Re: Thick/Thin PRR variation found on the single door box
Ian,
I do in fact have the thick and thin lettering versions of the 2286 PRR 40 Double Door Boxcar on the A1G site... right on the 2280 page. I get to variations as I add them to the accumulation or as people submit photos to me.? Don Dautel sent over the photo of the thick/thin PRR boxcar <and> granted permission to post it on the A1G site. Keep in mind that this is not my day job... George (slightly grumpy list-owner) |

Oh, I forgot to mention there is a section in photos called emailed photos and yours are in there. It's good to have them all in a column to easily see the differences.

Re: Thick/Thin PRR variation found on the single door box
Hi Ian,
There are some photos of those variations in the photos section of the group. There as a section within the photos called "Miscellaneous" and they are there.
Paul Dickdash leaving is a little puzzling because he always seemed to like the discussions. That's why I hope it's not a health issue.

Also to note (not found on George's site), I have come across a thick/thin variation on the single door 40' boxcar as well as the 40' double door box.. One could conclude that variations exist on the 50' double door as well. See photo attached. I assume the 2 that left didnt care to sit through an actual discussion about early Atlas stuff..? List has been quiet for a while until the tank discussion came up.. (I forgot I was subscribed until I saw a post, ohh yeah, that Vinegar car...) ~Ian

Re: Mystery Heinz 57 Vinegar Car?
Two data points...
First, the Micro-Trains release doesn't use the Roco tooling.? It's their standard 45000/045 body style with a resin tank literally taped to the car.? I have the N Scale Collector/N Scale Enthusiast 2016 Author Car and I just looked at it.? (And let the factory air out... well, actually I'd done that already.) Second, despite having mentioned it on the A1G page for the vinegar tank cars, I completely forgot about the short-lived re-release of the car that Atlas did.? I only have "in the 1980s" as the timeframe which means someone (i.e., me, your list owner) is going to have to look through a lot of magazines to see if Atlas advertised this rerun.? There are no records of it on TroveStar and I don't own any of these re-releases.? That's unlike the E-R Models cars, where I do have all four. Oh, one other unintended consequence of this discussion?? Two members left the group!? Was it something we said...? Cheers, George (your list-owner) |

I have attached?4 photos: Micro Trains for the NSE, road #227, it looks like they use the Atlas/Roco tank and their flat car, all most the same blue as Atlas. Roco/E-R road #200 dark blue almost looks like black on the flat car. Atlas road #204, box car red/mineral brown. And Atlas road #208 blue flat car, a lighter blue than the Roco E-R blue. At the swap meets I have seen this car with a slight varying of the blue.? ![]()

I ran an Ebay search for "vinegar" and learned 2 things: 1: Ebay seems to be blocking visibility of completed listings on the website. 2: Atlas made a second run of Vinegar cars in the 1990s? (based on the jewel case cradle color and label) -- The car I have is from this '2nd run' In this case, each car had 2 numbers, the cars come in the medium size jewel case commonly used from Mid 1980s-today for larger Covered Hoppers and the TOFC cars,? Also the cars have a white cradle. I found: Heinz ATL 3051 #203 and ATL 3052 #204 and Milwaukee ATL 3053 #10 and ATL 3054 #16 ~Ian On Sun, Mar 24, 2019 at 8:28 PM learmoia via Groups.Io <learmoia=[email protected]> wrote:

The E&C car pictured looks more black than brown (to me).. for sure more brown than the car I have, and the lettering is different on the flat and tank. ~Ian On Sun, Mar 24, 2019, 20:13 eastwest40 <Chipeta70@...> wrote:

Re: Mystery Heinz 57 Vinegar Car?
Chuck and all,
My copy of the E-R/Roco version of this car has the "Atlas" ground out and the "Austria" remaining.? I just checked. From the images on the A1G site, you can see that I don't have the #200 with a brown flat car.?? So this is a mystery, to me anyway... Cheers, George your list-owner |
Re: Mystery Heinz 57 Vinegar Car?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI looked at the A1g site. There are pics of the blue car as the original Atlas car. Then there are pics of the E-R models by Roco of a newer run. This car has a brown flat with no reporting marks. I have both models somewhere but only remember there was a second run. I don't remember who did the second run. It must have been E-R. I will try to find my model to see if the E-R car says Atlas on the bottom. Chuck Seemann? ?Aurora, Colorado |
Re: Mystery Heinz 57 Vinegar Car?
I remember seeing the brown flat but can't say for certain if it had dimensional data on it or not ? The blue Flat doesn't look prototypically correct to me even though it was a offering from Atlas at the time. Most flats were painted black or brown at the time and can't see a railroad and/or customer paying ?extra cost to paint a run of cars blue. I could be completely wrong but history shows most the the time businesses run with what they got. Use the paints they have on hand.

Re: Mystery Heinz 57 Vinegar Car?
Vinegar couldn't be carried in a metal tank car because vinegar is acidic and the reaction with the metal would ruin the vinegar. Nowadays of course, they could spray the interior with some kind of liner so it wouldn't affect the vinegar but they had nothing in those days.

I remember this car with Atlas's first offerings back in the 60's but when did the prototype car get removed from service ? Such a unique looking car and surprise the vinegar wasn't hauled in a standard style to car ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Rick
