Going back a long, long way in the memory banks here:
When they got the bigger engines, to avoid having to rebuild the table and pit, they had a jack for the rear set(s) of wheels on the tender.
You'd never be able to get the lead trucks in the air with the equalized weight they support, again, if I recall.

If memory serves me right there was a "block" placed under the lead truck to raise it enough to allow the TT to turn. Might be a photo of this someplace if one wishes to look.
