Bare Bones Strategic Planning

开云体育

I have a client with an extremely restrictive policies around use of various software programs.

I am about to engage in a strategic planning process with them, online. The only tools I can use are Zoom, Teams (which I would like to avoid like COVID-19, ThoughtExchange and the Microsoft suite of programs. They do not allow the use of Miro, Mural, anything in the Google world, etc. They have one survey platform that has been approved because it meets their stringent policies; however, it is only marginally useful.

I have a few thoughts on how I can engage this client; however, if anyone out there has experience doing a bare bones (from a technology perspective), yet incredibly rich and engaging strategic planning process, I would really appreciate your thoughts!

Cheers,

David

A tiny thing to think about.? We no longer facilitate strategic planning, a linear process that closes off the possibility of emergent creativity and breakthrough.? Just sayin'

My hope would be that a good process would allow for both of those, Merle. If I told this particular client I no longer facilitated strategic planning, I would likely be eating Kraft Dinner for the next few months.

Hi David.
What a nice project you have!
With Zoom + Microsoft Suite you can do a lot.
When I can’t use Mural with a client, I use Slides (Powerpoint or Google) as a whiteboard. You only need to prepare the ’sticky notes’ in advance with some colourful text boxes. Combining Breakouts with specific slides mimics an easy whiteboard to use.

Added that you have access to ThoughtExchange, you are in pretty good shape to rock it, and have a wonderful meal as celebration after…;)

In terms of methodology, adding on top of what Merle said, there is a beautiful Liberating Structures framework laid out by Keith McCandless and Johannes Schartau on??(aka Knotworking). Dear Nancy White <nancyw@...> is also a reference about it.

My best wishes,

Thanks, Fernando. I can’t use Google products of any sort; however, PowerPoint and using the Whiteboard can be very useful. I will experiment with prepared sticky notes as you suggest. I am hoping to gather as much information asychronously and then design several powerful altogether meetings online.

I’ll check out the Knotworking activity in my Liberating Structures book—haven’t tried that before.

And you certainly live in a beautiful part of the country!

Hi David,

All of the strategic planning resources in our library work with very simple tech,?partly because we design for business leaders rather than professional?facilitators. Most rely on no more than some way to talk (aka Zoom) and some way to collaboratively share notes. You might find some useful ideas you can borrow from these resources.?

Wow, I’m?surprised they even allow Zoom!

I haven’t had the best experiences with Microsoft Whiteboard (syncing issues and inability to handle too many users at once). ?But outside of that, it is a pretty powerful free tool when using windows. For best use, you would have to get your participants to download the app from the Microsoft store from their OS.?My suggestion would be to have a template and make copies for smaller team work. ?It is an infinity board and has some cool frames for team brainstorming.

Also, power point can be?another way to collaborate. ?It would just be a nicer version of Google jamboards, since you can use each slide as a different board.

I love this conversation! I have just started reading Emergent Strategies. Is anyone familiar with that? Seems a way to morph from what is good about thinking strategically into wider themes of non-linear thinking. And I hear you about paying the bills! Hard to be on the cutting edge...aka the consulting edge. Best, Ann

Hi Ann, the book you are reading is one of the best.? Our NGO, the Center for Emergent Diplomacy, applies the theory and principles of Complex Adaptive Systems science to peacebuilding and Track II diplomatic negotiations. As an applied Complexity scientist and recovering international mediator, I can tell you honestly this is the book I wish I had been smart enough to write. ?

In collaboration with our Swedish partners (we're based in Santa Fe, NM), we're holding our first online global conference next weekend. I just hope for the best in terms of the technology working well.? I'll settle for "good enough", because I'm terrified about the tech part.? We're using Zoom.

Cheers,

David

Hi!
Ann, I have been reading “Emergent Strategy” but Adrienne Maree Brown (based on the work of Octavia Butler) - which is really worth checking out, but can’t find “Emergent Strategies” - maybe we are talking about the same book?
Thanks!
Catherine

Best, Ann

I haven’t had the best experiences with Microsoft Whiteboard (syncing issues and inability to handle too many users at once).? But outside of that, it is a pretty powerful free tool when using windows. For best use, you would have to get your participants to download the app from the Microsoft store from their OS.?My suggestion would be to have a template and make copies for smaller team work.? It is an infinity board and has some cool frames for team brainstorming.

Also, power point can be?another way to collaborate.? It would just be a nicer version of Google jamboards, since you can use each slide as a different board.

Hi David

What about?GroupMap? It's similar to Miro/Mular but much more secure.
Honestly, the client will not want to be in the stone age forever, whereas there are good alternatives?out there.

Best wishes

Hi David.? I've used Strategy Knotworking, and it's elegant, simple, and deep, all once.? The Liberators wrote a very helpful article with some examples of a session they did.? Here's a link to that.???
