LS + Miro

Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on successfully using Miro as an accompaniment to any LS activities? The platform seems to have a lot of potential (I'm thinking to use it alongside Zoom), but I'm just trying to get my head round it at the moment.

Thanks,

It works well. The biggest difficulties:?
  • Enormity of the space/canvas can be overwhelming for people and finding your way around that geography can be difficult.?
  • It's interface has lots of little 'pop-ups' that mean to be hints or tips but can be hard to see when they happen and it essentially makes it look like your screen is locked up. Frustrating until you understand that's what's happening
  • Works great for things like What, So What, Now What (different colored and sized sticky notes for each that can be 'stacked' together), Ecocycle Planning, Critical Uncertainties, or any other structure where you want to create little midden piles or deposits of data for future use.?
  • I tend to find those technologies great AND really can limit who can be involved unless they're comfortable with it. Once you have everyone you are working with used to it, the possibilities open up... it's the effort in getting to that place that may not be worth it if the group isn't going to keep coming back to those places.?
  • A group I was supporting just had 300+ simultaneously in Miro using it for harvesting, coordinating Open Space, etc etc etc. It's their organization's default online program though, so everyone not only has a license and access they were already (sort of) familiar with it (following normal distribution trends of familiarity with any technology 8^))

Anyone have a clear sense of the bandwidth issues for Miro and Mural compared to Google docs/slides? When running alongside Zoom?

I have been using Mural with Zoom — I haven’t had any bandwidth issues (And I used with a group I Bolivia with so-so connectivity). However, on another occasion, a week or so ago, ?I found Mural was down as my call was about to start. This has happened a few times in the past as well. ? They are struggling a bit to deal with increased usage, but hopefully will resolve..I would absolutely have a plan B though for the time being.?

Many of the people I work with struggle a bit with any new technology (they don’t like Slack or DB!) and have found that they really loved Mural, as long as I spent time with them individually beforehand to get them comfortable. Some tips were making sure to lock down any information you put on mural that you want them to work with as they can easily move things around by mistake (we were doing sensemaking with evaluation findings), and also ?having certain people that were more comfortable with technology logging in and being the documenters for the others in breakout groups etc. (Logging in can sometimes be a bit tricky for some people). Overall all though I love Mural and use it as well to just do my own visuals for different pieces of work…It’s very easy to use and if you sign up as a “Facilitator” you get some extra perks, including excellent support via chat, etc.?

Hi folks!?
Adding to the excellent comments below about Mural and Miro:

? For sure, people need to get used to the tool. Then, it’s awesome.
? Structuring in a way that people work together in small groups (breakouts in Zoom) allows non-tech people to work with tech-people, and they get along. By the time it happens, they climb quickly the learning curve. As always, use the group to facilitate the group!
? Outlines are great and really help get people moving around and navigating with ease. I suggest to use it as much as you can.
? About bandwidth - one participant in our course talked about having 50 people at the same time in a huge canvas. No problems.
? I used more than once with 16 people with 16 Ecocycles side by side. using pictures, icons and all the stuff happening simultaneously without problem. However, I had a Google slide deck ready as a plan B, and instructions and PDF to print in an e-Mail as plan C..;)
???? I have my free account, and so far this is all I need…:)

Loving so many good exchanges here.

Cheers,

I've used both Mural and Miro for facilitating?workshops. They both work without any bandwidth issues that I tell. Key thing attendees visit my Mural board themselves and not via my zoom window. I try to remember that the world may have a different?sized monitor than me and so my screen share from even half a 27" monitor might be larger than their?laptop screen.

Mural's superpowers for facilitators?(summon) are fun, however attendees find them jaring. Instead I invite them to use the outline and click on the section I want them to view.

Cheers

Hi all. I have not used these types of platforms (Mural or Miro), though I’ve read and heard generally good about them. Another option is Stormboard, a Canadian company based here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where I live. I’ve heard positive feedback on this one, too.

Hey Nancy,

I’ve *just* finished a 5 hour zoom/mural session (with several breaks included, of course!) for 15 international participants ?– you know them! ?

Bandwidth has been fine so far (and the mural was quite graphically rich).? I’m on a slow upload connection (0.8Mb/s), but still no issue.?

?

Last week was more flaky for Mural, but they seem to be over their demand hiccups. Do check that you haven’t got any sync/backup processes sending data up the line competing with Mural.? It seems to ‘chatter’ a lot back and forth, and of there is data competing for uploading space, it can hold things up for a few seconds when you make changes, especially if you’re being followed.

?

Just a great combination to break the monotony of Zoom – and a roadmap-style mural seemed to work well for everyone.

Thanks all - these are all great insights, keep them coming if anyone else has experience, especially w/ Miro as I think that's what one of my?clients is leaning towards :-)

Hello All: I just discovered StormBoard myself and have used it now a couple of times with focus groups. I really like it because you can easily create word, ppt, and other reports very readily!

Hi,

I am not sure this answers your question, and I just joined the group so timing is not ideal but I tought I'd share anyway.

I did run a test when part of the team was off to a second home with minimal (0.13/0.12) bandwith. I throttled the browser connection, and Google doc was like 1/10th of the data transfer. Like a blank word doc vs a blank miro board. I can't find the screenshots I took anymore. You can do it in Chrome, Network, see the data transfered, and also Throttle your speed to check how long it'd take to load with a slower connection

I then throttled the bandwidth given to Zoom. Main insight there is something you might already know but I'd rather call it out :) Both download and upload speed matter. If you have 40Mbit down and 0.5Mbit Up your call is probably gonna be really choppy. People tend to share a single number when they share their internet speed which isn't enough information.

I hope this helps!

Hi! I was wondering about Stormboard and the options of having precreated boards?

As there is an abduance of creativity shared through Is there something like that for the Stormboard?

Carol Hamilton

This is a great resource - thanks for sharing! Stormboard has a lot of built in templates but I am not aware of a resource like this for Stormboard boards.

No more boring online meetings!

Eventually I bought the Collaboard with the App Sumo lifelong access deal.

Anyone having experience with this one?
