FM Heaven?

j.gray

I've heard of a VSTinstrument called FM Heaven which is supposed to be an emulation of the DX7 + friends. Has anyone had a chance to play with this to stack its sound up against the real thing? I know that emulations are never perfect but any specific quirks or missing features?

I don't have it, but it's supposed to be pretty good. One I have
used is on Virtual Sampler, which has it's own DX emulation. That
one is nearly spot on - there is a Feedback issue; turn it down if
it's too much, the it's fine. I use this for previewing patches
before I spent half an hour programming them in (no MIDI!)

If you get FM Heaven, let us know how it is.

I have an older version of that prog.. it is called CES synth (i can't remember the number I thinks it's 7), it sounds pretty
good.. i much prefer the real thing if i can get it.. It sounds a lot like my DX7 but i like the physicality of my DX7 much
better.. and there is something about the real sound... But the software is pretty good.

Hi,

I tried FMHeaven, I find it doesn't sound completely like a real DX7 yet,
even so you can import DX7 Sysex files, but comes close and don't need much
processing power. Also fine is the matrix to create own algorithms, that way
even feedback for every operator is possible. What's missing so far is the
pitch envelope and rate scaling. I emailed the programmer (provided him with
tx81z waveforms) a new expanded version is already planed...

Part of his mail...

---------------

The current features in the new (1.2) release of
FMHeaven include:

Rate Scaling control as on the DX7 - this allows the attacks of string
sounds to be programmed much more easily.

Oscillator sync control - now allows sync to be turned off.

Unison mode - user selectable number of voices per note, plus control over
the degree of detuning of the voices and stereo placement.

Additional controller support such as overall modulation control - this can
be used like the cutoff frequency controller to 'brighten' a sound by
generating more high frequency harmonics. Can be quite effective.

Planned features (maybe in 1.2):

Additional oscillator waveforms - I had a play with additional waveforms
with existing patches and got some great digital noises. Lots of distortion,
but with an excellent in your face sound breaking through. I am trying to
work out what would be sensible waveforms to include, hence the interest in
the Tx81z waveforms. I am planning on including sine, sine + odd harmonics,
sine + even harmonics settings with a couple of soft and maybe an extreme
example of each. So this is square and saw type patterns.
