Rust

The keybed is rusted in places and I want to repaint it but the black plastic on the keybed doesn't seem to be removable, how do they mount it on? Do you have any experience with this? Does your dx7 have any rusty spots inside?

Just my @0.02USD ...

I would be inclined to leave well enough alone.? Given the age of the synth (~40 years), I would be amazed if it *didn't* have a small amount of rust somewhere.? And what I see in your photo is definitely a *small* amount of rust.? I don't know how the plastic is attached, but it wouldn't surprise me if adhesive was used.? Yamaha build quality in the 1980s was excellent, so I would expect them to use plenty of adhesive.? 40-year-old adhesive is very hard to remove:? solvents often have little or no effect, and scraping/grinding it off rarely results in a clean surface.? So, any repainting you do a) may look as bad or worse than your photo; and b) may actually protect the metal less than the original finish.

Rust is iron/steel's way of preventing further corrosion.? A small amount of it, while not perfect, is far from a terrible thing.

My two cents : rust is not a protection for steel / iron (it's only the case for aluminium and copper)

Steel rust is not protective as it is permeable (oxyde on copper and aluminium is not permeable, that's why it protects them)

So water passes through rust and attack deeper metal, which rusts in turn, etc etc (look at the Titanic if you don't believe me ?)

In other terms, it is always better to put a protection layer on steel. One of the best I know to stop corrosion is Rustol Owatrol
