Re: Can this DRO be used?

Probably works with common chinese scales, pinout unknown from ad, manual unknown...

There are many "rebranded" versions of these items... are they factory overruns? rejects?

Price for the DRO alone seems high to me, compared to ebay and amazon...

This is very sad news. Barry and I emailed often and video chatted from time to time. He was a great guy and I will miss him.

The ones I got (JIRKA's TMLS-01C-02, TMLS-01D-02) list these specs:
Resolution: 1 ?m
Accuracy (with the tape): up to +/-10 ?m

The specs are the same for their regular 1 ?m resolution scales. I think the inner electronics are the same for all the models, it's just about how the encoders and the magnetic tape are "packaged".

Enjoy family time.

I also found out that Yuri lives about 30 minutes from me.? I got a hold of him on Facebook and he was out shopping with his wife and pretty close to my house.
Interesting, you must be pretty near me as well. I just got my order from Yuri and the address is only 2 miles from eldest son's house. For me, it is about 30-45 minutes there depending on traffic and which way you go.

Hi Gene,

Thanks for the informative message.

Do you know the accuracy of these super small scales?? Little Machine shop sells small headed DRO's but I don't know how accurate they are; and this is most important on the cross slide.

I really don't think my Logan 400 is set up to have a DRO on, what we call in the USA, the cross or compound slide.? ? It's a trade off for shoe-horning something in vs. it's usability and it's effects on the overall usability of the lathe.? I'll have to look for the Caliper2PC sometime later this week.

I guess that the reason for the glass scale is both cost and potentially noise immunity vs. the higher end capacitive scales and mostly just cost vs. the magnetic scales.? ?I really don't know the accuracy/repeatability of these super small scales, but I image that the glass scales are just as good or potentially better.

Peter,

As soon as I get this done, I'll post some pictures.? ?I am hoping to get this done before 1 January.? ?Things move slowly around here - work/kids/home duties/holiday obligations, etc. take priority.

Dave

This is exactly the same problem I have on my Myford.? I'd be interested in any solution for the cross slide.? I believe Machine-DRO offer a design specifically for the Myford where the magnetic strip is glued into a machined groove on the underside of the cross slide but it's ferociously expensive.

I installed the Arduino version of touch DRO on my mill several years ago, and can't praise it enough, so really want to find a cost effective and elegant solution to this cross slide issue.

Hello Peter,
You have me confused with David, the original poster.
But I also posted just ago regarding which encoders I got for my Hobbymat MD65.

Hi David,

Thanks for the explanation. My question was more like "why use a glass scale for the Z axis?". Saving money is a legitimate reason :)

If you think your Logan 400 cross slide is super small, then have a look at Hobbymat MD65 (that's what I have).
I plan to install a DRO on my Hobbymat, I already have the scales, just didn't get to it yet.

I got those super small magnetic scales you mentioned for the cross slide and top slide (I think I can manage to fit one to the top slide as well, but who knows) - these are separate reading heads, just 10 mm wide,
to be used with magnetic tape that I will have to install in some compact but safe-ish way. I paid about 150 EUR for each read head.
For the Z axis, I got a regular magnetic scale, that visually looks very similar to a typical glass scale. It was about 220 EUR.

In case this might be useful to someone:
I'm in Luxembourg, I got the stuff from a Czech company Jirka & Spol. They are also known as Tigre DRO.
Their English-language website just lists the products, their Czech website has an online shop where the prices can be found.
By the way, in the UK, Machine-DRO are selling quite similar looking products with similar dimensions and specs.

Have you considered adding a DRO to the top slide as well (Z' axis)? Some DRO displays can combine multiple axes (assuming top slide is set parallel to the Z axis, the DRO will show you Z+Z').
For my DRO, I have an old Thinkpad X220t (tablet) and a device called Caliper2PC that can interface with quadrature encoders (e.g. glass or magnetic scales) or even cheap digital calipers (the name originally comes from those).
The Caliper2PC software is quite cool and has a lot of features, including a Top Slide DRO, allowing to set the Top Slide up at an angle, then combine the readings from cross slide and top slide encoders to correctly track both the Z/X positions.

It would be nice if you post pictures of your X axis installation, once you do it. I'm still wondering about the best way to install them on my lathe, while retaining access to the gib strip adjustment screws.

Best regards,
Gene

Hello, Gene. Would you mind sharing which X axis scale you wind up getting? Thanks.

Hi Gene,

I have a Logan 400 lathe and the cross slide isn¡¯t set up well for a DRO- it¡¯s super small. ? There are super small magnetic DRO¡¯s being sold now that can fit better in a conventional manner but are a little more expensive. ? Glass scales can easily mount to the Z axis and are well proven technology. ? Glass sales are also less affected by temperature differences than are magnetic scales which is probably more important on the longer Z ax. ?Yuri¡¯s board with the DB9 connectors will work with either the super small magnetic scales or glass scales. ? Apparently, the refresh rate is faster with magnetic and glass scales, but this probably isn¡¯t a discernible change. ? Glass and magnetic scales are also more tolerant to radiated and conducted EMI, so there may be less flickering of the readout. ? Typically, the scales are more accurate as well (when compared to capacitive scales).

For me, the key selling point is that the magnetic ?scales are much smaller and fit my X axis better. ? I am offsetting the higher costs of the magnetic scales with a glass scale on my Z axis(which is probably a better option for the Z axis anyway).

Hi John,

I bought my tablet from Best Buy.? They have a Digiland DL1036 for $60, new.? ?I did order the iGaging Absolute scales from Grizzley, but Yuri talked me into getting a glass scale for my Z axis and a magnetic scale for my X axis.? I will have to return the scales to Grizzly and eat the costs.?

From what I know, Little Machine Shop basically pirated Yuri's design and is now using his software - free of charge.? ?I don't like that for Yuri spent the time to develop everything - it's like stealing.? ?At least - that is what I know but I could be wrong.

Dave?

Can you please explain the reasoning behind different types of scales for different axes?

Thanks
