Re: Blood Bonds: Family Ties

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

(Draven)
Draven let out a moan as Anais touched him and kissed his chest.? "No, not wrong at all..."? He was about to draw her up and carry her to the bed when he placed his hands on her upper arms and gently separated from her, "but we need to get going to pack and shop for this trip."? He gave her a smile, quick kiss on the lips then stepped completely away from her to get himself dressed.

(Anais)

¡°Of course, yes right.¡± She said as he pulled away from her. The lost of not being near him so profound. ¡°I will go right that letter to the twins and Drusilla and be ready to leave shortly.¡± She said

Turning away she went back into the closet to find herself something appropriate to wear on this journey but to also catalogue ?what she thought she might need.?

A Pirates Life: Khadashee and Draven

(³§²¹¡¯¾±»å)

Sa¡¯id sighed. ¡°That is difficult. You want me to give you advice on how to present yourself to our king when one only needs to take one look at how you look at her to know how you feel for her. And I truly doubt you can mask those feelings.¡±

?

¡°If you truly want my advice it would be to take your men and leave. Otherwise, I do not see how you can not make matters worse¡ unless you pose as her owner. I mean after all before you granted her freedom, that exactly what you were?¡±

?

(Draven)

¡°Ah, well as you can see we are pulling out of the harbor now and it is too late for my men and I just to leave.? So that is out of the question. As to appearing as her owner, well the feelings will still be there. Guess we are at an impasse here.? I will simply follow Khadashee¡¯s lead and follow.¡± Draven said as he watched the sail unfurl and the wind take hold to move the ship from port to the open sea.? He truly hoped that Sa¡¯id could give him better advice than Khadashee did. But alas, it was the same advice on showing his feelings. He could easily hide what he felt for Khadashee if he needed to.? They clearly underestimate who he can appear to be when he had to be someone else. Afterall, he didn¡¯t get this far in the life of a pirate by wearing his heart on his sleeve.

?

(³§²¹¡¯¾±»å)

Sa¡¯id sighed. ¡°So let us talk man to man Captain because following Khadashee¡¯s lead is definitely not the way to go. So tell me what exactly do you want to know? How to behave in front our king. That is difficult to tell you. Knowing who you are, my king will be watching you. But what you must keep in mind is that he considers her to be his. So I really do not know what your end game is and that is what you both need to figure out.¡±

?

(Draven)

Draven listened to Sa¡¯id as he watched the open sea come into view and felt the ship lurch with the first catch of waves.? He looked back towards the harbor and saw the Serenity slowly making her way to follow. He knew the men would keep a fair distance so that it wouldn¡¯t be obvious that they were following the merchant vessel.? Then he turned to Sa¡¯id, ¡°ah, very well then. I think I can figure this one out on my own.¡± He knew now what he was going to have to do. ¡°I need to speak with the captain. Is there anything else, Sa¡¯id?¡±

?

(³§²¹¡¯¾±»å)

Sa¡¯id frowned. This man was confusing. One minute he wanted to talk and then the next he didn¡¯t. But it was no matter. It was not his place to wonder and question. It was his place to bring the queen back home and pray that everything went well. He saw his ship following in the distance. ¡°As you wish Captain Draven.¡± He nodded and moved away.? He would take this time to go speak with Khadashee.

?

(Draven)

Draven knew he had confused Sa¡¯id, but the man really didn¡¯t offer anything that Draven hadn¡¯t already known.? He gave the man a slight bow before heading off to find the Captain. Once he did, he spoke to him about helping him with a cover story and dressing as a merchant.? He knew what he needed to do and with his bundle of new clothing headed back to the cabin that he was sharing with Khadashee.

?

(Sa¡¯id and Khadashee )

Sa¡¯id and Khadashee were talking. She looked a bit tired to him. But based on everything she had told him, she and the captain had been through a whirlwind of emotions since she and the captain had decided to be together. And because of those emotions she wasn¡¯t thinking rationally.?

?

¡°Do you really think this is wise my queen. Our King still sees you as belonging to him.¡±

¡°Well That is a mistake on his part. He discarded me in the most foul of manners. I will not play a part in his deception.¡±

?

Sa¡¯id sighed. ¡°You have always been too proud and stubborn for your own good.¡±

?

She smiled at him. As the door open, her eyes meet Draven¡¯s. ¡°Hello my love. I have news.¡±

?

(Draven)

When he opened the door to the cabin he was a bit surprised to see Sa¡¯id there.? ¡°Oh, did I interrupt¡¡± he was starting to say when Khadashee gave him the brightest smile and warm greeting.? He placed his bundle along the far wall and waited for Sa¡¯id to excuse himself, he hoped. ¡°Will, Sa¡¯id be hearing this news as well, my dear?¡± He asked as he crossed the room to take her hands and gave her cheek a gentle kiss.

?

(Khadashee)

Khadashee hand reached up to stroke his chin. ¡°Sa¡¯id already knows.¡± She said looking over at the man.? ¡°I have decided to not pretend with my husband. I plan to tell him who you are and what you mean to me. He sold me willingly into the life I have now and I don¡¯t intend to be anything other than what he made me. And that is yours.¡±

?

(Draven)

Draven was surprised by all of this.? He had a plan already figured out. ¡°Um, are you sure about this?? I kind of like my head attached to my body, makes life a little more interesting that way.¡±? He said sounding a little bit concerned of this new decision. ¡°Sa¡¯id, if you don¡¯t mind, I would like to speak with Khadashee in private.¡±? He said without looking away from her.

?

(Sa¡¯id and Khadashee)

¡°Finally the man shows some reason and a backbone.¡± Sa¡¯id said. ¡°I¡¯ll be happy to leave you to it.¡± He stood and moved to kiss her cheek.

¡°If he is reasonable, and tries to talk you out of this, listen to him. If he agrees with this madness we will talk again.¡±

Khadashee rolled her eyes. She waited for Sa¡¯id to leave. ¡°My plan gives you concern.¡±

?

(New Draven)
He didn¡¯t like that Sa¡¯id felt he would need to speak to her again if he agreed.? That was his choice.

¡°Well, yes, some.? You and Sa¡¯id have both made it very clear that your husband will see you as his and will, well, kill me for you, not said in so many words.? I had come up with a plan of my own.¡± He said as he let go of her hands and went to the bundle. ¡°I can hide my feelings for you if I need to.? I spoke with the captain and he let me borrow some of his crew¡¯s clothing. I was planning on appearing as one of the crew and being an escort of your belongings and being presented as your hired hand.? If you think your plan is better than mine and feel it would be better to just be upfront with the man, then I agree. What do you say?¡± He was willing to play it anyway that she wished.

Re: Blood Bonds: Family Ties

(Anais)?

¡°I am sure you will be,¡± she said placing her hands in his chest. Her fingers running along his strong lines and tone muscle. ¡°I think so. I am hopeful that when they see how in love we are they will be put at ease.¡±

She said leaning forward to kiss the skin above his nipple. ¡°Is it wrong that I have such a hard time keeping my hands off you. My mark tingles still every time we touch in this way.¡±

[YOLW] Re: What Lies In The Heart (closed)

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

?
??Mikayla)

In the cold of night Mikayla ran. She needed to get back to her father....to her brothers...to Jon. She could not stay here.

?The wind had begun to pick up so high up into the mountains and she felt the biting wind cut at her flesh, but still she kept going.?

In the distance she could hear the howl...a howl that sounded like her name but she did not stop. She would not...

She simply couldn¡¯t.

(The Dragon, Angus)

A large black hound came running up behind Mikayla, passing her and then planting itself in the middle of the path she'd been fleeing on, blocking her way.? It didn't growl at her however, or bare its teeth.? It simply stared up at her, a look of canine pleading in its eyes.? If she moved to the left or the right, it moved with her, continuing to block her path but at no point threatening her.? Now and then it lifted its head, as if gesturing in the direction she'd come from, and then looked at her expectantly, waiting.

??Mikayla ¨C

Mikayla did not move. The dog wanted her to go back¡to the castle¡No. No! NO!

She frowned and shook her head. Mikayla stopped and did not take another step. ¡°I don¡¯t want to go back there.¡± She said to the hound. ¡°I am sorry. He is rude and aggressive and obnoxious and I just want to go home. Please,¡± she said. Instinctively Mikayla just knew that animal could understand her.

Angus must have sent it. He was such a kind man. ¡°Tell Angus.. That I respect him and understand he has a job to do which is why he sent you to me. But I am not going back. I can not be humiliated like that again.¡±

The wind had started to pick.. She stood there shivering. Her body growing cold as her hair whipped about her.?

(The Dragon, Angus)

The hound looked up at Mikayla with soulful brown eyes for a long moment. Finally, as if coming to a decision, it began to speak. The sound was decidedly strange, somewhere between human speech and a dog's gruff growling and whining. But it was speech. The hound was speaking to her.

"The master cannot help his nature," it said.? "It is a constant struggle for him, always keeping the beast in check.? But he was not trying to humiliate you.? He was _testing_ you. To see if you have the gift. And... apparently you do."

"But you stopped too soon," the hound went on urgently, "and left the spell you were reading unfinished. And you left him only half-done.? He is caught in-between now, and in enormous physical pain.? I _beg_ you, mistress.? Return with me to the keep." The animal turned to look back up the path, then looked back to her once again, eyes pleading.? "He needs you, mistress. And only you can help him."?

- Mikayla -

She blinked...then blinked again...she shook her head...no...no...it could not be...there just no way....

But it was happening to her. The hound....the creature... spoke to her...it....talked...to...her...?Mikayla opened her mouth to speak but it snapped shut just as quickly.

