3110 94' Super Tank cars
pars3399
I started accumulating A1G cars last week. So far I have purchased the
4-3010 series Vinegar Cars, the 3-2340 series Jumbo Tank Cars, and the 4-3030 series Helium Tank Cars. My next search is for the 4-3110 series 94' Super Tank Cars. So far I have located the 3113 Wanda Petroleum Car I saw a listing on ebay for all four @ $250.00. Since I am knew at this I was wondering how does this price line up. The Wanda cost me $35.00 so it appeared the $250.00 for the four was possibly a little high. Anyone out there have advice on pricing or availability. Thanks Robert |

Hi Robert, and welcome to the group.
The 94 foot tank cars have actually gone past the $100 mark on an individual basis at times on eBay. (While not perfect, it's the best indicator we have on pricing.) However, it's been a while since I've personally seen those kind of prices. My casual watching-- which I hasten to add does not take in every sale on eBay-- tells me that the price estimates I posted a while back on the A1G site are more the case now, and that's in the 25 to 60 dollar range each. This fits with my observation that there has been a general downturn in the aftermarket for N Scale items. Some folks may put a premium on their own time and would find the pricing for all four cars at once to be worth the extra money being asked. Availability is always an open question for which there is no really definitive answer. As with nearly every N Scale item made, there is no public disclosure of the quantity manufactured, and of course it's anybody's guess from there how many are left in mint condition. I can tell you that I see at least one example, in shape ranging from really nice to really poor, at about every fourth or fifth train meet that has a reasonable amount of N Scale. Prices are all over the place there as well, from ten or fifteen dollars to that hundred bucks I mentioned before. This is just one data point though, and since I only get to a couple of train shows a year these days it's hardly a statistically valid sample. What is different about the 94 foot tank cars, though, is that decades after their first and only release, there remains no alternative if you really want to have these cars. (Well, scratchbuilding, I suppose!) This is compounded by the interest in these cars by collectors of petroliana; there are a few people out there who want anything with a Texaco trademark on it, for example, and Catalog Number 3112 fits the bill! I think this means that as other A1G items (and other A1G items in general) continue to soften, you'll still see some relatively high prices for the super tank cars-- unless and until there is a re-release. I guess it all depends on what you think it's worth; to me about 225 more than I'd pay...
