies and only delete the files the maintainer says are obsoleted or?just empty the entire spool. In a flash. Debian has problems if you are updating after they have turned off their repositories for the versions, despite you downloading the archives and told your computer to use your local files. One winds up booting up into the standalone shell and informing the system which package is obsoleted and where the updates are. For days. I have a laptop which informs us that Ubuntu 12 is booting but after your log in, tells you that it is really Ubuntu 14. So I left it that way for grins and chuckles. Fedora is better for allowing one to use a local repository mirror, if a bit arcane. Your problem is probably a lack of device drivers. Finding the right files and moving to the computer with a updated install is a mechanical task. The last laptop I bought needed drivers and while I eventually found them on the web, they are not yet to be found in the distros. Laird Heal |

It's user interface is very snappy. Can't speak about how well (or how poorly?) the rest of the operating system behaves, since, with me not being a Linux user, I don't really give Linux much of a workout. I only use Linux to build and test Hercules with. Nothing else. KDE Neon 5.25 is okay, but it's user interface is kind of sluggish IMO. Maybe if it was running natively (instead of inside a VMware virtual machine) it might run better? Kubuntu 21.10 seems quite nice IMO. The speed of the user interface, while nowhere near that of CentOS, seems ever so slightly faster than Neon's. Haven't had any problems with any hardware with any of them, but then, as I said I'm running them inside a Windows VMware virtual machine too. It is one single REXX source file that detects its environment and acts accordingly. It is stlil Work In Progress, but test results are very promising. I have tested it successfully on following platforms: ? EBCDIC side ??? VM/370 CE - CMS with bREXX ? ASCII side ??? KEDIT for Windows (Windows 10 GUI) ?? THE (The Hessling Editor) (Windows 10 TUI) ?? REXX-Regina standalone (Windows 10 TUI) ?? REXX-ooRexx standalone (Windows 10 TUI) Since a CMS version has shown to be feasable, it is not necessary any more to have REXX available on the ASCII side. Actually i have run into a bug that a CMS EXEC in REXX cannot have many blank-delimited arguments, i am still researching this before posting an issue on Github. The string "CvG" is arbitrary. bREXX does not even start and you can use a dummy file (only "/* inside) to get this bug. Ready; T=0.01/0.01 18:45:58????????????????????????????????????????????? Work In Progress: support for CMS, first successful tests. Generated tables are almost identical, files differ in minor things. This means it is not necessary any more to have REXX available on the ASCII side.
See Screenhot. How to use it ? ?1) Make sure that Hercules "codepage 819/1047" is in effect ?2) Make sure that "DEFAULT IND$MAP A" is empty (comments only) ?3) Use IND$FILE to transfer "EBCDIC MEMO Y" from CMS to the ASCII side ?4) Transfer back to CMS this very file by reader or tape, set "codepage 819/1047" where needed ?5) Remove unwanted header lines (if any) and save file to "EBCDIC MEMO A1" ?6) Run "INDMAP EXEC", output is written to "EBCDIC IND$MAP A1" This preliminary version does not process command line arguments yet, file names are fixed: ?input 1 = "EBCDIC MEMO Y" ?input 2 = "EBCDIC MEMO A" ?output = "EBCDIC IND$MAP A1" No other code pages than 819/1047 are supported now. |