She shook her head. And blinked again. How in the hell....and it sounded like. ¡°Angus?¡±?mentally this was too much for her to process...This day had been too much for her to understand..

She blinked once last time to fight off the dizziness it was no avail. Her eyes fluttered closed and then sink like stone in a dead faint

?(The Dragon, Angus)

The hound stared at the unconscious Mikayla for a moment, then let his head droop in the canine equivalent of a sigh.? He was strong for a dog, but dragging her back along the path to the keep was not an option.? But neither was leaving her here in the wild forest where she'd be vulnerable to any predator that came along. There was nothing for it then, he decided, though he dearly wished there were some other solution to the dilemma. ?

Closing his eyes inconcentration, the hound began reciting an incantation - one of the only two he knew - the only part of which was comprehensible was the three times he repeated his own name.? A green mist swirled up from the ground, glowing brightly as it enveloped him, and when it disappated moments later, Angus was restored to his human form, crouched on all fours on the ground by the unconscious young woman.? Stark naked, a fact which made him distinctly uncomfortable and not prone to dawdle. ?

Scooping Mikayla up from the ground in his arms, Angus started back up the path towards the keep, hoping that the girl would not awaken until they were back in the keep and even then not until he'd had a chance to clothe himself once again.

?- Mikayla -

Mikayla yawned a loud sleepy yawn and rolled to her side. Her body nestling deeper into the warmth of the big fluffy bed and comfy down comforter.?

Fluffy bed...comfy comforter...

She sat straight up in bed. She blinked. What...was she doing here? how...did she get back here?

Mikayla mind raced. She was trying to remember the last few minutes before...did she pass out??

She?

Blood Bonds: Family Ties

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Lord Draven Phillips and Lady Anais Monroe.

(Anais)

¡°You have a brother? You didn¡¯t tell me you still had family?¡± She said with a smile, following him back inside the house. ¡°I guess we will be leaving immediately.? It seems as if he plans to throw us some grand affair.¡± She said looking up at him. ¡°You don¡¯t think he¡¯s gonna to throw us some grand affair do you?¡± She said nibbling her lip. ¡°I am only half vampire do you think he will have issues with the other half being human?¡±

?

(Draven)

¡°We hadn¡¯t discussed my family.? Yes, I have a brother.¡± Draven paused as he considered Anais¡¯ question.? ¡°Why would you think that, I believe he is indeed. As for you and being a vampire hybrid.? Well, no need to worry about that and him. He is an embraced vampire. He was a human who my father turned into a vampire.? He wasn¡¯t born of pure blood parents like I was.¡± Once inside the mansion they headed up to their bedroom. ¡°I am going to take a shower, would you like to join me, my love?¡±

?

(Anais)

¡°And even though he is embraced he still comes from a pureblood family and I am just a half breed. Who some consider her fathers to be a traitor,¡± she said as she followed him. ¡°But if you tell me I shouldn¡¯t worry. Then I will not worry. Because I have you.¡± she said holding his hand. When they reach their room, at his words she smiled. ¡°I think I would like that very much,¡± she said coming into his arms.??

?

(Draven)

¡°No, he doesn¡¯t come from a pureblood family.? His mother was a human. But that is neither here nor there.¡± Draven said as he lead her to the bathroom and started the shower.? Once the water was warm he let her step in first. ¡°Adjust the temperature as you wish,¡± he said as he stepped in behind her.

?

The shower was finished and they were both washed and clean.? It had felt good to be in warm water after the cold lake. He was drying off when a thought occurred to him, ¡°would you like Drusilla to join us at my family¡¯s estate to help you?¡±

?

(Anais)

Anais slipped into the showers and adjusted the water only slightly to make it hotter. Once he was in with her, she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him softly. ¡°I never knew it was possible to feel what I feel for another being like I feel for you. Thank you for loving me.¡±

?

She held him tight kissing him and nipping on him as the shower went on. She wanted him again but she needed to get control of that. She couldn¡¯t just go around jumping on him all the time

?

Once she out of the shower and wrapped in a fluffy robe, she sat before the vanity brushing out her wheat color locks when he asked his questions. She turned to him. ¡°Really? You will let the twins come with us?¡±

?

(Draven)

Draven returned her kisses and did all he could to fight his arousal.? He wanted her just as much as she seemed to want him, ¡°no my love, it is I who should be thanking you.? I can be a lot to take in some times.¡±

?

He was dressing and thinking about what he would need to take for this event.? They should go shopping and get some new dress wear. ¡°Not necessarily the twins, but Drusilla and her husband would be welcome as I know she would want to bring him.? I figured with all of the dressing and what not for this grand event, you might feel more comfortable with your lady helping you versus any of my mother¡¯s ladies.¡±

?

¡°We need to go shopping.? You shall have some new gowns and I could use some new formal wear.¡±

?

(Anais)

Anais squealed and jumped up and down. ¡°Yes. Oh yes please.¡± She said her face full of joy. She put her arms around his neck and kissed him quickly, gleeful. ¡°Thank you. thank you. thank you. You have made me so happy. I will send word for Dru to meet us there...wherever there is.¡± She said kissing him once again. This time with a bit more heat.

¡°Can the twins please come too¡.wait¡ how did you know the Drucilla was married to Enoch. She didn¡¯t tell me until after you sent the twins away.¡±

?

(Draven)

He was glad that he made her so happy.? Then she asked about him knowing, ¡°you told me when we were talking about Drusilla leaving because I had sent her husband away and she wanted to go with him.? Remember?¡± He remembered her saying something about it when he asked why Drusilla was leaving as well, as he didn¡¯t send her away and was surprised that the lady had left with them.? ¡°I feel that the twins might not be fully welcome as they are with my family. They are after all, werewolves. Granted I know that vampires and werewolves have been getting along for a little while now, but they would be unknowns to my people.? It wouldn¡¯t be safe for them to be there as a pair. I can get Enoch to be approved of as he is Drusilla¡¯s husband. Does that make sense?¡±

?

(Anais)

¡°Oh.¡± She said her face dejected. That happiness in her tone gone. ¡°I see. Yes. Yes. Of course that makes perfect sense.¡± She said trying not to show how very disappointed she was.

?

¡°Enoch and Memnoch never travel to foreign places without the other. They are the only person the other trust to watch his back. Neither will walk into you ancestral family home without the other and Dru will not come back to me without her husband. So I guess that is that.¡±?

?

She said lowering her head and backing away to move into the closet.

?

(Draven)

Draven hadn¡¯t thought of it or the twins in that regard and wondered why they traveled together at all times.? ¡°Anais, come here.¡± He pulled her back to him and lifted her chin to look into her eyes. ¡°Will they behave and be respectful of everyone?? I am asking because they seemed to have trouble with me when it came to you. If they can then yes, they are invited to join us. In fact, I would ask that they come here and provide you with extra protection while we travel.? I would even pay them for providing it. Is that something they would be willing to do? They would be welcome as being in my employment.¡± He knew that there were other vampires who had hired werewolves to be their protectors and they would only be providing the protection to Anais.

?

(Anais)

Anais turned and return to him. At his words, a slow smile began to fill her beautiful features. ¡°They will be as respectful to others as others are to them.¡±

When he said they could come she clasped her hands together joyfully began to squeal again. ¡°Really?¡± She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him with a heat and a passion. ¡°Thank you. I am so happy. I will send a missive asking them to come here so that you can talk to them. Set your expectations. Is that acceptable?¡±

?

(Draven)

He was glad to see her sparkle return.? She definitely had him wrapped around her little finger.? He was finding he couldn¡¯t deny her anything. Which he was glad for actually.? He returned the kiss just as passionately. ¡°Glad, and yes, that is acceptable. And I will be respectful to them, promise.? Since we are together now and you know the whole truth then they shouldn¡¯t have a problem with me any longer.¡±

?

-New Anais-

?

¡°I am sure you will be,¡± she said placing her hands in his chest. Her fingers running along his strong lines and tone muscle. ¡°I think so. I am hopeful that when they see how in love we are they will be put at ease.¡±

She said leaning forward to kiss the skin above his nipple. ¡°Is it wrong that I have such a hard time keeping my hands off you. My mark tingles still every time we touch in this way.¡±

Was¡he was¡hell! He was just worn the hell out! There was no other way to say it¡he just needed a shower, some food and to wrap his arms around Kat. The only thing that wouldn¡¯t change in that order was a shower. The shower was primary!
This was¡this was Chaos. He played by their friggin rules and he and the team needed a break. It wasn¡¯t his team¡they knew of him, but didn¡¯t know him. He realized that they ·É±ð°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù going to follow him into hell and that was what this was! The only thing he had going for him was¡experience! He had been superheroing for a long time now. But this..even this pulled at the structure of his willpower and after nearly drowning in his past¡in his own self-doubt¡yeah¡he was tapped out!!!

¡°Work in pairs, this is not a solo mission, remove the heads and heart of the little ones, they feed information to the bigger ones. We will have to work together or we will become more beaten than we are already. Move NOW!¡± He had no idea who would listen or who would follow he knew only that he couldn¡¯t stand by and see any of them hurt. He would deal with Harrison and his father once this was over, he didn¡¯t see past what was in front of him and he saw them as trying to get them killed after the psychological and physical struggles that they had seemingly all endured.

He looked at Kat and her request. ¡°Yeah¡I can!¡± He said it would only be one, that would take care of one cause he couldn¡¯t use the same trick twice, the machines were truly adaptive. He listened to Kat and smirked at her strategy. Maybe she would be a better leader?!? ¡°Good plan.¡±

Mia didn¡¯t balk, it was a good plan and set about doing what she could to help and the mudballs were righteous. Even now he couldn¡¯t help but smirk at the thought of her skill. ?Kites and Gen moved to work together and he saw the pair being good at aerial attacks together and he would request later that they work on that in conjunction with one another.

