New to group and acquiring Atlas cars/locos

Hello everyone,

I just signed up for this group to learn more about A1G. I'm a
collector of several things and figured why not N-scale trains too as
long as I also like to run them.

Is there a FAQ about A1G? If not, could someone tell me what the
difference is between first gen and second gen; also how many
generations are there? Is there a value guide somewhere? I have
picked up some items off eBay and the inserts say made in Yugoslavia or
Austria. I have no idea if I'm over paying, but as long as I like it,
guess it doesn't matter; until I find the same thing at a much lower
price.

Thanks.
Doug

Maybe its time to expand the site to include Atlas 2nd generation?

I think that interest in the Atlas First Generation has been slowly but steadily increasing. Speaking of which, each time the A1G 94 foot tank cars go for a good price-- which is just about every time they are listed!-- there is some comment or other about that. This is not only a place to discuss the greater and lesser points of a series of rolling stock that has more or less been around for more than 35 years now, which is ancient history for N Scale; but a place to buy, sell and trade A1G equipment. Fun with Bulkhead Flats...

umtrr

A couple of us have been having some off-line "conversations" about
some recent eBay listings of Atlas Bulkhead Flat cars.

First, a few have come up recently that aren't A1G cars, but are
later Atlas releases that are pretty close to the "original."
Algoma Central, Boston and Maine and Illinois Central are among the
roadnames of these cars. The A1G releases are limited to Southern
Pacific (with, inexplicably, N&W reporting marks!) and a different
Illinois Central. The A1Gs have a pretty crude paint job so it
should be fairly easy to tell them apart.

Second, some A1G bulkhead flats have come up with a lumber load that
is of a different height than the ones I have pictured on the A1G
website. I was initially not sure that this is really a "variation"
since, in fact, the lumber loads are constructed of several pieces
which snap together. It's possible that someone simply removed one
of the pieces from the center, yielding a lower height load.

But lo and behold, I just checked my own A1G accumulation and it
turns out that I do have a copy of the Illinois Central car with a
lower load, just six "boards" high (three pieces) versus the
eight "boards" (four pieces) that I've come to call "standard".

Of course, the whole idea that a lumber load of any size could
travel on a flatcar without some restraining devices is rather
amusing now-- it was good enough to just have something back in the
1960s-- so the point is kind of moot from a realism standpoint.

Those of you who've read this far and are interested enough to take
a look at your own bulkhead flat cars, please let us know how "tall"
those lumber loads are.

Cheers,
George (your list owner and A1G webmaster)

ADMIN Re: HYPERLINK

George Irwin

I think something did not get through here. Yahoo can be a little flaky about what it accepts, so you might want to try a resend. I have the group set to automatically remove attachments.

Specific references to individual auctions are permitted but it might be easier to provide an item number or the name of the seller. I've noticed that in the last couple of weeks eBay has assigned ridiculously long URLs to even individual items so that may be causing some issues as well.

Cheers,
George (your list-owner)

Re: item numbers

Jim,

I know you made your inquiries last Febuary, but I have recently
joined the group and saw your letter of inquiry about that Fairbanks-
Morse Switcher.
I have one that I bought in the early 80s (actually My wife
bought it for a Christmas present). This one is actually in a green
and yellow MiniTrix Box. It was decorated for the Pennsylvania RR
and the end of the box has "32003" stamped on it. Since this was
actually marketed by Trix that may explain the different number. But
I am sure the locomotive is the same as yours as it also has "Trix"
and "West Germany" printed on the bottom. And yes this is the
original box.
Just FYI.

Richard

Thank you for your kind words on an old problem, I seem to
be having
the
most trouble with just a few locomotives. I was a Toy Shop
owner for a
few
years and still have most of my Distributor's Catalogs, but
none of them
make much mention of Minitrix, which I believe was imported by
Model
Power
and Con-Cor among others. Thanks in large part to Doug's site
( I hope I
have the right name) on the "Spook Show" I have been able to
narrow them
down to the following.
---> Doug has a very good site. While many Minitrix cars were
marketed
in the USA by Model Power, Con-Cor imported a lot of the Minitrix
engines. The Con-Cor/Minitrix engines would show up in a green
and
yellow Minitrix cardboard cover box over a styrofoam box, but
would have
the white/orange Con-Cor label on the end of the box.

Item one is a Mintrix, Fairbanks-Morse H-12-44 Switcher,
("Trix" and
"Western Germany" are molded to the undercarrage) it started
it's life as
a
Santa Fe, but has since been custom painted to become a
Southern Pacific.
I
would be interested in learning the the Minitrix number for the
Santa Fe
version, but would be happy with the number that Model Power
sold it
under
also. The ends of the Minitrix box have no printed numbers on
them, but
there is a sticker on the top cover saying "Model Power pre-
tested
locomotive" and another sticker on the bottom of the box on
which is
handwritten "2005 Trix-Penn".
My notes/database say that Model Power 2011 was a Santa Fe H-12-
44
diesel. I cannot verify any beyond that, nor when it was
released.
I happen to collect Santa Fe, so I had made a note on this one.

