I tried to log on to XNET and was not allowed. This is the same for both VM370DEV and VM370P01.

You can't logon to the virtual machine that is hosting the logical devices.? Thus, you cannot logon to XNET from an XNET created logical device session.? This is not an XNET restriction, this is the rules of LDF (the logical device facility).

So, are you saying it is working while disconnected after all?? It sure looks like it from the console messages.

I forced and autologged both VMs. I was able to transfer the console file to MAINT and look at it. This one is from VM370DEV:

With the previously shown PROFILE EXEC, and the VM autologged. I could successfully DIAL XNET and log on to the other host!

I probably have too many SETs such as SMSG in the EXEC, but I will leave it sit for a bit, and also shutdown and IPL to see how that goes.

I figured running disconnected would be fine, once I got done debugging the connections. The following is the VM370DEV PROFILE EXEC A. I thought it might be helpful to know the status after the program started, but I guess it clears the stack, so the XNET commands are not processed. See console screen results below.

No tape backup?
?
In ~ 1984, a friend related that at a previous job he likewise clobbered both sysres and its backup disk. He calmly told the operator to get the last night's backup. The operator told him that backups were taking too long, so the night shift had stopped running them. That is when the sweating started (and a similar rebuild from scratch was done).?
That story in turn reminds me that when I reorganized user packs with FDR, I did it after backups (which wrote two copies to different 9 track tapes) and than had the FDR reorg program write two more tapes. I wasn't gonna lose a pack because of laziness.
?
All this explains why at 2:39 AM every morning, my Hercules host dumps my emulated systems via tar. It does a differential backup nightly and a full 24 GB dump weekly. They go to a 1 TB Micro SD card, which is good for a ~ year of monthly backups. (It prunes the weekly backups after 90 days).? It's not trivial to get a single file off the backup, but I've done it.

Yes, of course.. Dick... senior moment there..?
?
Those heady days of the mid-70's thru the 80's were great times for VM. I was the lead VM systems programmer at Home Savings at the time. We were running an $8B bank on a 3mb 158 under VM with DOS r25 guests along with the normal 50-80 CMS users. We had an online network of around 120-ish teller terminals. (The 158 got upgraded to a 168 and then a 3083 and onward.)
?
The performance challenges of that online terminal network was one of the main motivations for us to engage with Lynn and others to discuss the rumored "Wheeler Scheduler" (which never made it into a shipped version of CP67) and how its concepts might address those challenges. These discussions along with other Share members resulted in the changes to VM that ended up with the features included in SEPP and, later, HPO
?
Great times.. nice to think back on all we accomplished in those days.

Cheers,
William Denton

ps.. for the younger people here, you need to find a copy of the LSRAD report that "saved" VM from the MVS goliath

Pro Tip: Don't add a typewriter console to DMKRIO and then tell Hercules that device address is a card reader.
The combination sent a VM SIXPACK system from 1% host CPU to 100% host CPU, and internally had CP LOAD IND showing 79% CPU utilization without CPWATCH showing any users busy.
I was using the default DMKRIO for the SIXPACK systems and my default (included) configuration for for S/370 hosts. Hence the incompatibility.?

Hi Mark,
?
I found the problem.? It is in your XNET configuration.? I completely missed it before.? Here is the problem, and it is in the CONFIG file for VM370DEV only.? The CONFIG for VM370-01 is correct.? The adjacent node number is incorrect.? Here is what you show you have coded in earlier messages:
?
FSVIEW: XMASVMCE CONFIG C1 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Lines 1-31/31 V80[1-79] ?FSVIEW V1.2.5 * ? ? ? nodename ?netid * ? ? ? -------- ?----- ?LOCAL ?VM370DEV ? ?1 * ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ????????????????via * ? ? ? nodename ?netid ?netid * ? ? ? -------- ?----- ?----- ?NODE ? VM370-01 ? ?2 ? ? ?1
?
The ¡®via¡¯ netid should be a 2 in this case.? To get to node 2, you have to get there via the link-up to node 2.? Hence 2 is the adjacent node.? Your config for the VM370-01 is correct and correctly says adjacent to 1.
?
So I think if you fix adjacent node in the CONFIG file in VM370DEV, then restart XNET on both sides with a fresh IPL 190 first, you will be good to go.