Brandon smirked it he had anything to do with this he would have been proud but he had been so focused on helping everyone else get through the other obstacles that he didn¡¯t think of the end¡that didn¡¯t make a good leader in his mind. ?He didn¡¯t need that right now, there was no time for fear or self-doubt, if any one of them got hurt because he was in his mind then he was no good to any of them. He moved to punch to the head of one augmenting his strength to take its head off while pinning the body to the ground. He glanced over at Kites and Gen to make sure they were ok. He felt Kat close by him, making sure she would be able to get the heart out once it went down. Yet he turned to make sure Mia had some cover of protection as well. No one would get hurt on his watch. He wasn¡¯t he punkass Rain always told him he was. He was going to simply do what needed to be done.

He was moving forward keeping everyone inside over the scream of the attacks everyone was doing. ¡®Comm-sets. So, they can hear whoever the leader is and change tactics accordingly. Coordinate attacks and move, can¡¯t hesitate. Leave no person defenseless. Mia should have been with Kat for support and he should have been solo or at least a target. It would have allowed the fliers more time to get their tactics down. He was about to blast another when one by one the droids began to combust from the inside out. He frowned wondering what was going on. When the giant bots did the same he looked around really confused.

When the doors opened and the lights came on, he went to check on everyone. ?¡°Y'all ok?!?¡± He said thinking this was quite the showing they all had today. Good under the circumstances but a very long way to go¡especially him. ¡®Totally uphill battle.¡¯ He thought.

(Kat)

Kat gave a nod to Mia when she said she couldn't due fog but mud was doable. "Good" When Brandon said he could bring one down her eyes grew bright and she smiled.. "Let's do this." She caught Kite and Gen head in the other direction. She hoped that between the five of them they might be able to tame down two.

She took cover for a moment while Mia chucked mud balls at the smaller ones. Giving their lenses. If they can't see then it restricts what they can send. Seeing Brandon take another smaller on down she takes the opportunity to get there and start ripping at its plating. Using all her strength she starts to tear through the hull.

It was heavy going. She heard just in time when Gen said something about covering ears. She didn't realize what Gen meant till her ears almost burst from the winged avenger. Folding her ears back as much as she could. The the pain was almost to much. She almost had to stop trying to get the chest open on the robot.

As she continued she felt the chest on it start to buckle a little. She knew it wasn't from her. Jumping off she stood back and watched as the things started to explode from the inside. She then looked around to see the rest doing the same. Finding Brandon she went to him. Standing next to him as the he called for the others to see if they were ok.

Her hearing had started to equal out again when the doors opened and in walked Ireland Harrison and Chord. Kat shook her head slightly and looked to Brandon and whispered. "I take it that this had not been planned." She will follow Brandon¡¯s lead.

(Mia)

So much happened so fast that Mia didn¡¯t have time to think and simply acted on instinct using mud and water to fling at the robots. ?Then suddenly she was covered in muddy water from the one that was knocked over into the electrical lake. ?The robot that she had been flinging mud at suddenly stopped advancing on her and she stopped and stood still for a moment. ?She stared to feel the cold of the water and realized that the robot lost sight of her. ?Her body temp had dropped some and she realized it was trying to find her heat signal and since she wasn¡¯t moving and the mud covering part of it¡¯s ¡°eyes¡± it couldn¡¯t see her.

She stood still for a few more moments waiting to see what it would do next when all of the sudden the bird boys in the air started screeching. ?¡°Agh,¡± she quickly covered her ears, dropped to the ground and began rolling way to find shelter from the robots. ?She realized that this was going to be a loosing battle for them and it was time to just stop. ?She was worn out from the obstacle course and now had no more energy left to mix and fling elements. ?She rolled until she came to some barrels and still covering her ears moved around behind them and once sitting up right looked to see what was happening.

The robot that had temporarily lost sight of her seemed to be standing there watching her roll away, like it was confused that she was retreating. ?It didn¡¯t try and chase her and then suddenly it was dropping to the ground. ?She had watched as the ones that the boys were attacking suddenly grabbed their wings. ?She took her hands away from her ears, briefly to see if the screeching had stopped.

Then all of the robots were collapsing, the lights came up full, the doors opened, and in walked their boss and company. ?She stood up from behind the barrels and waited to see what was next.

[Kites]

As Kites dove at the same bot again, using the speed with which he was hurtling through the air, he hadn't expected that it was going to simply sidestep his attack. ?But it was too late to change the direction of his drop because of all the built-up momentum. ?As his feet hit the ground, he immediately started sliding, but as he threw his wings out in an attempt to counterbalance the forces, he suddenly slipped and fell face first right into the muddy muck below. ?Though some of it managed to cushion his fall, he still hit the floor pretty hard, knocking all the wind and bravado right out of him. ?All that was left was the wave of exhaustion that crashed right back down on top of him. ?But now was not the time to think about it. ?He had to push through this, no matter what.

"Get up, Kites, get up, now! ?He hissed to himself, struggling to get up. ?Wait, Gen! ?Where was Gen?! ?He wildly looked around, trying to get a hold of where she was, not realizing that the bots were slowly circling him. ?Every second he wasted is a second closer that they got to him. ?Suddenly, he heard Gen yelling and as he turned to try and get a fix on her, she let loose a barrage of high pitched, sonic screams. ?He gritted his teeth as he felt extremely sharp pain in his ears, wincing as his hands immediately flew up to cover them, trying to keep the sound out or at least muffle the frequency. ?Before he knew it, however, the two bots flanked him and he suddenly felt four very strong hands grab hold of and squeeze his wings.

"Let-let go of me!" he shouted, trying his hardest to flap them away, but the more he struggled, the more the bots squeezed and held him down. ?It was starting to hurt, so he lashed out, balling his hand up as he slammed one right into one of the bots' faces, immediately regretting the action. ?In that sheer moment of foolishness, he forgot that they were made out of metal and as his fist connected with its face, pain unlike what he's ever experienced in his life raced through his whole arm. ?Yelling out in pain, he dropped to his knees, clutching his hand to his chest. ?Forcing himself to bear through the pain, he looked up just to see another group of bots grab hold of Gen, plucking her right out of the air. ?His heart dropped as he helplessly watched them swing her around, suddenly letting go as she hurtled into the ground. ?"Sh-shit! ?Gen! ?Gen, are you okay?" ?He tried to rush forward, but try as he might to move, he couldn't. ?The bots had a steel handed grip on his wings and they weren't budging one inch, simply waiting for the others to neutralize the rest of their team.

The rest of the team seemed to be doing better. ?At least, neither Brandon nor Kat were caught. ?In fact, it looked like they had made some progress in fighting back against the droids. ?Mia seemed to be able to handle herself, rolling out of the way when one tried to advance at her, skillfully wrapping it in mud in an effort to slow it down. ?However, both he and Gen had failed, and quite spectacularly at that. ?Just when he started to feel despair, Kites felt like his wings were vibrating and when he looked back, the droids were violently shaking. ?Several explosions seemed to ring out from inside their bodies as they suddenly stopped moving and fell away like ragdolls, un-moving and dead. ?As he looked around, the same happened with the rest of them, falling away like leaves in the wind.

"Wh-what the h-hell just h-happened?" he asked, trying to stand up, feeling his legs shake as he did so. ?Just then, the entire training center lit up like Christmas and the doors at the back slid open with a woosh as three people stepped inside. ?Chord, the hologram lady that greeted him in a guest room long ago, and the fiery redhead, Ireland. ?He visibly shrank when he saw her. ?He looked away, head hung in shame, as he waited to hear just how much of a failure she, or they, thought he was.

(Gen)

Suddenly, it was over. ?Gen picked herself up cautiously from the mud where she'd been thrown by one of the Sentinels. Debris from the exploded droids was all around her and she didn't want to get cut by any sharp edges. ?She was exhausted, barely able to stand. Her mud-coated wings felt so heavy it was all the androgyne could do to fold them against her back. And she ached all over, every joint and every muscle. ?She was tough but she could feel pain like anyone else. ?

But worst of all, she felt humiliated. ?Everything she'd tried went wrong. ?Her attacks on the battle droids had failed to stop even one of them for more than a minute or two. ?And her impulsive attempts to disable the cameras had apparently failed as well. ?And worst of all, her use of her sonic power had done far more to disrupt and create problems for her teammates than it had as a weapon against the droids and sentinels.

"Sorry," Gen mumbled, unable to look at the others, her wings drooping behind her. ?"I should've told you I could do that before we started. ?I just... I dunno... wanted it to be a surprise."

Then the doors slid open and Chord, Imogene and... Ireland?... strode into the testing area. Exhausted and humiliated as she was, Gen felt a wave of fury take over her. ?"You guys suck!" she yelled, glaring at Chord and Imogene, her anger overpowering her usual respect for authority, at least for the moment. ?"And it wasn't enough that you had to give us a beat down? You let Ireland watch?" she went on, a flush of fresh embarrassment burning her face beneath the mud. ?Giving one final scream of sheer fury, the androgyne kicked at a detached droid-head, sending it flying across the test area.

(Chord, Imogene, Ireland)

?

¡°So today was an interesting and eventful day,¡± Chord said as he trying to sound upbeat and reassure the team as he walked into the room with Ireland to his left and Harrison to his right. He was fully prepared to fall back and let Harrison advise the team in the whatever manner saw fit, which was exactly what he said he would do when he finally wore her down enough for her to agree to come to work alongside of him to whip this ragtag bunch into shape.?

