Hello,
Bought this and intended to put the shell on another chassis. It looks unused. Don't know when made, but it has a Montgomery Ward price sticker on the original blue box.
It ran for four feet, made evil noises and stopped. . When I opened it up (these simple locos were easy to take apart), expecting to find the usual front truck metal wheeled, and the rear plastic, rubber tired, with pancake motor, see picture for what I found. What a surprise. I don't know that I ever knew about this conversion. It is obviously a commercial kit.
What stopped it from running was that the idler gears had cracked apart, also the axle gears are intact, but cracked
Anyway, I'd like to preserve it. Can anyone steer me to replacement idler gears and geared axle/wheel sets?
I have added and album: Life-Like F7, because I can't seem to get pictures in any other way.
Denis
PS: Remember to save your comment, otherwise this Yahoo program will wipe out your topic, should you leave that page, even to go to another place on this forum.?

Dennis, This was the first drive for the LL F7 before the pancake drive came along, so this is not an after-market kit. Pancake drives became all the rage circa 1975 after Tyco got the bright idea to put a slot car motor in a diesel truck, then Bachmann & LL followed suit.
I believe this is from the early 70's, and split gears on them are common.

Hello Walter, Assuming you are responding to the Yardbird email, go to the bottom of the page, beyond all comments.? Look for "2 New Photos", and click on that. As I said, I had to put the pictures in an 'Album', in order to get them on the site.? You would find them there, also, alphabetically arranged at about the fourth page. Denis ?

They called that the Uni- Drive. This is a L/L ad from 1977.
?There was a GP38 with the same drive also. I don't know if it was sold under the L/L name or if it was sold under the Model Power name.
?NWSL had a regear kit listed at one time for a Model Power GP38.
I wonder if those may be the gears for this style drive?

Hello Nelson J3a, Ray, Emmett, Thanks for the identification of the drive. I believe there is a Life-Like forum, I'll look there for info. Denis ? "Wishing you clear skies and a smooth trail. Vaya con Dios." ?

Denis, thanks. Sorry to have been a pest.
The advantage of the Albums is that you can jump from photo to photo and enlarge them too. The Files are not as flexible.?
The Attachments to the Messages handle the photos very much like the Albums, but from time to time Yahoo seems to lose some attachments (i.e.., not all get sent to the recipients).
Regards, Walter

You were not being a pest. I believe I started off incorrectly trying to attach. And, as you mentioned, I have found that some Yahoo groups will not allow attachments. I prefer using attachments though, when showing pictures of, what I consider a subject having only transient value. Regards. Denis

Hi guys. Just a couple of points. ? First the photos section is mighty much huge as compared to the files section. Several groups I belong to have had to ask members to transfer their photos from the files section to the photos area as the files were nearing capacity. Those that didn’t move them often had them just plain dumped. Files are more for articles and such and, yes, there may be photos as part of that. But for just plain photos please use the photos section. ? Also, whether or not a particular group allows attachments is up to the groups owner/moderator(s). Yahoo does make the attachments option available but takes no part in its usage. ? John Hagen ?

I found this video of someone doing modifications to a LL GP38, but you can see through his editorial text that it has a Mabuchi can motor with a shaft running to a gear tower. Maybe the NWSL gearing was for these? Is this the current version of these locos?
The mystery continues...

Nelson,
?I have never seen the drive shown in that video. It may be a newer drive. ?One of the GP38-2 drives I have uses the same components as the L/L F7 mentioned. The others I have use the pancake motor truck.
