New H/L mini lathe gears.
Recently? cut new aluminium H/L headstock gears, I replaced the nylon gears to steel some years ago,?
after breaking several sets, the?steel worked OK but were very noisy.
The new "ally" gears cut are a smidge larger in tooth contact to take up the back lash between teeth.
Hope to strip the lathe down and fit gears when it gets warmer, to cold here to tinker at this moment. See photo, hope?of interest.

Hi, John,
I am very much looking forward to hearing if they are actually quieter, once installed. Very nice machining job, as usual! -- Regards, Charlie New Jersey, USA LAW OF ANNOYANCE: When working on a project, if you put away a tool that you’re certain you’re finished with, you will need it instantly. |

开云体育Very nice John, great machining as always. ?Like Charles will be interested to see if quieter and by how much. Barry Australia? On 6 Apr 2020, at 05:55, CLevinski <clevinski@...> wrote:

Jon Rus and? members .
DB meter a good idea. before and after. I have an app on my phone. I will let you know, but it wont be for a few weeks.? As my RB mini lathe is now without any change gears, due to the RELS fitted, it now drives the spindle direct off the gear reduction motor assembly,?the noise from the H/L steel gears is really irritating, in fact scary LOL. I hope to include within a few weeks posts referring to the RB gear reduction unit, doubles the maximum torque but reduces top? RPM to approx 1300 RPM. I could never understand why mini lathes can run up to 2500 RPM. Again scary with a 100 mm dia chuck fitted. But the bottom end torque is amazing with the Gear reduction. Also step by step information fitting the new ally gears.? All stay safe, stay at home and we will all get past this bumpy road in life. -- John |

开云体育Agree John, the extra torque with the gear reduction unit is great and works very well, best money I ever spent, you come up with a brilliant device everyone should have one. Barry Australia? On 6 Apr 2020, at 15:04, John Lindo <bechetboat@...> wrote:
