Happy Memorial Day 2021

Hello all,?
I am just taking a moment here to remember our military, and many of my relatives who were and are in the military, through different wars, as well as times of peace.? They and their families have, and are, making huge sacrifices to enable the rest of us to live the lives we choose, and to protect us from those who would take advantage of us.? I wish all of you a safe return.
In a perfect world, we might not need them.? But to be on the safe side, we wouldn't know that until we did.? The latest news about UFOs also comes to mind, as well as many of the sci-fi movies that dwell on invaders from other worlds.
Unfortunately, we have enough of our own invaders on this planet.? Perhaps one day the world will become one, as the 3rd and current Covid is starting to force the issue of international cooperation.? My condolences to all those who have suffered and suffering losses during this pandemic.
In the meantime, the weather has decided to give us a break from the cooler temperatures and catching up on the much-needed rainfall, and now we can give thanks for today's sunshine and warmer temps.? I hope all of you can get out and enjoy the BBQs, beaches and outdoor activities with your loved ones, and have a safe holiday.
Have a Happy Memorial Day!
Phil

Register for October Star Party - Day Guest Only

I¡¯m a newer (<1 year) member of the Chester County Astronomical Society. Don Knabb sent us information on the September & October Star Parties your group is hosting. Since I¡¯m just learning how to use a telescope it would be great to participate in these events to expand my network and to learn from seasoned astronomers. However, my wife Pam won¡¯t camp so I¡¯ll be day tripping. How do I register and make payment for the October star party? Please advise.

Thanks for hosting!

Please check the website first at for answers to most questions.? I will update and provide answers on that website?to any questions that are asked.

ABOUT GRILLS:? there are some BBQ grills in the area, and grills are allowed.? what isn't allowed are ground fires.

CAMPERS:? most single axle campers under about 1800 pounds or so will be allowed, depending on weight.? i will be providing more details as i work with the officials to nail down exactly what their definitions are.? in the past they ruled double axle campers were to go in the RV lot, without discussion.? the issue is damage to the turf.? If it gets wet, we can't have ruts or damage.?

More details soon...

Phil,

Since my registration got cut short and I did not get to complete the registration, I wanted to tell you what I planned.

I have a 5x8 trailer, tent and popup cover for shade.? My wife uses the trailer as a sleeping platform.??

Also, will the use of a camp stove be OK.

Regards,

Charlie

Hello everyone!
I've been holding my breath (and wearing a mask) for what seems like forever, deciding when it might be safe enough to restart this party.? Well, it seems that time has arrived!
The dates ARE:

September 8-12, 2021
****AND****
October 6-11, 2021

The best place to get updated info will be (soon, after it gets updated this week):

Please share this info with astro clubs and friends.??

The PA State Parks are on board, the reservations have been paid for, and Andy, owner of the Busy Bee food vendor, has committed to both dates.

Registrations are expected to be opened by the end of May.? Once opened, the registrations will be limited to 100 vehicles for the field, plus the lot space for RVs and heavy campers, so it is important that if you plan to ride together, please register together, or include carshare info on your registration, to allow as many people as possible to participate for each party.? You MUST indicate what you are using for camping. This will be spelled out on the website.

Please, everyone, we must have a safe event.? I will be adding an NEWS AND UPDATES PAGE after the first party page to keep everyone informed as we get closer to the parties.? Please plan on visiting this page occasionally, as it will help you learn what's new.
THAT'S IT FOR NOW!? Be safe everyone,? Have a great summer!? I look forward to seeing you at the parties!
Phil

I registered successfully for October, paid with a credit card through PayPal, not a PayPal account. It went through fine and I received a confirmation email from PayPal.

Keep looking up!

Hello, Don, Jeremy, and all..
As of 2 minutes ago, the registration page is ready and live.?
?
I¡¯ll be updating the food schedule next, and you get to hear about it first:
Andy of Busy Bee fame can be there to offer Thursday Dinner to Sunday morning breakfast.? Both parties.? I am looking into a supplemental service for the other times, or you are welcome to use or bring BBQs (it really IS a camping trip this time!).?
?
Nearest food sources are concession in Muddy Run Park, or at the intersection of Routes 272 and 372 at the town of Buck, PA, 5 or 10 minutes away.? If I do get someone interested in the remaining times, which IS possible, I¡¯ll let you know, and hope you will patronize them as well.? Andy has been providing eats at this party for years, enjoys this event when he can, and is a fairly good astrophotographer, using his digital camera.?
?
On a sadder note, one of our long supporters of this party, Barry L Shupp, passed away suddenly this week, his sister Terri posted on facebook.? Terri was know for his love of astronomy and astrophography, and he will be missed by those who knew him.
?
Be safe, everyone,
Phil

I can see that someone has been working on the website, since last Friday if I clicked on Registration it took me to registration for last year, as I mentioned during the DVAA meeting on Friday evening. It was nice to meet you Phil, even if it was on Zoom!

Let us know when we can register.

QUESTION ABOUT ELECTRIC on the field

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hello all,

There was a question about electric being available on the field.? While the answer is no, there is electric available for recharging, at the pavilion.? Generators will not be allowed on the field, but they are allowed in the RV parking area.? Quiet generators are preferred, and baffle boxes could help limit noise.

?

If you must use your car battery for electric, I will have a jumper battery available that can make it easier to start the vehicle, should you draw too much power from the car battery.

Re: #2021eventsUPDATE #2021eventsUPDATE #2021eventsUPDATE #2021eventsUPDATE

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Don and all¡

To answer your question, I have no idea which will be larger.? My hope is that both will be larger than recent years.

?

This is really the first time I¡¯ve attempted 2 parties back to back.? When I did a poll for preferences in 2019, the majority of the votes were split between September and October.? Since 2019 was the first time in this location, and it wasn¡¯t possible last year, I decided to try offering two. ?Attendees mentioned commitments in either month keeping them attending, perhaps two parties will give more people an opportunity to check this location out.? Risky, with double expenses, but it will dictate what I decide to do in 2022.? I need to be able to justify my time and expenses to keep this thing going, and the next point is very important:

?

The PA State Parks have the job of being stewards of this natural resource, and are cautiously limiting initial attendance to 100 vehicles on the playfield for camping and observing.? They are also limiting the number of star parties in a year.? This could be more than 100 attendees on the field, if people carpool.? RVs and larger campers are allowed on more compacted and solid ground in the parking lot, which also happens to be a good observing location. ?This also means we shouldn¡¯t be crowded.? Perhaps, if everything goes well, these limits could be reviewed in the future.?

?

I am required to carefully keep track of attendance, vehicles, and campers/RVs.? Once the limits are reached for the field, the parking lot could be used, but when full, it¡¯s full, and registrations will be halted.? Once registration is open, I recommend you do so ASAP, or end up waiting for the next event.

?

If you have the time to make it to one or both, I hope you¡¯ll agree, this is one little gem of a location for a star party!

I hope you can make it.? See you there!

Phil

Hello everyone!??
First, I wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year!?
I intend to stick to the topic at hand, which is to inform you of the tentative plans for this year, so I won't comment on 2020 until the end.? Let's just hope we all get through this year and get back to our work and play as soon as possible.?
I wish to thank everyone for all your support in the past, and to let you know I am still planning for it's future.? I have been doing a lot of listening and thinking about the situation, and will share what my current thoughts are:

NOTE:? No surprise here.? EVERYTHING IS CONTINGENT ON WHAT HAPPENS FROM THIS POINT.?

DATES:
I am planning to hold 2 parties, one September 8-to-12 (starting two days after Labor Day--which is not permitted for events) and the second party October 6-to-11 (ending on Columbus Day--not a major holiday).?
This may not be possible every year, but I'll see how it goes this year.? I may have to cancel one and not the other.? In the polls I held to determine preferred months, these two were close to even.
The supervisors and I have agreed to these dates providing things become safe enough to allow camping.? We shall make go/no go decisions as we get closer.? I am going to make reservation payments soon, and will proceed with preparations and web site updates as time permits.?

FOOD: I will be checking with the owner of the Busy Bee very soon about availability for each party.? I will keep you informed.? If alternatives need to be used, it won't be the first time.

ABOUT REGISTRATIONS AND CANCELLATIONS
Given the long lead time, and not knowing how quickly things will turn around with vaccinations, I want to be fair about fees and commitments.? I will try to keep the fees the same.? In order to hold this party, I need to have a minimum paid attendance to cover the costs of each, or I would need to cancel.? Knowing attendance ASAP would be a huge help in planning them.? On the other hand, we have a maximum number and type of vehicles allowed on the observing field, and could sell out.? In the good old days, parties had non-refundable registration fees, (Most still do).? While disasters were rare, they have happened.? If a cancellation becomes necessary, I will set a cancellation date for refunds, for those that wish them, and perhaps credits toward future parties.? I will need to assess the fixed expenses and determine a cancellation fee in order to avoid going into major debt for my efforts.? Most expenses are paid in advance.? I can cancel some of the arrangements, but not all.? If not for the generosity of attendees in past years, I would have had to to pay many debts out of my own pocket. No one can do that for long.?
If these contingent dates do or don't work for you, either or both, please let me know with a quick email.? This would be a huge help.

About 2020:?
Some of us know of people that have passed due to Covid-19 or other causes this year.? Others have recovered to one degree or another.? I don't have to rehash anything, we've all seen it on TV.? I want to pass one or two things along here.

I spoke to Ken Bailey in November. Sadly, his wife Karen Baily passed in October due to cancer.? They are the couple that had the camper near the pavilion... and the 2 dogs in strollers.? Ken is hoping to join us again this year.

Lou Mayo, a supporter and past guest speaker, shared that his mom passed away this year.? He also got married, and his photos seem to be full of smiles.??

Please send any news you may have of our attendees to me at philderosa1 @comcast.net.

Thanks everyone for you good will and support.? Please be safe and take all precautions, this new variant of corona is still new.? I'm hoping we can finally see each other and celebrate our hobby together later this year.
Phil De Rosa??

?

Hello All.? Like a local sign says here in York: ?? IS IT 2021 YET?

I know this year has been tough for many if not all of us.? I will try to keep this brief.? I've been asked all year long weather the party is going to be held, and I, like many of you, have been keeping my fingers crossed.? The obvious question is, could we do it safely?
I have come to the conclusion that this no longer possible this year, and probably not at least through the beginning of next year.

At this point, the one date I have picked for the next major party is October 6-10, 2021.? I may also consider a secondary date: September 9-12, 2021 for a 4 day event.? And I have asked about holding short-notice impromptu evening gatherings (no overnight stays in the park) if the weather is being cooperative.

There is no one more disappointed than me.? I was thrilled with the night skies last August when we held the first party at our new location, Susquehannock State Park, in southern Lancaster County.? After 25 years of slugging it through the mud, lot's of work and expenses, we finally found a site that is truly dark, with flush toilets, electric and water supplies, a dumpster, and not one visible light from outside the park to hinder night vision.

It IS at a public park, which IS the problem, only because of Covid.? There is no way to control who visits and uses the public restrooms during the day.? Lancaster has some of the highest covid numbers in this part of the state, and if just one visitor spreads the virus, the possibility exists that at least ONE person could become infected.? In addition to that is the risk that many of our own visitors travel from out of state, and could be exposed from a visit to a restaurant or gas station. ?
Maybe, maybe not.? It should be obvious by now that a lot of people haven't been taking this thing serious enough, and many of them, their families, friends, and medical personnel have suffered because of it.? I am dreading what the numbers may show after the numerous public events that have taken place recently.

Without any kind of quick, reliable testing, we ourselves could be carriers.? Hopefully the people working hardest on this problem do have some luck, quickly.? I hope no one has had anyone they know or love infected.
I, and many of our attendees are over 50 (or 60), with additional risk factors.? I can't justify this risk as being worth it. ?

Please share this info with your newsletter editors, clubs, and others in the hobby.? By all means, this year is a year for solitary, safe astronomy and armchair travel.? I will be planning and working towards events next year, in addition to other projects, so you might not hear from me much.? I'll keep you posted on any possible sessions at night at the location, once it is safe enough to consider them.
I miss this event as much as I miss the people attending and supporting it for years.? Please, be safe everyone.? And lucky.? By for now....? Phil