Item two is an EMD GP 30, it also has a custom paint job,
making it a
Cotton Belt Engine, and came to me in a clear, unlabeled, foam
lined,
plastic box. On the bottom of the locomotive the words "Lima"
and
"Italy"
are molded into the fuel tank.
There are a couple of possible answers on this one:

PMI imported a GP30 from Lima in the 1974 to 1975 time frame
(probably
longer). Product number for PMI was 7601 for the Santa Fe
version with
road number 1211.

Lima released a Santa Fe GP30 under the product number of 263 in
the
1969 to 1970 time frame with road number 5426.

Also AHM did a Santa Fe GP30 under the product number of 4251 in
the
mide 1970s. This may also have been a Lima manufactured item?

Atlas had a GP30 made by Roco (product # 4061 for Santa Fe) made
prior
to 1985.

Arnold had a 1987 or earlier version of the GP30 with product
number of
5054 for the Santa Fe.

I know you asked specifically about the Lima, but sometimes the
engine
you get can be somebody's custom hybrid with a shell from one
source and
a motor/drive from a different source. Sometimes you have to
have all
the engines sitting side by side to tell which is which.

Item three is what I believe to be a Plymouth Industrial
Switcher, but it
has only four wheels and most I have seen had six wheels. On
it's
undercarrage are also molded the words "Lima" and "Italy", it
too has a
custom paint job and came in a non-descript plastic box. It
has one
large
window opening, with no bracing in it, and one door glass
opening on each
side of the cab, most I remember seeing had a brace or
partition in the
larger opening.
This may be a PMI item, as they imported a switcher from Lima.
But I do
not have any photos, so I cannot help there. PMI's product
number was
8641 for the Santa Fe entry.

Any help you, or this group, could provide leading me a bit
farther
along
in my quest would be most definitely appreciated.

Thank you
Jimi
I hope that helps you out. Given that the engines have been
custom
painted, they could be any of a range of product numbers, as most
manufacturers had different product numbers for each road name.

In my database, I track what I own and what is of interest.
Tracking
both helps in correctly identifing what I have. Since 3 years
ago when
I aquired a digital camera, I have been slowly adding photos of
the
engines to the database as well. I also flag each item, as to
whether
I can verify the product number. So when I own the car in the
box and
I can see the same item with the same product number in a
catalog, I
figure its verifable. Or when I can get similar confirmed
information
from others it becomes verifable.

Thanks for the information RICK, I sort of figured that it was a lost cause, because I couldn't find any information on motors for them. I wonder if any one has come up with a motor swap?
Thanks again Ken

Hi rdoflyr,
Funny you should mention Lima. My friend Vince has a Lima UP FP45 which we got up and running last Saturday. The motor on it reminded me of the vaccum cleaner motors with the large spring wire retainers to hold the brushes in place. We got it to run half way decent but it still sounded like a coffee grinder.I don't know of any place that would have any Lima motors instock. Your best bet would be to go to some model railroad swapmeets to look for parts or go to Railwire and/or Atlas forum sites and ask if anyone might have a spare engine/ motor or spare parts manufacturered by Lima. Maybe even someone on here at the A1g user group may also be able to help you in your quest. Hope you have some luck getting what you need,
Rick

Due to money being tight and I am narrowing my focus in N Scale, I
have decided to sell the majority of my A1G cars.

If you are interested in any of these, email me offlist. I will only
be selling the cars that are in their original boxes.

Sorry, this does NOT include the rare 94' tank cars or the 86' stock
and boxcars. I paid so much for these that I decided to keep them.

Email me for a list of what is available.

After being out of the loop for a bit, I am back online again. I have
moved back to Illinois, and I brought my A1G accumulation with me.

Now once I find employment, maybe I can finish out my accumulation. I
now have access to a good digital camera, so will get caught up on
those pictures of variations I promised George and Doug.

Will also weed out my duplicate cars and post them for sale here as
time permits.

I hope to participate more now that I am settling in.

Re: A1G Passenger Car Screw Connection.......

Hi Doug,
That's kind of the impression I got with the mount on these cars. Not maded to be removed. They must had maded a production change on these cars early on. Someone probably applied the wrong color trucks to some of the cars and they needed a way to be able to change if needed. I'm glad they went with the screw to post technic as it makes them easier to work with. Heck, even my newer Rivarrossi C&NW heavyweights are done with the screw technic.
Thanks for replying,

The early releases were made this way. Several of mine have the flat headed

don't seem to want to unscrew. I have a feeling that they may be press fitted

never heard of anything like this and thought it might ba a after market
modification done to these cars. He suggested that I send out this e-mail to

see if anyone else has encountered this style of mount and how you got the
pin removed from the internal post inside the car bodies?
Any thoughts or ideas?
Rick
The early releases were made this way. Several of mine have the flat headed
black pins. I always wanted to keep mine original so I never attempted to
remove them. They are really tight on the one I have in front of me right now and
don't seem to want to unscrew. I have a feeling that they may be press fitted
into the post above.
