Tom and others… it might help knowing what KIND of camping you do.. tent, small camper, car, Big RV.. Not necessary, but I am planning next year for myself, as well as the party.

And IF you might also attend (or not) Memorial day.?

Thanks everyone!

Guys

I want to explain here the reason why I answered A0, B0, C0 and D100 though I may still go there (with lower level of enthusiasm).?

Option A, B and C do not allow vehicles to be parked on the field close to the observing spot and our telescopes. That makes it necessary to drag everything over distance or something like that separates us from our car. What is I want something that I left in the car? Do I really have to walk in the dark to the car?? So, in my view,? it is essential to let the PA State Park people know that that is not a good or acceptable option. By selecting A as an acceptable option (i.e., any figure higher than 0%) PA State Park can force Phil to accept one of these A B or C options. Therefore the message to PA State Parks should be "only option D is OK or else star party will not be popular".?

MERRY CHRISTMAS.AND GOOD NEWS!

开云体育

?

HELLO ALL!

MERRY CHRISTMAS…AND GOOD NEWS!?

?

I got a kind-of positive response from the park supervisor.? I am going to copy and paste part of his email to me so you can see exactly what he said…

------------------------------------------------

“…. We have agreed that we will allow vehicles and tents on the ballfield provided that the weather cooperates. The RV’s, camper trailers, and other heavy vehicles will need to stay on the gravel lots like this past year. We will still require your group to purchase a campsite in the Organized group tenting area for the dates that you will be staying overnight in the park along with pavilion rental. We can further discuss this next week. I will not be back in the office until December 30th. “

------------------------------------------------

We will need to agree on what “provided that the weather cooperates” means.? That should be a fun discussion.

Also, two other things that need to be discussed is “like this past year “, since single-axle camper trailers were allowed on the field, and we were not required to rent campsite in addition to the renting the Pavilion.?

?

But this means, for all intents and purposes, we have not only a York County Star Party in September 16-20, but a Memorial Day No-Frills event at this park.

?

ONE LAST BIT OF INFO NEEDED… PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE A SINGLE-AXLE CAMPER (LIKE MANY DO, INCLUDING ME), I NEED TO PROVIDE NUMBERS TO DISCUSS ABOUT BEING ALLOWED TO CAMP ON THE FIELD.? In other words, if you will or will not attend if you MUST be in the parking lot.? IF IT DOESN’T MATTER, OR IF YOU WILL ATTEND, I NEED TO KNOW.? I don’t know how far I can get with these issues, and I don’t want to wear out our welcome before we get established.?

While there may be restrictions this year, that could change, if we do not have any damage on the field, which I don’t expect.? I’ve been involved with this party for 25 years, and I’ve never been disappointed with anything the attendees have or haven’t done.? It’s been my privilege to host this party, and to meet everyone in this hobby of ours.

?

So now, everyone, I wish you all a safe and happy holiday!? MERRY CHRISTMAS!

C25, D75. I use a 12' Leonard utility trailer, 1 axle (converted to a 1 man camper). I am non visual, 100% imager with 2 cameras on 2 EQ mounts and operate from inside my trailer remotely via 2 computers. I have need of electric power. There are 6 large (group 27) deep cycle batteries with 3 chargers in the trailer. I can operate off battery only but 110AC makes it easier. For multi nights, I need to recharge the batteries no matter what. Too big a task to haul six 70lb batteries anywhere to recharge. Also have on board the trailer a Honda 2KW "quiet" generator that I use at other sites. It's 300 miles from my home (Chesapeake, Va.) to York county, Pa. so 3 days is just barely worth the trip, but I'm interested!

I just ran across this SP on line and assume it's just starting up. A very good example of a really nice SP is Staunton River SP near South Boston, Va. in the Staunton River State Park. The big attraction there is 110AC on the field, plus it's 2 SPs a year for 6 days each and the dates there don't interfere with YCSP dates. Maybe worth looking in to for guide lines.

Hello Stu!? Thanks for asking!? I have to be really quick now, on the way out the door, but this is important enough to several people to answer quickly now….

1.There is some electric available for recharging, at least at the pavilion.? I will try to scout out other usable locations on the property to give a more complete answer.

2.? how heavy your trailer is makes a big difference.? I am working out details with the Parks Dept now, and there are concerns with damage to the play field.? Last year we have 4 or 5 days of rain before and during the party (it figures) but the ground was amazing hard pack with absolutely no damage.? If the weight limit permits only the lot for RVs, many are using generators, the horizon is as good in most respects, better to due south, than the main observing field.?

