new, hello 13
Hi FT-847 fans!! This is Carl, KO4SSA. I just purchased a used 847 on eBay, from Japan. I¡¯m wondering how to modify for US bands. As delivered only TX 144-146 and 430-440. I¡¯ve searched high and low on the the web, including Colin, G1IVG¡¯s page, and emailed him!! Haven¡¯t heard back. I¡¯ve tried several solder joint configurations and will not TX on 146.52 or 445000. About to give up. Is the Japan stuff transmit range burned into EPROM or something???? Colin lists several HF coverage configurations and I am able to transmit on 14.550!! (into dummy load of course) I point out as evidence that changing the solder jumpers did do SOMETHING. Also, initially the cross-band repeater item was not available on the menu and now it appeared. More evidence that changing the jumpers did something. Thanks Carl

UHF TX issue 3
Hi Max, OK you need to check J3006 TX I.F., and J3007 TX LO, they are common to VHF and UHF, The LO is the bit that changes frequency, check it does and the level is the same on VHF and UHF, if all good then Q3002 is looking suspect. Not sure of the actual frequencies, or if the LO is higher than the IF or lower, The IF can be 1.8 to 30MHZ, no idea what frequency is used for VHF and UHF say 15MHz, then then the LO would be 425 MHz for 440 MHz 73 Andrew

Russ, This is W5KKQ , Dan Daniels I am ok in QRZ I saw the Ft847 groups I/O page. I have an FT847es for sale. I have Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration in both eyes. My right eye is almost blind.I cannot read the dials on the FT847es. So I had switch to a Flex 5000a so I have a 32" screen. I bought it from a neighbor, KT5U, he bought it new. I have the original box, and packing that came with it. The push button mike that came with it, and the 12VDC power cable that came with it. I have a programing cable that goes with it. It is clean and the box is still in great shape. I am asking $750.00. If you will allow m to post on the FT847 Groups I/O page or if you post it for me. This is a special radio. I live near Dallas and looking for some hams interested in AMSAT. Thanks, Russ for reading this email. Schematics? 85
Looking for a good set of schematics with voltage references. My 847 has no output on UHF band, known to me when I purchased it. I'm aware of the issue with the leads on the UHF module losing contact, but I checked that and resoldered just to be sure but did not resolve the problem. Time to start looking elsewhere. All suggestions on what to check next are welcome. Thank you Max

Talk back or moni
Greetings, I was wondering and it is possible the question has been asked and answered, so I am sorry then. The FT 847 moni feature for SSB is nice. Is there a way to enable this feature for AM and FM as well so one can monitor his modulation? I had a issue a while ago that I thought was the radio but ended up being the desktop microphone. I was even thinking of seeing if a external modulation meter could be used. Thank you. 73' Mark KC3TNO

Couple of questions 30
Hello to the group, Just took delivery of an 847. Great radio. I'm just in the process of getting everything hooked up, CAT, digital modes etc. I plugged my signal lines into the DATA in/out jack and for some reason the radio goes into TX mode. Have to look into that. Question # 1: Can I use the PACKET jack for digital modes such as FT8 or AFSK RTTY? Or is it strictly for packet operation? I'm trying to get into the service menu to align the shift control as it sits at about 1 o'clock when both USB and LSB have the same tone. I've tried the UP/DWN/FAST on the mic while turning on the radio but the regular display just keeps coming up. The up and down buttons are working fine on the mic, but when I press the fast button, the FAST icon does not appear on the screen. Possibly a bad wire inside the mic?? Should the FAST icon come on when activating it from the mic? Everything else appears to be fine, showing full power on HF, 6 and 2m. My 440 antenna has a PL259 on cable, working on getting an adapter! Any pointers appreciated. Thank you, Max VE3TMT

Third harmonic problem?
Don't know if every radio ever made has the same 'feature' but... Tried to contact the ISS during field day Uplink 145.990 FM Downlink came out to around 437.962.3 FM clear receive signal. As soon as I hit TX the receive signal display goes full scale and all incoming audio is blocked out...and in some cases an audible feedback was heard. This was replicated with the radio transmitting into a dummy load with no antenna on the receive side and RF power turned all the way down. it is somewhere around a 20khz range where it feeds back, then drops off to quiet beyond that. We have two radios of similar age and they both do the same thing on that frequency pair. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Is there some setting wrong on our radios? Is there some filter that needs to be replaced? Like I said this was during FD, and other locations were able to contact the ISS with apparently no problem...we didn't have this issue on any other satellite- FM or Transponder. Mike KF5DEY

My FT-847 won't transmit on 80m 14
I have an 847 that I use almost exclusively for VHF/UHF week signal work and for satellites but it got pressed into service for our local club's Field Day this last weekend. It performed perfectly on 10, 15, 20, and 40 but when trying to transmit on 80 meters the display reads "ERROR". This happens whether the radio is set for CW, SSB, AM or FM and it doesn't seem to matter is PTT is asserted via the DATA IN or PKT connectors, the footswitch connector, or the front panel mic connector. Again, only 80m is effected. I know from reviewing the manual that the radio will display ERROR if one tries to transmit out of band but I was testing on 3.850 MHz. Has anyone seen this before and if so what's the resolution? Thanks de K?EKL

Using FT-847 as an oscillator for practice 10
Hello, I will be learning Morse code and would like to use the FT-847 for practice as an oscillator before going live some day. How do I use the radio as an oscillator without going over the air? Thanks, Steven/kc3dow.

