June star party
Hello all, The June star party is about 5 weeks away, and I am looking forward to another great event. If you haven't already registered, please consider doing so soon. If you can't make it, please consider spreading the word to keep supporting this party. As many of you know, very little is free in this world, and that Includes this party. Without your help, it won't be easy to continue my efforts for very long. I have long dreamed of a dark site convenient to this area, so please consider helping. Thank you! Phil PS.. please share if you can't make it, and why. I would love to continue with this party as long as I live, but that depends on the support I get. I can't read minds, and the truth is greatly valued. Phil

YCSP UPDATE LETTER.. please consider sharing
Hello all, attached might be a copy of this letter. If not, here it is: YORK COUNTY STAR PARTIES 2023 DATES: JUNE 14-18 and SEPTEMBER 13-17 (Both from Wedsday to Sunday noon) Location: Susquehannock State Park, Drumore, PA, since 2019 www.yorkcountystarparty.org All links and info is posted on this website, including directions and GPS info. PLEASE VISIT. This party is in one of the darkest star party sites on the East Coast, closest and accessable to many mid-atlantic cities. With the cooperation of the Pennsylvania State Parks and their staff, this park boasts the darkest site I¡¯ve ever held or helped at parties, since my first star party in 1994. Two large observing fields are surrounded by Amish tobacco farms with very little light polution. They can handle a dozen large-to midsize motorhomes and to up to 100 tent sites, all within easy walking distance to all activities and facilities, which are between the two observing fields. There are tall pine trees that, on clear nighs block almost all sky domes. Sites allow parking next to your campsite and equipment. With care and plannng, we have not seen mud or damage to the field, nor puddles or lakes form on it, even after 2¡± of rain. NOTE: ALL WHITE LIGHTS WILL BE COVERED WITH RED FILTERS for the duration of the events, including lights inside the mens and ladies rooms. Amenities include FLUSH TOILETS, a pavilion for talks, potable water near the pavilion, some electric available for charging, and a dumpster, and plastic bags for cleaning up after fido. There is also a badmitten net, a softball field, and a childrens playground, and some BBQ grills. Hot showers are avilable for $3 at the ajoining Muddy Run Park camping area, as well as a food concession. I will try to provide an on-site shower tent. This is a beautiful park, with many walking trails, dogs are allowed (leashes and cleanup are required), an overlook to the Susquehanna River, with mounted binoculars, and birds of all kinds frequently visible, including American Bald Eagles. Please read ALL park rules before coming, they are all common sense (only use local firewood, no firearms or alchohol, for example). PRICES, ****INCLUDES CAMPING FOR ENTIRE EVENT****: $40 per ADULT (17 and over) (under 17 accompanied by adults are FREE). $25 over 17 with current student ID $60 PER COUPLE APPROXIMATE DISTANCE FROM: 10-15 miles south of Lancaster, PA (and all the tourist attractions. 5 miles to a Funtime movie theater) 30 miles from York, 45 miles from Harrisburg 40 miles from Blatimore 70 miles from DC 80 miles west of Philly 170 miles from NYC 230 miles from Pittsburgh FOUR HOURS SOUTH OF CHERRY SPRINGS STATE PARK Please Share this with friends, clubs, astro calendars, and any others. Space is limited. THANK YOU! ...Phil Sent from Mail for Windows

2023 YCSP

Hello everyone! And thanks to the early birds who have registered already! I've been involved helping or running some version of this star party since my first party in 1994, through recessions, high fuel prices, bad weather, club politics, and managed to make it through Covid, and I didn't even mention my own personal stuff (and I won't), but one of the most rewarding things is I get to see the support many of you have given to this event year after year, and newbies learning what a star party is, That support, and the fun I see people having behind the eyepiece or the camera on a clear night, gives me the ambition to keep this party going. I'd like to do more, though. I retired last August, and I am going to be spending more time to put more things on the agenda. This is a smaller party venue than the 325 attendees I saw from the mid-'90s to the early 2000's, but we don't need that many to do something with this party. And frankly, that was a lot of work. This size is a lot more fun for many people, including me. First, I plan on having speakers this year. I have been purchasing equipment and learning how to maximize daytime speaking events in the pavilion. If you can do a short talk that would interest our attendees, please contact me ASAP and let me know. Could be about anything astronomy, or perhaps another general interest topic about camping or solar power for field trips. Second, I would like to increase attendance consistently so I can approach food venders with a venue that they won't go broke at. They may be here to have fun, but they can't donate food or throw it away. So far we have only approached around 50% of full capacity at this site, and only twice. My guess is that we need about 70% or more to have vendors take the risk. Otherwise, and until then, planning on cooking your own meals and patronizing the closest establishments will continue to be your best choices. Third, the state requires a small games of chance license from Lancaster County for a raffle, and I could look into that. However, vendors used to donate awesome prizes to parties, but they have stopped a lot of that. Until then, though, we can have a swap meet, which I will encourage this year. I used to sell in advance t-shirts, caps, golf shirts, sweatshirts, and even fanny packs, which people liked, but printers need a minimum order every year, and I can't afford to stock multiple sizes and colors. Until now I couldn't even think about the time involved. That might also take a volunteer to handle the ordering and delivery. And did I mention there were contests? Not sure if we'll ever have enough attendees for some of that. This will require some help from all of you. What I ask is this: If you can attend, please do so. This isn't free here, and the expenses need to be covered. I've invested in equipment including a SHOWER TENT that I plan to put up for use at every future party. I'm still trying to figure out the hot water and waste capture, but it's a work in progress. The next thing is to please help spread the word by email and newsletters to your friends, clubs, and through astro calendars you know of (please send me the links and I'll submit the info). This is my next project... we are only 3 months from the June Party! And let's not forget September's party. I will be considering suggestions for alternate dates for 2024 due to summer holidays, which are not acceptable for the state because of their prime season, and possibly using last quarter weekends when possible. I would like to get input from a future email on this topic. Well, that covers most things for now. Please stay tuned, I, along with some help, will be updating the YCSP website, this .io group site, META (facebook), as well as the web calendars ASAP. I want to hit the ground running for June's party. Thanks everyone! I can't do this without all of you! Phil