?Harrison was just about to speak when Gen cut her off. Chord¡¯s jaw ticked. The taller older man, placed both his hands in his pockets, a move that both Ireland and Brandon would recognize.?

¡°I got this Imogen,¡± He said to Harrison as he came to stand deceptively casually before Gen,

Oh this was not going to be good Ireland thought¡

¡°I have never been big on temper tantrum so let me be very clear that neither I nor Ms. Harrison will tolerate them. Thus if you are given to such useless display of emotions this program¡we¡± he gestured to everything around her, ¡°is not a good fit for you. Furthermore, if you found today hard, good. Get used to it. Each new day from here only get harder.? Understand that this is not the Gen saves the world show and judging by the look of your performance today it appears you think it is. And it for damn sure isn¡¯t the pre-game show for any kind of extracurricular activity your raging hormones might have your brain pre-occupied with.¡± ?His eyes flicked to Kites.

¡°This is not some video game. You are not here to live our some hero fantasy. You are not here to eat and get laid.¡± He said looking first firmly at Gen and then past her to Kites, and then Kat and finally lingering on Brandon with a disappointed look.

¡°When you walk into this room its real life.? Its test your mettle. Its push your limits. Its learn your weaknesses and test your strengths. It is not play time. Its shut-up, fall back, shut up, stop blaming others for your screw-ups, take some ownership of your mistakes and learn time because what we do here are matters of life and death¡for you, your team and civilians. So if today¡¯s activities have your panties in a snit¡if you don¡¯t like mine or Harrison¡¯s tactics¡the is door right there,¡± he said stepping aside so that Gen could see there was a clear path to the door with no one blocking her way.

¡°You can walk out and be about you merry way. None the wiser with our well wishes, otherwise understand your role and the program. And as far as Ireland watching¡contrary to what you think,¡± his eyes landing on Kites. ¡°Ireland is your biggest cheerleader and a wonderful judge of character. And since ?the purpose of today¡¯s exercise was to see what we were working with¡if you could adapt and learn. If you were trainable and coachable. We were testing your personal abilities and the ability for you to come together and work together as a team in a high pressure, stressful situations, please understand you failed miserable. If Ireland wasn¡¯t watching, you would still be flying around screaming at unbreakable cameras, potential injuring yourself and your team getting your ass handed to you by battle droids. It was because of her that the bots self-destructed. When neither you or Kites conferred with your team lead about the best way to approach the defeat of the bots...she realized that you were giving the bots the opportunity to learn your movements with your solo continuous attacks. When your team lead failed to do just that...lead... Ireland realized someone was going to get seriously hurt. She is A computer wiz, after asking me...begging me in fact to end the test, she hacked into my computer causing them to self destruct. So make sure you thank her.¡±

He said moving to the door. ¡°Oh and effective today. Ireland is your new team lead. ¡°

¡°Wait...what...¡±Ireland said...she looked at Brandon.?

¡°Now all of you get washed and changed and eat. i expect anyone who plans to be apart of this team actually be apart of this team to report classroom B first thing tomorrow morning. Good night.¡± He said gesturing for Imogene to follow him out of the room.?

Once Chord and Imogene we¡¯re gone, Ireland turned to Brandon. ¡°I had no idea he was going to do that. I swear.¡± She said. ¡°I gotta go but we will talk later.¡± She said leaving out too.

Troy Rising: New Problems for Turriq the Butcher

In the history of Ocillia, Aiden Turriq would be known by many names.? His soldiers would call him ¡°Father Turriq¡± and for a time ¡°Turriq the Undefeated¡±.? The Church of the Holy Twelve would call him ¡°Turriq the Crusader¡±, for the way he carried the banner of Father Church into the Northlands.

The people of the Northlands had a different name for him:? Turriq the Butcher. Turriq, Butcher of Masden. Bloody Aiden.

In truth, he hadn¡¯t meant for the sack of Masden to go the way it had.? He wanted the city intact and mostly unharmed. It would¡¯ve been a strategic port from which he could¡¯ve started a two-prong fight against the Kievan Rus, with the goal of getting them to abandon their harassment of Ispaaran shipping.

He had given his conditions of surrender days before, insofar as he had been allowed to name them.? The Duke of Masden would be allowed to keep his title, so long as he accepted submission to the King of Ispaara and joined his army to Turriq¡¯s forces.? Father Church had been the one to demand the enforcement of the Act of Restitution¡ªreclaiming treasures and properties the once belonged to Father Church, and he reluctantly went along.

He was sure that had been the deciding factor.? If not for the Church¡¯s demands, he was pretty sure he could¡¯ve gotten the city intact without a lengthly siege.? He¡¯d have the shipyards, the yard dogs, the warships already in port. By spring, he could have started his campaign to force a route past the Kievan Rus, and Ispaara could have conquered most of the Northlands by the end of the year.

If not for Hoffsteiner, he thought bitterly.? Fucking Hoffsteiner¡

The fact that he needed the man¡ªthen and now¡ªonly added salt to his wounded ego.? If ever the term ¡°loose cannon¡± could have been invented for anyone, it would¡¯ve been made for Field Marshall Jonas Hoffsteiner, and his dragon cavalry, the Black Riders.

He had few air elements under his command, and he needed whatever he could get.? It didn¡¯t mean he had to like it.

When he began the siege, he had specifically ordered the Black Riders to attack the walls only.? The walls, not the city inside. Masden had no dragon cavalry to speak of, so he wanted to use his in softening the defenders.

An hour into the siege, and Hoffsteiner and his Riders were burning buildings.? It only got worse from there. As soon as the walls of Masden fell, the rest of his mercenaries, fueled by rage and victory, began to loot and plunder, effectively following Hoffsteiner¡¯s example.? What had followed was two days of rape and pillage. Three days later, it was still raining ashes over what was left.

In the shadow of his failure to reorder the troops, he had found a crying baby in the arms of its dead mother.? He had taken it upon himself to take up the infant and give it shelter in his command tent. It was one life that wouldn¡¯t be lost that day.

He¡¯ll probably grow up to be my killer, Turriq thought dourly.? And so the cycle of revenge continues.

A week and a half later, he was going through reports from his advance units.? Several villages had been taken, but a lot of them were half empty, with refugees fleeing eastward, toward the Bitch Queen herself, more than likely.

And there was the other problem.? Rayna, Queen of the Sword, was taking a personal hand in this affair.? That Pagan bitch was nothing but trouble. Father Church had labelled her and all followers of the Goddess as apostate, but that didn¡¯t seem to bother her in the least.?

His only saving grace, ironically, was the divisiveness of the Northlands¡¯ own nobility. As hard as it was for him to conquer this land, it had been even harder for that bitch to convince them to unite under a single banner.

He smirked at that thought.? Getting that self serving mob of arrogant pricks to cooperate?? He¡¯d have an easier time getting a legion of cats to form a tercio and march in formation.

He was interrupted from that picture in his head by an officer entering his tent, and saluting.? ¡°Father Turriq!¡±

Ah well, back to the real world.? ¡°What is it, boy? Spit it out!¡±

¡°A Black Rider¡¯s returned, sir,¡± the young officer said.? ¡°He¡¯s alone.¡±

¡°What of it?¡± Turriq demanded.? ¡°I mean, sure it¡¯s unusual not to come back with your mates, but so what?¡±

¡°It¡¯s¡well,¡± the lad was obviously trying to put it in words.? ¡°You¡might want to see this for yourself, sir.¡±

¡°Oh very well,¡± he said with a resigned sigh.? ¡°Lead the way.¡±

He was a bit annoyed, truth to tell.? What could be so important that he had to go in person to see this singular dragon rider?? It wasn¡¯t as if Field Marshall Hoffsteiner had gotten himself killed. Hells, he might¡¯ve come running to see that.? So, what could be so damned¡

He stopped dead in his tracks as he looked upon the moaning mass of scales and claws that used to be a Black Rider¡¯s dragon in fighting trim.? The beast¡it was bleeding from several large holes in its scales. Those scales could withstand even the finest arquebuses, with scales harder than most metals forged.

There was a dragon handler nearby, throwing a fit over the condition of the beast.? He summoned him over. ¡°What happened here?¡±

¡°I¡¯m not sure, my Lord,¡± the old man said.? ¡°Something powerful pierced this dragon¡¯s hide.? I¡¯m not sure what kind of weapon can do that. I probed one of the wounds, but all I could find was this.¡±

He produced a small, vaguely cone-shaped projectile that measured about an inch long.? He handled it, and was amazed to find that whatever it was, it was heavier than lead shot, and it was encased in what looked like metal.? But it made no sense that something so small could cause such grievous wounds on a dragon.

¡°Will the dragon survive?¡± he asked.

The old dragon handler shook his head.? ¡°I fear not, my Lord. There are many such wounds on this poor beast.? I¡¯m amazed dragon and rider made it this far.¡±

¡°What of the rider?¡± Turriq asked.? ¡°Did he live?¡±

¡°Barely my Lord,¡± the old man answered.? ¡°He¡¯s been taken to the healer¡¯s tent. I believe they¡¯re treaing him now.¡±

He stood there for a moment, before coming forward to the poor pitiable dragon.? Its eye darted a look over at him, but otherwise made no move as Turriq placed a gentle hand on the beast¡¯s head.? All it did was let out a miserable moan.

¡°Put it out of its misery,¡± Turriq ordered.? ¡°No need to let the poor beast suffer further.¡±

¡°Yes, my Lord.¡±

He hurriedly made his way over to the healer¡¯s tent, wherein he found a small knot of priests and deacons hovering over a man.? By the pile of discarded clothes, weapons and armor, this was the dragon rider.

