What is a "Quack Surgeon" in 1851.
开云体育Hi All; I had a chuckle when I read today that Thomas Whitehead: b ca 1783 in either Saddleworth (resided here) or Anston, Yorkshire, was listed as a Quack Surgeon.? If I have the correct Thomas in 1841 he was a Butcher.? Being a butcher? I believe is plausible to becoming a surgeon at least in that time-frame.? However, never saw the term Quack used with it.? Nothing comes up in search for "quack surgeon" except references to what I believe is a video game: "Quack Surgeon is a Charisma-based perk in Fallout 76"All thoughts, suggestions welcomed.? HAGUE
Hi Listers,
I am trying to track down David HAGUE b.1788 in Guiseley in either the 1851 census or the 1871 census. I know there are a lot of them around, but his wife was Elizabeth and the was a papermaker. Two of their children were Christiana b. 1807 and John b. 1819 in Guiseley both unmarried. Thanks, Maureen in Oz. |

Is it House Nurse? On Tue, 25 Jun 2024 at 04:32, barry woolner via <barrywoolner=[email protected]> wrote: I have a thirteen year female ancestor on the 1861 census. I am unable to work out what the words are in the rank/profession box.? |
Re: Illegible words in censuys
开云体育Looks like House Nurse.? It possibly meant she was at home looking after younger siblings and/or neighbours children whilst the mothers went out to work.Lesley N Wales On 25/06/2024 01:57, barry woolner via

Re: Illegible words in censuys
Regarding the 'crossing out'.? I'm guessing all occupations will be crossed out on the page.? It will have been for collecting statistics at a later date.

Re: Illegible words in censuys
Perhaps the census taker started to write “housemaid” but crossed it out and wrote Nurse. Possibly a nursemaid to babies or children. Jennifer? On Tue, 25 Jun 2024 at 5:35?PM, Joanna Broad via <jo_broad_nz=[email protected]> wrote: House.? crossed out? |

Thanks Ruth, and to everyone else. You are correct. It didn't occur to me that it would say nurse as she is only 13. Obviously nurse meant something different back then? She is living with her auntie and his family, including young children. I would guess that
maybe she looks after the children? I found a dissertation on-line specifically about domestic nurses in the 19th?century, She states, "The nurse most commonly invoked at this period was one who cared for the family's young children?.

I think it says ‘House Nurse’
There are other examples of children in the 1861 census being given the term nurse and acting as a ‘nanny’ to other children in the family.