Strange black band, but not a defective display 3
Strange situation om my 847 . I've a black semicircle band over the satellite write over the display, mybe is not a defective display, or at least seems. Seeing through the glass with a lamp and a lens I was able to see that the satellite tacking sign is still present. Question: Someone has disassembled the frontal and has idea on what could be, it seems a black tape. 73 de In3aqk

FT-847 CAT Control Problem 15
Greetings All While I am trying to get my 847 setup for digital operations such as FT8, I have come across a CAT control problem. My rig is from 1990, serial 0M45xxxx so it shouldn't have any difficulties. I tried a CPU reset with no change. I can get the FT847UNI drivers working in JTDX, but not the Bi-Directional driver. While this might be the bare minimum necessary for digital operation, I would like to get the OmniRig drivers working so that I can get my logging program (Log4OMv2) working alongside another app to follow the freq. I know there is a HamLib option in Log4OM, but I can't get that to work (it is native in JTDX) so I am wondering... Is there anyone who has their 847 working with bi-directional CAT control? If so, what cables are you using with what software? Micky K1XH

USB OK, LSB narrow/pinched TX audio 6
Good evening! I have an FT-847 that I have had a good while and only used it on VHF (6 and 2 meters mostly, some satellite). The transmit audio sounds FB on upper sideband, but on lower, (75 meters) it sounds terrible. I have tried to see how to validate the carrier frequency for LSB, but not finding a setting or trimmer that affects the frequency in any way on either sideband. Any suggestions? Thanks Victor

To TX on SSB any Frequency FM works fine 6
My basic problem is I seem to have lost Mic audio after Q1053 there is nothing coming out of Pin 4. Pin 4 travels half way around the radio and ends up at Q1038 Pin 6. Q1053 is an electronic attenuator controlled by Pin 3, this does move up and down with the mic gain control. If I switch the monitor on I hear my Mic audio coming out the speaker, so this obviously takes another path. Not sure where. There are no voltages or waveforms on the technical supplement, so I have no of knowing what is normal. The output of IC Q1063 ends up on Pin 12 on IC 1C1081 (switch) which in accessible on the top side of the AF board. The Voltage levels on Q1053 would also be useful, if you can get there and measure them. Is there any way anyone could scope a working model and let me know if audio is getting through and roughly the levels? This way I know roughly where my fault lies? 73 Andrew G8UUG

Yaesu FC-20 repair
Dear Owners, took delivery of the parts on Saturday and took some time out to fit them today and can report after gutting all the burnt carbon and working the board. New components are in and following Andrews advice set TC1001 to null while checking the other test points. SWR is 1.02:1 on nearly all bands into a Comet H422 at 3 meters (my test antenna). Working well. Thanks to everyone who participated and hope I can return the favour in the future. See the repair which was challenging and used non conductive glue to stick down the core and prevent it moving. Before After I know the board still looks burned but it¡¯s back to good FR4 I assure you. The photo doesn¡¯t do it justice. 73 and hope to catch you all in my log soon. Yaesu FC20 13
Hi, a strange question. I had been given an FC20 many years ago by a ham now sadly SK and it seems to have had a mini melt down. Inside near the control port there¡¯s a sensing inductor and the surrounding parts have burned out. As it¡¯s on the input I can only assume it¡¯s been driven with excessive power somehow or some other issue. There is a 20pf trimmer and on the schematic it claims to be Null adjust. I believe it¡¯s in the VSWR forward and VSWR reverse sampling however it¡¯s on the transceiver side so I¡¯m trying to get my head around why the parts burned out. It seems a resistor 27ohm took the brunt but melted TC1001 in the process and much of the PCB tracks. I¡¯m replacing all surrounding components regardless as they amount to pennies but can anyone clarify what null adjust as I can only assume it¡¯s a reference to 50ohm and FSD on reverse.? As it¡¯s coupled to TP1008 a test point I assume one hooks up equipment here to adjust null. If anyone has a service manual about as I¡¯m not sure one was ever issued. Any information on what null adjust is would be helpful if it¡¯s in the service manual. Many thanks in advanced, De Spence M0STO Sent while portable! please excuse typos.

CAT - Control - Yet another post 8
Hi, I have been trying to connect my FT-847 to my RigPi. After a few unsuccessful attempts (many), I then tried to use flrig via a USB (CH340), CAT-847, FTBCAT and FTBASICMMO. In some cases, the 'CAT' symbol appeared on the rig, but the radio failed to connect. I've read the posts on the serial number saga and unfortunately my serial number is 4M950027. Anyway, while trying out the programs above, I found something called CommsTester and this allowed me to 'see' the incoming data while tuning the rig. This is what is see: CommTest Version 1.1.8 Received FF00 on COM 5 Received 20FE00 on COM 5 Received 20FA00 on COM 5 Received 20FE00 on COM 5 Received 20FA00 on COM 5 Received 20F600 on COM 5 Received 20F200 on COM 5 Received 20EE00 on COM 5 Received 20EA00 on COM 5 Received 20E600 on COM 5 Received 20E200 on COM 5 I haven't been able to decode the data yet, but would this kind of patch work? See https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~timc/e/ft847/ See: Mon Jun 9 23:09:52 CDT 2014 [CC-USB232 ] Yaesu have just mentioned that they do not support the firmware update at present. Are there any other avenues open for me? Many thanks Ravi