¡°Will he live,¡± he asked the crowd of healers.? An older priest of the Twelve turned to him.

¡°It¡¯s difficult to say, my Lord,¡± he said, looking frustrated.? ¡°These wounds¡they¡¯re few in number, but far more grievous than appearances give.¡±

¡°I need him to survive, Elder,¡± Turriq said gravely.? ¡°Something, or someone, is in possession of a weapon that can penetrate dragonscale, and right now, the answers are locked up in that man¡¯s head.? Pull whoever or whatever you need. Right now, he¡¯s to recieve the best care above all others. Am I clear, Elder?¡±

¡°You are, my Lord.¡±

¡°³Ò´Ç´Ç»å!¡±

He left the healer¡¯s tent, having made his wishes very clear.? All he could do now is wait, and send word to his other forces.? He¡¯d find out where that rider had come from soon enough. When he had that, he could plan accordingly.

Right now, all he could do is wonder what new enemy was menacing him.

Re: Troy Rising: After the Flash ¡ª Julian, Jan & Company

Something large and lumbering was moving down the road in long strides.?

¡°Eh, Julian, we got dragons.¡±

She turned to Lucia, held up her vid screen, ¡°Tell me I¡¯m not going fucking bananas.¡±

[OOC:? I missed a piece in the last post.? So, THIS is the "all caught up" one you should read :) ]

¡°¶Ù°ù²¹²µ´Ç²Ô²õ!?¡±

The response came from both Lucia to her left, and Julian over the comm.

Lucia walked over, and did a double-take when she looked at the vid screen.? Sure enough, there were three dragons. They looked a bit odd, though¡little odds and ends that seemed to stick out.? And why were they chasing a giant dust cloud?

¡°Here¡allow me,¡± she said, as she fiddled with a few controls.? ¡°See if you can bring #2 closer to the deck¡that¡¯s it, good! I¡¯ll just play with the filters here, aaaaand¡¡±

Drone #2 got down to about 5 meters height, while the other two closed from on high.? The imagery blinked a few times, until the filters and focus worked together and provided a clearer picture.

¡°Well¡shit,¡± Lucia said.

The dragons themselves were quite a sight.? Serpentine bird-like bodies, lithe and lean, covered in bluish-black scales that glittered in the sunlight. Each was easily twice to three times the size of a Clydesdale horse. Their magnificent wings were translucent membranes stretched between long bony fingers¡ªmuch like a bat¡¯s wings.? They occasionally took a beat before simply continuing a slow glide over their quarry.

The more curious sight was the man perched on the back of each dragon.? Although still at range, both of them could make out the elaborate saddle and harness the riders were strapped into.? They seemed to be in similar uniforms to the soldiers they¡¯d been fighting, save for the helmets, which seemed to come equipped with something similar to full on eye protection¡ªgoggles?? In their off hand, each carried what looked to be a short club of some sort. What was that for?

And then there was what they seemed to be following.

On the ground was a wooden four-wheeled cart, pulled by a pair of horses similar to Clydesdales.? At its driving bench was an older man working hard to drive the two draft horses to even greater exertion.? In the rear was a woman, who was taking a tremendous risk standing up at those speeds.

But there must¡¯ve been something wrong with the filters on the drone¡¯s camera.? The old man seemed to have deep green skin, while the woman¡¯s complexion was¡blue?

And then it got strange.

The lead dragon rider used his short club and whacked the back of his dragon¡¯s neck twice.? A moment later, the dragon bellowed and let out a stream of flame. Below, the woman noticed, raised her hands into the air, waving them in an obvious pattern¡

A shield of white translucent energy suddenly appeared between the wagon and the dragonfire.? The flames washed off the barrier, but not before cracks appeared in it. The moment the fire stream ceased, the shield completely shattered and disappeared.

¡°So¡dragons AND magic users,¡± Lucia said, offhandedly.? ¡°We¡¯re in a fuckin¡¯ D&D game! Jefe!? They¡¯re following this dirt road into the forest!¡±

At that moment, Julian had been completing his walk around the property, and at one end, he noticed the beginnings of a dirt road, leading off into the forest¡in the direction he was hoping it wasn¡¯t leading.

He sighed.? ¡°°¿°ì²¹²â, get the family and Marco into the deep forest and get going toward the freeway,¡± he ordered.? He picked up his radio receiver. ¡°Janet, I know this is a dumb question before I ask it, but can you drive an FAV?? It¡¯s just like driving a dune buggy, and I need a favor from you and Lucia ASAP.¡±

Madre Dios, he thought.? I don¡¯t need all this shit!

¡°If it has any tech I can,¡± Jan replied. ¡°I also trained in the old ICV bubble bumpers. They used manual controls for the most part.¡±

It was inane and not op verified but Jan thought she¡¯d give it a try.

¡°³¢³Ü³¦¾±²¹, I can fly that drone right in front of that dragon and freak it¡¯s shit. Just a thought.¡±

She adjusted the flight control to augment mental command. A trick of the light sort of thing.?

¡°Maybe make some passes right in front of its eyes.¡±

Jan didn¡¯t wait for a reply. She maxed the power and drove the first drone down under the canopy. As she suspected the first pass was a resounding success. The drone was fast and as it lost altitude it gathered speed. She inserted her vision and senses into the drone and dove madly downward. At the last possible moment she flashed right in front of the lead dragon¡¯s eyes. With sublime timing she gun the rotors in a twisting turn the must have caused a small ruckus.?

The dragon was focused solely on the road and the fleeing target. When the whirring bird object appeared in its face an instinctive defensive measure made it careen wildly to the side. It made a stab at biting Jan but missed. The attempt slowed the dragon and a low branch caught it right on a shoulder. The branch snapped away harmlessly but the dragon completely caught off guard took off straight up into the sky. Self preservation it appeared was an essential dragon trait.?

The following two dragons unaware of the drone attack merely followed the lead dragon for some reason believing that was the new pursuit direction.?

On the back of the retreating cart the female magic caster grimaced in surprise but then smiled. Luck had changed the day! Now what in the name of Saul was that thing? She searched out seeking the thing with her mind¡¯s eye. A strange consciousness felt her invasion. Perception of a wink came back at her from the creation. Odd indeed!?

Zafiri Col Naarmyr had almost been certain they were done for the moment that dragon flight.? It must be doing long patrol from Masden.

Masden¡or what was left of it, if the stories of fleeing refugees was true.? She never thought anyone, not even Turriq, could do what he had done. And now his troops were spreading out.? Her father had hoped that, as long as they kept going by carriage, they could stay ahead of the advance. It hadn¡¯t been easy.? They had passed up a number of refugees on foot, pleading to be taken along.

They hadn¡¯t stopped for any of them.? Not for the women, not the children. Her father had been tasked by the Queen of Apa, and the results of that request had been secreted within concealed sections of the chests they carried.? There was the obvious provisions, but also many of her father¡¯s medical and philosophy books. Even her books on spellcraft occupied one of them. In each chest was a false bottom, and inside each were 20 silver bars.? Given the number of chests they carried, that was a small fortune that rode with them, and they were tasked to getting it to the Queen and her allies.

They had received writs of safe passage in Kolto, before sailing to Klausburg, with the idea of meeting with the Queen¡¯s people in Masden, and finding some sort of sanctuary in the Torquani quarter there.

So much for plans.

Today, on the road south, Turriq¡¯s army found them in the form of a dragon flight.

There was no way their horse-and-cart combination could have outrun those beasts, but instead of finishing them off, the soldiers had a different idea:? They¡¯d play with the fleeing tieflings for a while, at least until their horses gave out.

That was the game.? Of course, to make sure they made it, Zafiri just HAD to conjure up a shield once they started spitting fire and acid at them.? Now they couldn¡¯t just let them go. If they didn¡¯t kill her, they¡¯d capture her. She¡¯d be killed, or worse captured. She¡¯d be brought before the inquisitors for being a Torquani who had the Gift of magic.? They¡¯d¡ª

No!? She told herself.? Focus! One thing at a time¡feel the magic¡¯s pull¡form another shield¡start drawing mana for another¡ª

Then something happened.? The lead dragon¡it looked like it was struck¡by something small?? It pulled back and wheeled upward. The dragons behind, not knowing what was happening, instinctively followed in the tangled spiral, as their riders tried beating their beasts with their goads in a desperate effort to regain control.

They had a chance¡by Saul they had a chance!

But what happened?? Something was out there, but she wasn¡¯t sure what.? She called up the Wizard¡¯s Sight, searching with her third eye, pinging the weave of the world¡and the weave¡winked?

Well that was odd¡ª

¡°Zafiri¡¡± came a groan from the front bench.? ¡°I need you¡¡±

¡°¹ó²¹³Ù³ó±ð°ù?¡±

¡°Take the reins,¡± he said quietly.? ¡°I¡¯m so tired¡¡±

He tried to hide the fact that he was rubbing inside his robe.? There was pain in his chest again. It had gone away, but it was back.? The stress of the chase, and controlling the horses¡

She made her way forward and took the reins¡

¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª

¡°¡and now the dragons are spiraling away,¡± Lucia explained.? ¡°I never saw a trick like that.¡±

¡°I have,¡± Julian said.? ¡°It¡¯s an old Army Ranger trick.? One recon drone to get rid of an attack chopper or AV-4 that gets too cocky.? Good job, Janet.¡±

¡°Why so worried?¡± Lucia asked.

¡°Two reasons,¡± he said.? ¡°First, those dragon riders are eventually going to get bored.? When they do, they¡¯re going to take note of the CHOOH2 fields, and the road leading to Troy.? In the boots of those FAV¡¯s are an M-60 and an RPG launcher, respectively. They might be the only tools we have to bring those beasts down.

