I may have gone slightly insane in the quest to repower a couple of these things. I acquired a 3D printer back in May or so, and I have just finished designing gearboxes to accept Athearn gears and axles. This is a work in progress, but I wanted to show the Group.
This is the rough draft, mainly to test gear mesh and clearances. The good ol' Athearn gears slip nicely onto 1/8 OD brass tube, which is what I will use for gear bearings. Outside bearings will be made of (probably) etched sheet brass. The same number of gears that an SD40 has will set me up, which will also probably donate its motor. Thank goodness for the swap meets.
