Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
After reading a comment on Facebook, I'm wondering how likely it is that there could exist smaller fragments of this comet, that would have been unobservable in the 18th century or before, but that

Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Qicheng, This is the 2097 orbit, "linked" to 1402 with a fixed perihelion date for 1402 which gave the best agreement with the other apparitions. Orbital elements: C/1743 X1 Perihelion 2097 Dec

Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Finbarr, hmm, you are right. The dates were later added by the editors, prior the final proof. I did not check these. Maik -- "One cannot discover comets lying in bed." * Lewis Swift

Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Very interesting! Do you know what the uncertainty on its angular elements looks like? For multi-apparition objects observed only near perihelion, the positional uncertainty is generally dominated by

Very interesting indeed. One quick note re William Edward Plummer; his dates are 1849-1928. Finbarr.

Sam, all, many thanks to all for the congrats. It was quite an experience and fun to do this paper. Maybe I am mistaken but from table 3 you see that the predicted perihelion date in 2097 varies by

Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Hi Maik, A very excellent paper from you both! In terms of validation prospects, we certainly don't have to wait until 2097 at least to confirm its existence. No comment is given in the paper on its

Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Great work, congratulations! Assuming a realistic extrapolation, I'm wondering how long before perihelion we should be able to recover such a bright comet with modern instruments. Adrien

Wow, that¡¯s a very interesting paper. If that prediction is correct, I¡¯m probably going to see it, and what a Great Comet. We¡¯re also certainly going to see others bright comet in the years to

Re: Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Hi Maik and Gary, Congratulations with the publication of this monumental work about the history of C/1743 X1. It was a real pleasure to read! To bad it will not return before 2097. A return 70 years

Hi Maik, I don't know whether it is the comet of the century or pipe dream, in any case a great work of historical research! Congratulations to both of you. Piero Sicoli

Comet of the century or pipe dream?
Hello all, I am happy and proud, after many years of on-and-off work on this topic, to present my newest paper, with Gary W. Kronk as my co-author. "THE GREAT COMET C/1743 X1: POSSIBLE IDENTIFICATION

Re: (308607) 2005 WY3
Actually, I think it¡¯s a 2:3 resonance with Jupiter (i.e., two orbits for every three Jupiter orbits). Dear Adrien, all, I didn¡¯t examine this quite as thoroughly, but I also noted the 3:2

Re: (308607) 2005 WY3
I'm noting that this object seems to be in 3:2 (outer) resonance with Jupiter for thousands of years at least. I haven't seen this point noted here before, so it's certainly something worth

Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) of 2025.04.26
Hello everyone, on the evening of April 26th an attempt was made to capture what remains of the comet. The shooting conditions were extreme: object very low on the horizon (h = < 4¡ã) passing clouds,

Re: Is comet c/2025 f2 SWAN disintegrating?
Hi All. According to the last SWAN images to April 24 the comet 25F2 (or its remnants) is still visible on the level of +11...12m based on UV visibility. Animation is attached here. Vladimir.