¡°Second¡we need to make some friends, and I have a feeling that saving a wizard in distress might be a good way to start making them.? So move your asses.¡±

¡°Right Cap,¡± Jan said instinctively. The inclusion and praise had raised her spirits. The feeling was dashed just as suddenly as reality set in. She was back in the thick of it.?

¡°³¢³Ü³¦¾±²¹,¡± auto command your drones back here. We¡¯ve got to bug out yesterday!¡±

Jan abandoned the controller after sending a return request to her three drones. She ran hard for the two FAV¡¯s still camped nearby.?

This was an advanced vehicle from the ICV¡¯s in her past but functionally it was identical. She pulled open the door and landed in the driver¡¯s seat with a thud. Just as comfortable as she remembered. With a pull on the power switch the four wheels plowed deep ruts in the fertile field. The repeater on the roof would do her little good without a shooter but for the moment that wasn¡¯t necessary. As the FAV accelerated for the tree line she caught sight of Lucia following behind.?

The dash of the FAV had a wonderful heads up display with graphics, instant sat positioning and link to the command structure that included helmet sight, appointment and direction of assault. Unfortunately the Sats were gone and the unit was doing without optical helmet displays. The screen image was getting a fix on the unit as a group via communications guidance but the directional display was spinning slowly as it couldn't grasp not having sat information or a magnetic pole to fix on.?

Jan dove mentally into the display using her Psy-tech skill to manually adjust compass altitude and longitude. She used the sun as a sort of north south reference. Instantly the display righted itself. Using the new global orientation it depicted the unit as 2 klicks NW. She pushed the capability to the other FAV.?

Just in time she let her awareness note real world circumstances. They¡¯d made good time to the edge of the old world. The woods of this foregn place loomed. She slowed to a crawl and made time as best she could through the thickly wooded forest.

Jan managed not to crumple the FAV into a tree and soon the burning building and her new outfit came into view. Sliding to a stop she jumped out and examined the mounted weapon on the roof.?

The double-barreled Shriek was pointed rearward. She raced to the load out compartments and examined the contents.?

Lucia drove up with equivalent violence the FAV doing a nice imitation of a slurve.?

¡°Hey,¡± Jan shouted. ¡°Do we have ordinance for the Shriek?¡±

A tap on her shoulder made her jump.

¡°It¡¯s on the other side. That¡¯s the RPG.¡±

Jan nodded numbly. ¡°I¡¯m Jan.¡±

Jan smiled then covered it with a neutral grimace, ¡°Well Meat you grab that RPG and I¡¯ll see if I can¡¯t wrangle the ammo for the Shriek.¡±

Others were running up now and she recognized Julian. Several of the men were blood splattered but none looked harmed.?

She cast Julian a sloppy salute and a look of concern. ¡°We going to extract those people in the FAV¡¯s?

?????They had two FAV¡¯s, an RPG, the Shriek (which he thought was an M-60 for some reason¡ªmust be getting old), and lots of small arms.? There were two people coming on the ground, and one of them was apparently a wizard. He was hoping there was some way to communicate they meant no harm.? He still wasn¡¯t sure what these guys were speaking. It sounded¡Eastern Euro-speak.

?????Then there were the three dragons and their riders.? What they did really depended on whether they wanted to continue pursuit, take note of the smoke, or one of them could go ¡°Hey!? Has anyone noticed that wheat field before?¡± at any point. In fact, he was pretty sure it was only a matter of time.

????¡°³¢³Ü³¦¾±²¹?? Get your drones back up,¡± he said.? ¡°Keep an eye on those dragons. I want to know what their activity is.¡±

????¡°Meat, get the RPG out,¡± he continued.? ¡°I¡¯ll give you your set-up point in a bit.? Double-time our wounded out of here¡¡±

????He was cut short by the sound of thundering hooves coming closer.? From the curving road, it came. Two enormous horses, drawing a wooden four-wheeled cart.? Behind it was a man and a woman, and contrary to Lucia¡¯s opinion on camera filters, the man was green, and the woman was blue!

????There was more, though.? The man was older, with forest green skin, advanced balding dark grey hair, and a long chin-drape beard.? What most stood out were the horns, black in color and curving back along the crown of his head.

????The woman, she had a deep blue skintone, hair so black it seemed to absorb the light, and a small pair of horns that were beginning to spiral like ram¡¯s horns.? Despite these peculiar things, or maybe because of them, she was beautiful.

????Despite himself, Julian was grinning.? They ·É±ð°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù just fighting dragons, they were rescuing a damsel in distress.

¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª

????Zafiri had her attention in three places.? There were still dragon riders about. What if that meant there were more soldiers?? Her father¡¯s condition was getting worse, and she was worried about him falling off of the bench.? She had control of the horses, but just barely. If the road curved too much¡ª

????She acted before thinking, yanking back on the reins as she fought to bring the horses to a stop.? The mighty Clydesdales came to a halt, but the cart slid sideways, its back right wheel falling into a rut.

????Before her were people.? Zafiri had never seen clothing like what they were wearing.? One man¡she couldn¡¯t help but stare. He stood out, with his swarthy complexion, sharp facial features, regal bearing¡Trinity no!? An Ispaaran Hidalgo? Here? Her heart began to sink¡but she wasn¡¯t going without a fight, no matter how drained she was.

¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª

????Julian froze as the woman rose in the seat, gestured with her hands, and watched as those hands began to glow, limbed in blue flame.

Jan stood apart from her new unit. Was she really back at this again? Like the others she was hypnotized by the odd features of these humanoids. Language was going to be bitch but she thought there might be another way.

Using her Psy talent she pushed outwards with her mind. The animals were exhausted but still excited. She felt some net of energy around them. She followed the strand to the woman in blue who was doing something new with her own talents.?

Using just emotion with her thoughts Jan projected calm and peace. Tentatively she tried to convey friendship. ¡®We are not your enemy. We mean you no harm.¡¯?

Some other energy she was not accustomed to feeling also moved from her mind to the one in blue. She couldn¡¯t describe it as metal more like some form of energy. It was emanating from her but the power was not. The uneasiness in her grew. Power was coming from all around her. It filled her with a dream-like serenity that made her want to dance and laugh out loud. The land wasn¡¯t technological why was it powering her like this?

Streams of energy flowed in from the ground, the trees and even her Nomad comrades. It came to her naturally. She tried to calm this new potency and with some effort was able to. The tendrils of essence or power whatever it was did seem to react to her wishes.?

Shaking her head to clear the dream-like quality of this new power she refocused on the blue mage.

Words came to her. Not english or Spanglish or German but some new tongue.?

¡®I am Janet. We are a lost people new to this world. Forgive us our appearance and behaviors. We only came to help the victims of some horrible men. We killed them.? I am the one who buzzed the dragon. I was trying to help.¡¯

A reply came quickly to her mind.

¡®Zafiri Col Naarmyr I am named. Thoughts are strange, perplexing but I understand. You are not evil!¡¯

The first obvious indication that things might¡¯ve been de-escalating was when the blue lady¡¯s hands stopped glowing, and she lowered them.? Julian however was giving Janet a sideways glance, then he looked at blue damsel again, and back to Janet, and began to wonder¡

He had only been a noncomm during the Polar War, but he had heard the rumors¡ªall sorts of rumors¡including something about a psychic unit, or ¡°Psy-Ops¡±.? He never really concentrated on those, however. First off, rumors were rumors, and therefore often bullshit. Secondly, the rumors that ·É±ð°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù so much fertilizer but possibly true were probably well above his pay grade.

If she is Psy-ops though, I think we¡¯ll need a talk, he thought.? Right now though, I¡¯m just glad she kept the peace.

A groan escaped the old man, and a look of panic crossed as she turned to see him slide/fall off the bench seat and onto the ground.? Suddenly Zafiri¡¯s thoughts went into a panic.

¡®Father no!? Nononono¡please.? Don¡¯t leave me all alone I need you¡!¡¯

Julian didn¡¯t need a translation for what was happening.? ¡°Medic! Now!¡±

One of the remaining med-wagon drivers¡ªAbed, if he recalled¡ªstrode up.? He was already pulling out his medscanner, and saw the ¡°Bones McCoy sticking up out of his rucksack.

Julian quickly went over to Janet, and spoke quietly.? ¡°Not exactly sure what you¡¯re doing, but can you assure her our man here is going to try and help?¡±

¡°Jefe!¡± barked Lucia. ¡°You wanted me to let you know when those dragons changed course?? Well, they did. And I think they spotted us, ¡®cuz they¡¯re coming in fast. ETA, about 10 minutes!¡±

±·³Ü³Ù³ú¡

Jan nodded, ¡°Zfiri nala donchi.¡±

Zfiri replied in an unspoken glance in the unverbal dream speak that they had used before.

¡®They are tough. Yet just below the head at the very middle of their neck is a soft spot.¡¯

Zfiri bent to tend to her Father. His fingers were so cold. She took one up and held it to her cheek.

Abed ran a quick scan over the wrist of the green man. The pulse was weak but steady. He put a hand on the blue ladies arm. I got this he seemed to say.

Jan nodded again. Loudly in Spanglish she repeated her words to Julian. ¡°Target the Dragons in the middle of the neck just below the head!¡±

The blue-skinned mage stood up from her concentration on the old man. Her golden eyes seem content with the aid the Medic was giving. As she turned her attention to the looming threat the power of this strange creature who had spoken in her mind staggered her sensations. This Jan had no knowledge of what she could do. Zfiri gestured with her fingers pulling them into tight fists, shaking them with a ferocious intensity. Then she employed the alien spirit with her will.

