Locked Granite Basin

I took a quick run this morning to Granite Basin Lake. Best birds of the morning were three Townsend's Solitaires. They were singing (short phrase) songs and perched up at tree tips along the base of the mountain, viewed from the inlet side of the lake.

Also of interest was a possible red naped x red-breasted sapsucker in the Willow Grove next to Playa parking area.? This could be the same bird that was there last year perhaps. Not seen well enough this time, but good to look for.

Locked Golden-winged Warbler in Chino Valley

Just the messenger here.? There was a Golden-winged Warbler photographed off of Outer Loop Road in Chino Valley a couple days ago.? It might be good to keep an eye/ear open around areas like Watson Woods in case it's still around.??

Locked Terns

Viewing two Caspian and one Common Tern from the south side of Willow Lake. Birds found by Laura Rhoden. They are resting on the stone island where the pelicans often hang out on the east side of the lake.

Locked Lewis's Woodpecker, south shore Lynx Lake

Around 4:45 PM, I was at the easternmost end of the parking lot at the south shore of Lynx Lake.? A Lewis's Woodpecker flew in, and I had a brief look before it flew north across the inlet and perched.? Dark green back, pink lower belly.? When if flew, I noted its wings were dark both above and below, no wingbars or patches.? Flight pattern was level, not swooping.? It flew back and landed long enough for me to take a few photos, attached, and then flew off and I lost sight of it.? Lots of other activity in the vicinity:? Lesser Goldfinch, Chipping Sparrow, Western Bluebird, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red-naped Sapsucker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Pygmy Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, American Robin.

Locked Re: Recent Arrivals - Willow Lake

Nothing rare but spectacular arrivals overnight with weathert in Sedona - ?Boynton Canyon/Enchantment area: ?red-named sapsuckers, western bluebirds huge flocks of robins, ruby-crowned kinglets - huge numbers of white-throated swifts working through the canyon.? Summer tanagers still here - western tanagers still passing through

Hi Richard,
When I saw your photo of this pigeon, my first thought was of a Torresian Imperial Pigeon.? I saw many in Cairns, Australia (Queensland) three years ago.? ?Upon looking in my Australian field guide, I realized that the eyes,? Bill, and foot color is wrong, as is the uncertain.? Australia was still in my head, so I looked at the other pigeons and doves.? The White-headed Pigeon has has red feet, Bill, and eye--ring that is exactly the same shape as your pigeon.? However, it's wings are entirely black.? All we can see is white on the wings of your bird.? I also saw the White-headed Pigeon ain Australia at O'Reilly''s (inland from and higher elevation than Brisbane).
I think Walt is correct that it is a "domestic" which I interpret to mean "bred for bird cages", and probably of mixed species origin.? ?Additionally,? one of the "mixes" could well be a White-headed Pigeon.
Thanks for sharing, Karen?

Locked Yellow-billed Cuckoo

While not unusual in some parts of Yavapai county, I don't see any eBird records of Yellow-billed Cuckoo for Watson Woods.? This morning I heard and then saw one in a big cottonwood tree in WW not far from where one takes the stairs down into the woods from the parking area off Sundog road.? I only saw the underside of that large, paddle-like tail with the large white spots. It was only making its distinctive call very infrequently.? Also, there continues to be a Chat calling along the Creek south of the wildlife pond.

Thanks Sue for the timely reporting. I was kayaking on Willow Springs lake on the rim above Payson on 5-19-2021 and saw two beautiful and fascinating? shorebirds that I had never seen before.
I checked Merlin on my phone and an outdated bird book in my car but could not identify them.
? I Just got home today and looked up Red-necked phalarope, Same bird . Life Bird for me as well.

Late yesterday afternoon at Willow Lake, there were two flocks of Willets, 35 and 16, as well as two Solitary Sandpipers (so much for solitary!), 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 11 Killdeer, and a Caspian Tern.
