Yes I am in full agreement. The misunderstanding is not in the
freedom of being able to ask questions it is in the answers
received. I can ask questions about my cat on the dog list and I
will get answers but I might get better answers on the cat list.
I appoligize if I was misunderstood as promoting censorship.

Of course, we could go further on and say that any questions
regarding a
diode should be directed to the a diode list, either on Yahoo!
Groups or
Usenet or something. And transistors to a transistor list, and so
on. Which
at the end leaves this group with nothing.
Bottom line is I think that ANY general electronic question can be
asked
here. Anything from resistors to shoot making a PCB board.
Everything is 101
stuff. Now, if you want to know how to make a super efficient
multitasking
PIC OS, then yeah, pic list would give you a good answer. But I bet
that
most guys from pic list are in this group too. And wouldn't such
advance
question be intriguing for beginners? I know I sure got pretty
tired of just
learning about the real basic stuff when I started. It was fun
seeing and
touching into the advance things too. That way I could easily apply
the
beginners stuff with advance stuff!

Yes this is all well and good but if someone wants questions
answered
about the PIC microcontrollers they will get better answers from a
PIC discussion group. I have been in several PIC discussion groups
over the years and found them very helpful.
Asking PIC questions on this list is a little like asking VHDL
questions on this list. It's related to electronics but I will
probably get better answers on a discussion list devoted to the
topic
since there is one.
I don't think there is a capacitors discussion list and capacitors
are part of beginning electronics (electronics 101). Capacitors
are
also discussed in physics so capacitors could be discussed on
either
list. If there were a capacitors discussion list then better
answers
to capacitor questions would be found there.
It is less about what should be discussed on this list and more
about
where the best answers can be found.

To a certain degree, I think electronics can be discussed in a
physics
group. However, the tie between microcontrollers and discrete
components are
much stronger than physics and electronics.
Another point, a microcontroller is designed specifically to
interface with
general electronics. I would say the discussion of Pentium
processor are
much far off the topic cause these are not considered or meant to
be used in
embedded systems. A microcontrollers firmware can not be altered
so
much
that you can run Windows on it, unless you of course alter the
whole
circuit.
So simply, yes, I still think microcontroller discussion belong
to
this
group. Of course, if its more into specific software coding
techniques of
PICs (or whatever) then a pic list would be better. But general
programming
questions, microcontroller interface etc, belongs to this group
as
much as
capacitors and charge :)