Hi All, In case you missed the DART mission impacting the asteroid this evening, here is a link to the YouTube video which shows the impact. The last 3 minutes are worth watching. "Are you a still taking in registrations for the star party? I am planning to bring my family for Saturday night? Do you events planned on Saturday and Sunday?" NOTE: weather forecast was simple this morning: Wednesday: COMFY Thursday: COMFY Friday: COMFY Saturday: COMFY Cleatr nights are also forecast! ------------------------------- Answers: Yes, the registration page is staying open. We are less than half full, there's room for a lot more attendees. This event is close enough for many to make a quick trip to join the party! I usually get text notices almost immediately (I hope!). Registration includes admission and overnight camping for 1 to 4 nights, your choice of how long you can attend. The events or activities planned this time are socializing, informal talks Saturday, and hopefully excellent camping and observing. Excellent park activities are walking trails and bird watching are available. Sunday is departure day, with a 3pm end time and deadline to vacate the ballfield. You could stay until dusk by moving to the parking lot across the road. I had planned more activities, but requirements to retire and close out my business practice consumed the last couple of months. Good news is I've got more time to plan 2023 parties, which includes scheduling speakers and talks. ----------- I'll take a moment now to thank everyone attending and helping to establish this new party and location over the last 3 years (2020 doesnt count). There's been a lot of interest in it, and I ask everyone that can to please share the camping, park, and observing experience with others, and if you write a review or take photos, please share them with me for possible use on the website. As attendance grows, I hope to interest a food vendor to be on site. We're still too small for that to happen, but I'm looking. Thank you all for attending, and supporting my efforts! Phil

September 16 UPDATE

YORK COUNTY STAR PARTY UPDATE UPDATE: September 16, 2022 Patrty dates: September 21-25 2022 NOTE: The 10 day forecast shows great weather through the duration of the York County Star Party... I can only hope! ....Phil I've been searching since 1995 for a really nice DARK location, accessible to mid-atlantic astronomers, when the regional PA STATE PARKS office suggested Susquehannock State Park in 2019. With an awesome camping site with good horizons, beautiful trails, pets allowed, amenities, modern flush toilets, a dumpster, potable water and electric available, and now, NO WHITE LIGHTING from local fixtures or neighbors during the event, this is now the official location! I've added a 2-room shower tent, generator, the red filters, and a lot of time (and now newly retired!), I now see a long future possible here, and WITH YOUR SUPPORT, I can start adding other features for future parties! Camping is included in registration fees, and for most people, less gas is needed to get here than other star parties. While we are limited to around 110 attendees, attendance at this, the 5th party here, has plenty of room left. With consistent attendance I am hoping to arrange for a food vendor in the future. They can reach this location easily, and if they know they can break even, they might take a chance on us. Hope you decide to attend and support this party! If not now, perhaps in the future. Please consider helping by spreading the word to your clubs and friends, and sharing reviews online and with me. It is only with your support that this event will not only survive, but grow! Thank you everyone for your support! Phil

September party next month
4
Hello all! I hope everyone is well, and looking forward to cooler weather next month. I would like to remind you that next month¡¯s party is September 21-25, with the new moon on the 25th. If you can attend or support this event, or at least promote it with your friends, clubs, or any interested parties, my goal is simple: If I can have a consistent attendance around 50+ people, it would be a lot easier to have a food vender agree to be available for us at the party. They need to justify a profit more than I need to¡ but it would be nice if I could, too. We have a unique site here.. dark, with many conveniences, a great camping site and parking lot, and park supervisor that has allowed me to cover all white lights with red filters, making this very friendly to our night vision. No place is perfect on the East coast, especially as close and convenient to the big cities, but this comes pretty darn close. I am retiring this month, have been prepping for it since the beginning of this year. I have dates for 2023 picked to seek approval from the State Parks people. I want to continue to focus on making this party successful, and would like your help. Your good will, referrals, and spreading the word have always been appreciated, and can and will make a huge difference in all future events, and will help secure this event¡¯s future. If you haven¡¯t been here, it¡¯s the best site I¡¯ve managed since the 1995 Mason Dixon Star Party, and I want to keep this going during my retirement, and beyond. Everyone, please consider joining us here and help make this THE place to go for convenience near the big cities. I CAN¡¯T exceed 100 attendees on the ballfield at this point, and there is some room for larger campers and RVs nearby with a very good sky as well. Thank you for your time and good will. Looking forward to seeing many of you next month, Phil