Jan staggered away from the group towards the incoming threat. Arms held before her she began to moan in true agony. Her head flopped on her shoulders and her knees buckled.?

As her crew raced to secure the injured old man and gain firing positions she could hear the growling flare of the Shriek as it powered up. These outward senses seemed to fail. Sounds faded and sight dimmed.

The pain in her skull made her shudder. Her skin felt as if it were on fire. A rage built in her unlike any before even when she¡¯d performed the sacrifice. Sweat formed on her brow and blood dripped from her mouth as she bit her tongue. What was happening?

The lead Dragon broke the tops of the tree line gliding in casually. They were not aware of the danger that lay ahead. Tracer fire opened immediately on the lead Dragon.?

Jan, now on her knees was crying and shouting in Latin. ¡°Noctis crepusculo incipit illucesceret dies pariunt ignibus gehennae¡±

She repeated the phrase as her head drooped leaden to her chest. The other two Dragons appeared from beyond following the leader.

A beautiful shimmering blue flame appeared around Jan¡¯s body then began to elongate towards the attackers in a wave that rippled like a spiralling heat mirage. It began to pulse and dark flecks appeared within like ash or puffs of smoke.?

In response the lead Dragon breathed its own ruddy flame a gusher of sickening red and black volcanic fire. It took aim at Jan as if she were all that remained of its hate and violence. When the Dragon¡¯s flame hit Jan¡¯s cool blue wave a detonation like a ton of high explosive splashed bright in a circular two-dimensional explosion of expanding gasses. A shock wave from the blast struck everyone.

The Dragon could not stop it¡¯s flight and it bore headfirst into the weirdly two-dimensional exploding circle.

As the Dragon bore through the conflagration it changed color to a sooty black as tendrils of the expanding field smoked grimly from its body. A sound so terrible belched from its fanged mouth. A cry so horrible and full of agony ripped the air. In a sudden unexpected maneuver it plunged straight down and crashed with a monumental crack that shook the earth.

Jan felt the tremor through her knees. She did not see the other two Dragons dance in amazement around the strange circle in the air that was beginning to disperse.?

Then she knew nothing at all as the world went dark and she fell forward on her face.

For a moment that seemed like far far too long, Julian watched¡what?

If flying dragons and multicolored people with horns ·É±ð°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù enough, now crazy blue magic was being thrown about, and he watched as one of the the aforementioned flying dragons bellowed in pain, and fell out of the sky.? Then it was over. The remaining two wheeled, and got some distance, obviously trying to compe to a decsion (¡°Did you see that!?¡±, ¡°Yeah, what do we do?¡±, ¡°We avenge our buddy, what else?¡± seemed to be the conversation happening), before finally wheeling again and beginning to close.? This time, they decided to split the difference. They began to close from separate attack angles.

Zafiri found it all hard to take in.? This one stranger with her, seemed to cast a form of magic she was unfamiliar with.? What were those words? Were they a verbal incantation? She was still deeply concerned about her father, though.? It seemed as though this¡healer knew what he was doing, but the instruments were unfamiliar. If only she could understand them¡

Then she remembered:? She could! It was a simple little spell, too.? She extracted a small slip of paper and a piece of vine charcoal, closed her eyes, and focussed as she used the charcoal stick to inscribe the small sheet.? Satisfied, she folded the paper up small, stuffed it into her mouth, and swallowed. It wasn¡¯t a permanent solution, but it should at least cut down on the communication barrier for a while¡she hoped she did the langauge comprehension runes correctly.

She waited a few moments, and listened¡

¡°°¿°ì²¹²â, here¡¯s what we¡¯re doin,¡± Julian said aloud.? ¡°Shriek crew, aim for the port incoming. Meat, you and your RPG take the starboard.? The rest of you split your rifle fire to cover. Got it?¡±

Shriek?? RPG? The Hidalgo was clearly talking about weapons, but the terms made no sense to her.? Rifles? By the gesture of some of the people, it was clear he was talking about those armed with those strange looking arquebuses.? They looked so small and slender, but her educated eye could catch the fine details that screamed a mastery of mechanical craftsmanship.

At the same time, her attention was diverted back to the healer as he pressed some sort of wand against her father¡¯s exposed arm.? She heard it hiss, and then he spoke, seemingly into the air.

¡°I¡¯ve given him a combo injection of anti-coagulant, beta blockers and nano-surgeons,¡± he said.? ¡°That should take us out of the immediate crisis, but he could really use some bed rest at the hospital.¡±

Anti¡?? What did dirt clods have to do with it?? She understood the words ¡°beta-blockers¡±, but the meaning defied her.? Nano-surgeons? ¡°Nano¡± meant something infinitesmally small, surgeon meant hand work.? Small handworks?

Her attention was riveted back to the dragons, as one bellowed on its way inward.? The Hidalgo¡he was standing there for all to see, like the dragons ·É±ð°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù a threat.? Was he insane?

¡°Steady children,¡± he said.? ¡°Wait for them to come to you.? Meat, get ready.¡±

Zafiri watched as the one called Meat presented something that looked vaguely like an Arquebus, while another opened up a case and pulled out¡she wasn¡¯t sure.? It vaguely resembled a chicken leg, assuming the chicken was immense. One end was bulbous, but it looked like two cones joined at their widest points. Out of one end was a slender bar.? She watched as the object was slid into the not-arquebus bar first, and some sort of pin was pulled out of the front end of the cone. With that done, the one called Meat raised it up¡but he looked like he was holding it wrong.? Why was part of it over his shoulder?

¡°Take the shot when you¡¯re ready,¡± Julian said.? ¡°You¡¯re starting this.¡±

At first, nothing happened.? Meat just calmly pointed his weapon¡ªthe RPG, she reminded herself, at the coming dragon.? Suddenly she jumped as a loud ¡°POP!¡± came from the RPG. The bulbous piece was gone. She jerked her head skyward to the dragon, and covered her mouth to keep herself from shrieking.

The entire front of the dragon¡ªhead down to its shoulders¡ªwas gone.? All that remained were gobbets of meat and loose wings. The only sign it once had a rider was a pair of legs harnessed to what was left of the saddle as the entire mass plummeted, smashing into nearby trees.

What¡kind of¡weapon¡

And then came a sudden thunderous staccato from what was called the Shriek.? What Zafiri didn¡¯t know is that one in every five rounds was a tracer. At 600 rounds per minute, it looked like bolts of lightning were shrieking out of the weapon (perhaps that¡¯s why it¡¯s called what it is, she thought).? Smaller, more numerous staccatos joined in, coming from the ¡°rifles¡± as they were called.

The person manning the Shriek was clearly inexperienced.? He tried aiming for the point suggested, but missed. Even so, he was scoring hits, and the rounds were causing damage.? The dragon let out a pitiable combination of a moan and bellow, as bullets tore into its scales, and some ripped into its left wing as it veered, tearing some of the membrane.

And that dragon didn¡¯t care what its rider wanted.? It wanted out of there. Nothing in its life had hurt like this before, and it didn¡¯t want any more.? The rider wasn¡¯t doing much better. The Shriek had missed him, but two rounds from the rifle fire had bored into his back.? He was losing blood, and it was all he could do to hang on as the dragon erratically flew back the way it came¡

¡°Cease fire,¡± the Hidalgo barked.? He commanded the field like he was born to it.? ¡°Damn! Got away¡¡±

¡°I¡¯m sorry, Jefe¡± said the Shriek operator.? ¡°I wasn¡¯t used to the kick.¡±

¡°Don¡¯t worry,¡± the Hidalgo said.? ¡°What matters is that we¡¯re getting away for now.? Let¡¯s gather up our things and¡ªwhat the hell!?¡±

He finally noticed Jan¡¯s condition.

[OOC: And as Deadpool would say¡"There. All caught up".]

Re: Troy Rising: After the Flash ¡ª Julian, Jan & Company

¡°Children,¡± he said in a low, gravelly voice, ¡°I may not know everything that¡¯s going on, but I know I can¡¯t let this happen during my watch.? We¡¯re moving in.¡±

¡°What¡¯s the plan, jefe?¡± asked one of his people.

¡°Simple:? We take out the trash,¡± he said.? ¡°We go in, and we kill anyone wearing a uniform, unless they¡¯re surrendering, and quite frankly right now I¡¯m almost in a ¡®no prisoners¡¯ mood.

¡°³¢³Ü³¦¾±²¹, you come with us, and keep the drone on ¡®em.? We¡¯ll split into three teams, use the underbrush to our advantage.? Any questions?¡±

Jan had simply faded into the background after Julian got up communications. The new info on the fire was even worse. Hovering in the back she caught enough of the emotion and language to figure out what was going on. Atrocities! It made her blood mad crazy. It was bad enough that she¡¯d had to kill in battle. That was in the past. Back when she¡¯d come upon the corpses of the innocents. Perhaps she¡¯d even caused the deaths of children. Who could tell? All she knew was that war sucked. Was it being thrust on her this time or had she caused this? This was no remote jungle or desert plain. This was Troy, her Mother¡¯s birth place, her own birth place!

Thoughts roiling she turned away from the group hiding her red faced anger. It wouldn¡¯t do to show that sort of emotion here or anywhere. Unprepared for any kind of action she stood her ground. That might not be all true but her talents were wildly untested and unreliable. This command needed her but then all of Troy did as well. As a scout she¡¯d been top notch. As a Ranger she¡¯d been deadly. They didn¡¯t know that and she wasn¡¯t going to volunteer, not without a full load out. Back at the house she had an old 9mm with some ammo and that was it.?