Last year I had? only 3 months to get that party going.? I am in the process of working to update the websites and complete all details working with the PA Parks department, which are great people trying to help get this party off the ground without having any issues with an unknown event.? I plan to start publicizing in a couple of weeks, and both fields, while amazing for this area, are not huge. ?If not this year, I am expecting to need to limit party size in the near future to keep the grounds pristine for both our sake and to keep the support of the Parks Dept.

Please stay tuned!? Once registration opens, I will be able to see how great a response might be.? I expect to be outlining camping sites in order to allow the largest ?amount of good horizon we can get.

YCSP is not a newly started SP. It has been around for many years now, though this location -Susquehannock State Park is just one year old to YCSP. It was previously known by name MDSP and the name was changed to YCSP about five years ago.??

Was it Mason Dixon SP? MDSP was the original name and it was never in Maryland. Original location was Shreveport North Airport near Kralltown Rd Wellsville in?York County. That spot ended when the owner of the airstrip passed about 5 years ago. This new spot was located in 2019 and seems to be excellent. Bortle Class 4 or better. No...I don't remember? the name of the SP but best I remember it was at a state park in Maryland. We (in the Chesapeake area) lost a long standing SP last year when the campgrounds (where it was held) ownership changed hands. Whether or not it will be returning is questionable as of now, so I'm "on the hunt" for another SP and this fits in perfectly (time wise) with the SRSP

Hi Stu,

Good to hear from you. ?Dee & I attended this SP last August – it used to be the Mason Dixon SP, and is the closest one for us. ?It's now at a nice little state park, but the main road to the camping area and river overlook goes past the main observing field (baseball field) and parking lot (by the rest rooms, where heavy rigs like mine camp), so there could be a few headlights going by. ?I got SQM-L readings between 20.55 and 20.75, but light domes are surprisingly low (below the trees) especially given the proximity to cities. ?Also, we looked for available electrical outlets on the restroom building – didn't find any. ?We're currently planning to attend again, both dates, so hope to see you there.
CS,
Roy

For me,
I like that YCSP is a few days longer with a better chance of good weather and I am not packing up so soon.?
I like that YCSP is closer to home, no need for a co-pilot.?

I am at Cherry Spring between 8-10 days at a time in and around the star party dates.? There are always around 100 or so astronomers there during this period.? The observing field swells to more then 400 during the star party.??

Long drive for me, too. I live in the Hunt Valley section of north central Baltimore county - about 20 miles due north of Baltimore.? But, I've done the drive so many times over the last 25 years that its become routine.

Re: 2020 Dates

Its too bad that the YCSP is on the same dates...? ?I know that my small group of 11 would have attended both, as Phil's party is always a topic of conversation and we all wished it would be in October.? Nevertheless, given the choice Cherry Springs wins out.

Hope its a nice week during both parties.

Paul, Thank you for the dates.

For me,
I like that YCSP is a few days longer with a better chance of good weather and I am not packing up so soon.?
I like that YCSP is closer to home, no need for a co-pilot.?
I will still plan on going to YCSP.?

I have not been to BFSP.? I have been to the area/park - beautiful area and dark.

Hi Roy...good to hear from you again...Hope you and Dee are doing fine...sounds so. Still using that beautiful "monster" scope I bet. I'm still imaging as always and trying to fill the void that losing the ECSP created. The YCSP is just about at the limit of how far I want to travel pulling the trailer. Hope I can make it this year and more. The James River SP is just getting it's feet wet too. They're in Buckingham county in Va. I was all hooked to the trailer and packed to go there last fall but a tornado wiped out their power the night before the SP was due to start...bummer!

Be seeing you,
Stu

Hi Stu,

Good to hear from you.? Dee & I attended this SP last August – it used to be the Mason Dixon SP, and is the closest one for us.? It's now at a nice little state park, but the main road to the camping area and river overlook goes past the main observing field (baseball field) and parking lot (by the rest rooms, where heavy rigs like mine camp), so there could be a few headlights going by.? I got SQM-L readings between 20.55 and 20.75, but light domes are surprisingly low (below the trees) especially given the proximity to cities.? Also, we looked for available electrical outlets on the restroom building – didn't find any.? We're currently planning to attend again, both dates, so hope to see you there.
CS,
Roy

Thanks, Paul.? Steve Taylor, President of the club CPO, let me know the dates as soon as they decided on them.? Maybe next year will work out for your schedule, or maybe you’d like to attend Memorial Day.
