Hello!
Jim just for everyone's benefit, but also mine, can you restate all of
your steps? I still run the original system when I feel I need to do
something. Presupposing that the tools to do so are available on that
one I would need to know what those were.

Re: Looking for a manual or a little help. . .

I suggest you look on bitsavers.org/pdf/ibm/vm/sp/release_6_Jul88 and get SC19-6201-06 (VM SP 6 planning guide) and SC24-5237-4? ( VM SP 6 installation guide) as you appear to be using VMSPR6.
As I remember it the basic idea of how to rebuild CP and CMS didn't change much as VM moved from VM/370 to VMSP releases 1 to 6, but they introduced newer procedures to automate and obfuscate what was happening.?

A newer version of

DEFSYS and SAVESYS are described.

Hello,?

I'm needing a manual for 5664-167, 'CP System Command Reference SC24-5402', - OR - a solution.

I added two modules to MAINT's 190 disk and now I'm getting the ''shared S-stat message' logging on to CMSUSER.

Re: Anyone have experience in extending VM/CE under Hercules worldwide?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

For auto tape mounts (and other Operator requests), I would look at the 'AutoMount' member of the Waterloo Mods Tapes. This predates even VMCF and I would look to update it to use VMCF. I don't think you need to take it as far as IUCV. If Hercules Automated Operator (HAO) can grab some messages from an authorized SVM (autoop), then requested items can be mounted, autoop notified and item verification can be done before handing the item off to the requestor.

31-bit would pretty much be a total rewrite of VM (VM/XA).

Moshix on Youtube has videos about numerous IT things. He also has systems, I believe some can log into, so he's got experience with this.

You could also explore, besides the other suggestions, use of DIAG8 in Hercules, as it allows some communication with the OS running on it, and the OS it runs on, if I remember correctly.

Hercules Automated Operator (HAO) exists, and can invoke scripts based on Hercules messages it sees.

I'm not near my system, so this is all from memory. Forgive the errors.

Anyone have experience in extending VM/CE under Hercules worldwide?

Hello,

Several college and other friends are looking to bring back the glory (old men) days, when VM/370 R6 PLC 29 brought us together (and later VM/SP).? To this end, I'm looking for those who have experience in bringing people across the world together using VM/CE and Hercules.

The methods I can see are:
  • Extend printers to their computer and local printers.? Thought is the HercPRT program.
  • Connect systems using CTCA (would the HercCTCI program work?).
  • Isn't there a program to connect two systems for login purposes?? Instead of using WC3270 (or similar)?
  • Connect remote printers, punches, card reader, etc., via RSCS.? How would this work today, though?? When I was a SysAdmin, we used real devices, but now?
  • Is there an auto tape mount feature?
  • Method to access an AWS file on another system (e.g. in the UK) as a tape om the local system?
  • Other things that goes into working remotely as a team using VM?
Thank you,

Bertram Moshier
WB8ERT

Kids today have no idea of all you can do with 50+ year old operating systems or software!

Hopefully - some day - we can get TCP/IP with apps (OSI seven layers) on our VM.? Also get it to 31-bit.