She sighed deeply and turned to watch them go. Doing nothing didn¡¯t calm the fire in her veins that seemed to make her teeth sizzle.? She could feel the heart in her chest bang away like a crazed hydraulic pump. What the hell was going on with her?

Lucia raised her hand.? ¡°Mind if I grab a few extra drones?? I can effectively control up to three and widen our field.¡±

¡°Make it quick,¡± Julian said.? ¡°They can¡¯t wait.¡±

¡°On it.¡±

She went back to her bike, and broke out an extra pair of drones.? She didn¡¯t stop there, though. She got out an extra trio of drones and an extra controller.? Then, as soon as she launched and linked up the new pair, she hurried over to Janet.

¡°Hey¡you wanna help?¡± Lucia asked her.? ¡°You can keep an eye on our six and beyond.¡±

¡°I¡¯d be happy to help, I¡¯m Jan.¡± She raised her hand palm outward in a gesture of greeting.?

She accepted the controller. The controls were basic enough. She flipped on the display and rotated the view. Several small displays indicated altitude, speed and direction. Another smaller display showed the power remaining and the distance available on the remaining battery. They ·É±ð°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù armed as they were much too small but they could get into tiny places that even a small human couldn¡¯t.

The drones launched almost immediately and the two women compared thoughts on deployment and distance.

As she got used to the operation her Neuropsychic abilities kicked in. She explored the array and flited between each of the drones checking for any problems and enhancing any latent efficiencies. Jan felt exuberant with the freedom of movement. It felt as if she were a bird.??

They scouted the area in front of the advancing Nomads careful to check any places where scouts or small forces could hide and attack from surprise.?

As they grew close to the smoking cabin they caught sight of the raiders. They kept their distance not wanting to spook them into flight before the Nomads took them out.

¡°³¢³Ü³¦¾±²¹, pleased to meet you,¡± the latina girl (she couldn¡¯t have been more than 17) said with a grin.? She got on her comm. ¡°Comm check, do you read, jefe?¡±

¡°Five by five,¡± Julian said, well inside the forest.? ¡°Looks like that interference is nearly gone. What¡¯s up in the hot zone?¡±

¡°No change,¡± she made a grimace. ¡°They¡¯re still¡you know.¡±

¡°Copy,¡± he said.? ¡°Keep me updated, we¡¯re closing now.¡±

Indeed, he was close enough to hear it.? The crack of the whip¡the screaming of a young girl, followed by fitful sobs.? The ragged cries of a father. The hoarse moans of an older woman. And all around, the sounds of sadistic laughter, and crueler taunts and barbs.

This ends now, he thought.? His voice just above a whisper to his people.? ¡°Okay¡let¡¯s keep it simple as I said. If they¡¯re wearing one of those uniforms, shoot to kill.? If they¡¯re surrendering¡

¡°Use the woods as cover.? We don¡¯t know how many more of these guys there are, got it?¡±

Everyone nodded, and began to creep forward.

For Julian, it had been a toss-up.? Did he start with the rapists or the guys whipping a girl?? They both turned his stomach. In the end, the decision had been made for him.? Alma, Eva and Maria, all sisters to Lucia, decided to focus on the rapists. So he took aim at the man holding the whip, and¡

The man who had been laughing at his buddy¡¯s work with the whip was suddenly screaming as his buddy¡¯s head exploded.? Nothing subtle about a 9mm round. A moment later, the woods lit up with the sound of gunfire unlike anything the mercenaries had ever heard before.? It wasn¡¯t the thunderous ¡°µþ°¿°¿²Ñ¡± of black powder weapons.? Instead, it was an alien, repetitive ¡°Krak! Krak! Krak!¡± of weapons with an amazing rate of fire, and worse, high accuracy.? One by one, the mercenaries were cut down.

Laughing boy stopped screaming and went for his sword, only to get hit twice in the gut.? He was screaming again.

The two who were questioning and beating the father?? One ran toward the barn and the obvious stack of matchlock guns, only to take three slugs in the back.? The other hesitated too long and caught one in the throat and two more in the chest.

As for the rapists.? The one who was holding down the woman¡¯s arms took a shot in the head, the back of his skull opening up.? He fell to the side. The guy waiting his turn was peppered by an assault rifle on full auto. As for the man caught in the act, he tried disengaging and running for cover, only to trip on his lowered trousers.? He hauled himself up to his knees¡and took a round in his lower guts (that wasn¡¯t where Alma had wanted to hit, but she¡¯d take it for now). He doubled over, screaming his lungs out.

All around, the remaining mercenaries tried to fight back, firing into the woods, but their shots went wild, the closest coming to McCoy, as a large round whizzed to the right of his head.? Three more of the mercenaries went down, before they retreated to the barn, and hopeful cover.

¡°°¿°ì²¹²â, pistoleros like me,¡± he said, gesturing to his own pistol, ¡°let¡¯s move in.? The rest of you keep us covered.¡±

Back on the highway, Lucia and Jan kept an eye on the battle, when Jan¡¯s #3 drone signalled movement in the barn.? Unarmed though they were, the drones were superbly equipped. Millimeter wave radar cut through the wooden structure of the barn, showing not only a trio of three running into the barn, but it also showed six more up on the second level, and it looked like they were getting ready to engage!

¡°Multiple contacts in the barn,¡± Jan buzzed on the com. ¡°Upper and lower.¡±

Jan broke away checking the parameter further to the west and north. Back on com she reported.

?¡°All clear a klick west checking north,¡± Jan said casually. Easy to do when you were on the other side of a joystick. An error cost lives and for that there was no fix.

Sweeping north, the drones spotted a dust cloud, about 5 klicks away.? It probably wouldn¡¯t have been much to make note of except for two factors¡

The first factor was that it was coming from what was obviously a well worn? trail. It might¡¯ve been called a road if you were being polite, but definitely not by modern standards.? It wasn¡¯t even covered in gravel. It was a well worn rut in the dirt cut out through the forest and its breaks that you couldn¡¯t really call it anything else.? It was clear that heavy conveyances and people had travelled along said road/rut for years, perhaps even decades.

Second factor?? It was moving, and their appeared to be one even more distant behind it¡ªcall it two klicks behind the first, or six klicks.? It was currently too far away to get a good bead on either, but given the current signal strength, it¡¯d be possible to get a closer look.

In the meantime, back at? the farm¡

¡°Break!¡± Julian barked.? He diverted right with some of his people¡ªfour in all, while the remaining five broke left.

One of them¡ªMarco, wasn¡¯t exactly fast enough.? There was the thunderous ¡°BOOM¡± of those matchlock rifles.? All of them missed, save for one.? Marco was clipped in the ribs and went down, but not completely out.

¡°FUCK THAT HURT!¡± he yelled.? He seemed more angry than aggrieved.? Julian was thankful for that.

¡°°¿°ì²¹²â, let¡¯s go!¡± he ordered as he went toward the door of the barn.? He yelled back over his shoulder. ¡°COVERING FIRE!¡±

Rifles, semi-auto, full auto and lever action (nomads loved the old reliables), barked back as Julian and his group rushed the open barn doors.? He discovered two people on the ground floor doing the stupid thing: Reloading their matchlocks. The third however was smart; he had thrown aside his matchlock and drawn a short sword.

Julian didn¡¯t waste time.? He drew his combat knife, which was almost a short sword, and got into a classic fighting stance.? The soldier in front of him, a little puzzled, got an angry look on his face and charged, sword first¡like Julian had been hoping.

He used the combat knife to brush aside the sword lunge, and followed up with a fist to the soldier¡¯s face.? He felt the crunch of nose, and watched his opponent stagger, before following up, delivering a painful knee to the soldier¡¯s crotch.

The soldier dropped the sword and started to go down, but not before Julian finished him off with a savage left, which clearly broke the guy¡¯s jaw.? He went down in a heap.

The lot of men up in the hayloft, having decided that the rifle fire was too thick, decided to try and support their buddies downstairs¡only to be gunned down by the rest of Julian¡¯s crew.? It was over.

°¿±¹±ð°ù¡²â±ð²¹³ó¡±ð³æ³¦±ð±è³Ù¡

¡°We need a medic,¡± he called out to the forest line.? ¡°Come on, let¡¯s go!¡±

There was the matter of the peasant farmer and his family.? The girl had lapsed into unconsciousness, and Elian was worried she might go into shock.? The farmer was on his knees, kneeling and crying, probably not sure what Julian and his band of ¡°toughs¡± were going to do.? The farmer¡¯s wife had done the most movement, having rolled herself into a fetal position.

Wherever we are, it seems like hell, Julian thought.? He scowled. Hell, yeah¡I¡¯m just witnessing it. These people are living it.

Jan half listened to the coms while following the path of the drone. She¡¯d had her own loss. She¡¯d had her own self-serving moments of pain, loss and sorrow. On retrospect it pained her how she¡¯d let her own self-pity drive her emotions. Loss is loss, get over it or face the consequences. In this new time saving the world was a real opportunity not wishful thinking.

The drone moved ahead of the dust cloud and settled in the mix of pine and broadleaf trees. She took note of the color. The leaves were changing. Winter was coming. But it was only, had been spring. Jan turned the drone to face north. At least that was the perspective based on the new sun¡¯s position. Telling weather just became a real test of guess work. No more sats to follow jet streams or swirling hurricanes. She faced the road again and felt a lump of something get caught in her throat. What the hell was that??

Something large and lumbering was moving down the road in long strides.?

¡°Eh, Julian, we got dragons.¡±

She turned to Lucia, held up her vid screen, ¡°Tell me I¡¯m not going fucking bananas.¡±

?
