Nelson,

Not certain, but there may be some Mantua there. ?The drivers look like Belle of the 80's. ?Are you the buyer? ?If the drivers measure 72" then likely Belle.

Re: Historical Question

I frankly think that Varney might have given Mantua a run for the money back in those days.? There were LOTS of Old Ladys and and Casey Jones models out there, not to mention the Little Joes.? Also in the mix (but I'd venture to put them in third place) was MDC/Roudhouse.? Athearn's steam offerings were slim (the Little Monster, USRA 0-6-0, and B&M Pacific) and didn't last very long.

I was just curious - was Mantua / Tyco the most prolific manufacturer of HO scale steam engines? I realize they were around the longest (40's to 90's) I was thinking of the "golden age" of the 50's and 60's.

At the rate we've been going we might hit 106 here, too, except it would be 106 inches of rain in the past month. ;-)

The photo you posted about is a PRR H6sb.? Late in life (circa the 1940s), some surviving H6sb engines got power reverses which shoved the right hand air tank onto the pilot deck.??

I have a copy of Edson's PRR All-Time Steam Roster.? Page 319 has information about H6sb 2898.? The engine was built by Baldwin, construction number 26820, in November 1905.? the engine was superheated in August 1914 and sold for scrap in April 1950, making it one of PRR's longer-lived H6sb engines.

Happily, PRR H6sb 2846 is still with us at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

To the best of my knowledge, none of PRRs H8/H9s/H10s consolidations (along the lines of Bowser's H9s kit) got pilot mounted air tanks.
?
As far as modeling the engine in HO scale, I'm not aware of any good kitbashes, in part because of the engine's 56" drivers.

In brass, Lambert, Sunset, and Railworks imported models of the engines.? After careful budgeting, I have one of the Lambert models and one of the Railworks models.

Good tip ? I always had bleed through issues . Anyone ? Henry

If your LHS can get it for you, I highly recommend Tamiya masking tape.
Its about 2 bucks a roll (6mm x 18m) and I've had minimal to zero bleed
with it. It also bends nicely if your stripe needs to curve. I still use
the blue painters tape for large areas, just the Tamiya for the edges.
Try it, you'll like it! [;)]

Paul, thanks for the tip.

Here's the rest, I masked off the red and then painted the black, I
gave it
a couple of sprays over the course of a warm day. I think it turned
out
pretty well, for my first time doing this. Although, next time I am
going
to use blue, green masking tape because there was a bit of bleed-under
when
I did the red.

But, I have two more E units to paint up Amtrak, so I'll have a chance
to
apply what I learned from this one. I also have some E7's that I need
to
figure out what to do with, as well as about a layout's worth of track
to
spray paint brown before I can start on the yard for it. I can send
pictures for that too if anyone's interested.

I'm having fun for sure!

Better results to use gloss coat for decals then dull coat for even

I'm making my E8's finally. This is how I usually go, I spend

a project on the back burner in my head then I knock it out.

This is a Model Power E8, which started life as BN 9908 (a
fictitious
number, bless them) but I am making it into Amtrak 330.

First, I used Wash-away paint remover to get rid of the Cascade
green,
which actually went pretty quickly. I used a toothbrush to clean
paint
out
of the crevices, then I washed the model with dish soap and let it
sit
for
a few days.

Next, I sprayed it with Testor's silver spray paint. I let it sit
for a
while and then hit it again. Then, I masked the sides off and
sprayed the
red nose, waiting a while between first and second doses. I let
that dry
overnight last night and masked the red off and this morning I
sprayed
black (don't have a photo yet). This afternoon when I get home
I'll hit
it
along a couple spots I can already see I missed, I wanted to let
what was
there dry to avoid runs.

I'll probably pick up a can of dullcote and hit it with that once
the
paint
has set a day, then on to decals!

Hope you enjoy what I have so far
