I’m passing this along because it’s a rare chance to learn from Sandra Janoff, co-creator of Future Search*. For those of you who don’t know Sandra, she is one of the few leaders still actively working who launched the great era of experimentation with whole systems change work that transforms how groups come together and move forward. Sandra has been one of my most important teachers. One of numerous ways she has influenced my work is in how I think about and draw in the people who make up a system.

Sandra co-directs the Future Search Network with Michael Donnelly, who lives in Northern Ireland and was introduced to this work 25 years ago when it became instrumental in rebuilding civil society at the time of the Good Friday Peace Agreement.

Together, they have created a high quality learning experience which they are offering in-person in

Philadelphia on May 20-22.

About the workshop:
The P-10 Facilitation Training is for facilitators, leaders, and anyone who wants to run better meetings in today’s complex world. It’s about leading more, controlling less, and keeping groups whole—even when tensions run high.

Last week, we ran the first cohort of ‘Strategies to Counter Authoritarianism�� as part of The Facilitating Collective Power. It was invaluable to spend time with other experienced facilitators analysing how authoritarians use different power domains to assert control and then determine strategies that will enable the social change efforts we support to counter and build their power. We also focused on identifying, supporting, and practising a form of anti-authoritarian leadership known as ‘Facilitative Leadership�� and then examined our facilitation practices to ensure we always ‘walk the walk��.

Hello Facilitation Community,

Thought I would share this here as this list was formed to speak to an emerging crisis and many of our communities are facing even more crisis on a number of fronts. Please feel free to share this with your networks or anyone else who might benefit from participating.

Across the world, authoritarianism is on the rise—eroding democratic spaces, silencing dissent, and undermining collective action. Now, more than ever, we must build strong, participatory movements that can resist repression and create just alternatives.

The Facilitating Collective Power Lab is a hands-on training designed to equip facilitators, organisers and activists with the skills to cultivate inclusive, participatory spaces where people can strategise, collaborate, and take action together. Hosted by FabRiders, this course will help you:

🔹 Develop facilitation techniques to copower with groups to work collectively

🔹 Strengthen networks of resistance and solidarity

🔹 Build spaces where all voices can be heard—and resist repression

We are offering this Lab twice to accommodate a diversity of time zones

March 12th & 13th - 4 pm to 7 pm UTC (check your time zone)
March 19th & 20th - 10 am to 1 pm UTC (check your time zone)

Scholarships are available for anyone facing hardship due to the US Foreign Aid Freeze and Stop Work Order or if the registration fee poses a barrier to participation.

What is the workshop about?

The 2-day graphic facilitation workshop in Winnipeg is where people learn about visual vocabulary, templates and visual harvests, creative facilitation processes and have time and safe space to practice and gain confidence! Anyone working in planning, engagement, facilitation or simply never wants to attend another boring meeting should consider this workshop. The location is central and easy to get to for locals and travelers in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Central Canada). This workshop is co-hosted with Laurie Ringaert of Change Weavers Consulting and joining me to deliver this very practical (and fun) workshop is graphic recorder and illustrator Lisa Gates.

There is an early bird registration until Feb 16th. If price is the only barrier, contact me so we can find a solution.

Thanks to those who participated in the survey I posted here and in a few other places: What facilitation training is needed to help people succeed in the post-pandemic context?

I summarized the answers and posted a quick presentation with the highlights here.

To note, the top ranked thought was being able to switch from in-person, to hybrid, to online on a dime. That is a lot to ask for no?

Thankfully good listening skills also ranked high assuring me that the basics of "process" still hold true despite technology enhancing and complicating things!

This email list was in response to the pandemic as we all shifted to go online during that time. It's been a great community to share ideas and practice with.

With the pandemic waning and the opportunity for in person meetings back (yet still a desire to be online or hybrid), I am interested to hear from you what you have found is the greatest challenge for "meeting" that we could be focusing on as facilitators. I've started an online exchange to collect and share and vote on ideas. I'll create a report at the end to share with you. Please consider sharing a few thoughts!

non-profit strategic plans business oriented examples

Hi facilitators,

I am going to support a med-sized non-profit economic development org with a 3 year strategic plan. They have about 12 full time staff, 10 board members and their budget is shrinking due to some key programs they used to administer not taking place anymore. They currently have an annual plan (which they updated annually for the past 10 years) which they really like, however it is more of an 'activity plan' for the year (from my perspective).

I'm looking for examples of plans from other economic development / not-for-profit that are public or shareable. Or if you have great strategic plan examples to share, that would be excellent as well.

I don't have a lot of plans I can share publicly that fit this profile. If you are looking for a more indepth plan, I did this one recently for a multistakeholder partnership (more complex) that took almost a year and is public.

Do you use Double Loop Learning/ higher-level learning/Emergent Learning as a framework for your non-profit facilitation work?

Hello Fellow Facilitators,

I am looking to connect with facilitators who use any of the following higher-order organizational learning (OL) concepts to inform all or part of their non-profit client work: double loop learning (Argyris & Schon), higher-level learning (Fiol & Lyles), Learning II (Bateson), Emergent Learning (Senge). These concepts would be used in OL, organizational development, change management, leadership development, and transformational learning among other processes. I am not so much seeking training contexts where these are a part of a curriculum, but applications by facilitators that help non-profits with their work.

I am aiming to undertake a piece of academic research as a part of my PhD work on organizational learning in NGOs to understand how facilitators use these OL concepts and the results they produce. If you use any of these (e.g. they inform your work, and/or you introduce them to your clients) please send me an email and I can tell you more about the research (which will go forward only if I can find enough facilitators who are using these concepts!) Eventual participation would be through an interview with you and potentially a counterpart in your client organization. The output will be a peer-reviewed journal article which would anonymize all participants (if you want your name attached I can include it in the acknowledgements).

I'm wondering if this might be useful to folks on this list.

Mike Rozinsky and I have a project When & How Studios which supports people in creating rich, participatory experiences for their organisations or communities. This week we’re launching a series of three public online workshops to folks who are working on designing and facilitating gatherings this spring, or wanting to bring participation into a talk or keynote.

It provides somewhere to do the actual design work for a real group experience that you're working towards, a peer-support group to enrich your learning and development, and a set of design conversations that you can take with you into the future. We call them the 16 Design Aspects.

This is a series of three 90 minute online sessions, running weekly on Tue 25th April, Tue 2nd May and Tue 9th May. See the event page or site for full details, including a 2 min video which explains more.

I'm writing in hopes that you can help me spread the word about two workshops I am offering this June and July after a three-year pandemic hiatus! They are related to meeting facilitation, engagement and the use of visuals.

I'm excited to announce my annual graphic facilitation workshop - is scheduled for July 13 &14 in Rossland, BC, Canada at the beautiful "slopeside" Josie Hotel. Come join me and make it a retreat!

For those that only have one-day or may not be able to travel, I am also offering a NEW HYBRID workshop June 2nd (Engaging Beyond Words) where people can join in-person (in Rossland, BC) or online. To all F4C colleagues,

I apologize for sending two messages with different free offers this month. One person told me that the offer with the $1000 credit for each new event organizer felt too commercial for this list, and I 100% understand. There were probably several others who felt that way too, so I will ease up.

To provide some context, I feel urgency when I read the news, and as a facilitator I know how each person on this list has the power to bring people together. I'm a combat veteran and I have seen what happens on the opposite side of that spectrum.

I understand why many people feel burned out from the past few years. I'm hoping everyone who feels exhausted can remember some of the best events they've ever held in-person or online and then can regain their momentum.

My company has hundreds of Zoom licenses that go unused every day. We're here to support anyone that is brave enough to bring people together in an online or hybrid environment. There is so much potential for what facilitators can do online now at every scale from local to international. If you don't know where to start, please drop into open office hours and we can brainstorm together.
