1.? Constant communication with Steve - as in the Bat Phone???? Seriously, regarding the Black Forest Star Party - Bill Gartner is the gentleman you need to speak with. Steve Taylor (steveastrouk) is a terrific guy whom I met, and corresponded with on CloudyNights.? Didn't Steve vote for October???? ? Anyway, for up to date info, Bill is your guy.? The last time I spoke with Bill, he indicated that a September date was preferable.? Incidentally, he received overwhelming positive feedback from this year's event on the late September dates that were used.? Its the latest star party ever at Cherry Springs and it was fantastic.? My group was there for 8 nights - we observed every night.? For those that have never been here is some additional information.

I would rather not make a choice as to which one to attend, but rather attend BOTH.? The only way that happens is if the two events occur on different dates.? I think Cindy may have been running that one and Mark Starner ran a couple of them prior to that.? In 2002 I was responsible for having Phil Harrington as the speaker.? I put you in touch with him.??This was the last year at Spring Valley.??And, in 2008, Bob Forbes and I recruited Tom Trusock to be the keynote speaker.?

Perhaps, this was during the time period where you were mired in the accounting irregularity that was uncovered with the YCAS and were not able to focus on astronomy activities.? Brad is one of my best friends and to be clear (and my log books bear this out) Brad and I coordinated 23 public observing sessions.? Brad and I we'll be together over the Thanksgiving weekend.? Look, at the end of the day, its your gathering so do as you wish.? The feedback from folks was interesting.? But honestly, this seems less about astronomy and more about just getting together socially.? If thats the case, no worries but don't call it a Star Party.??

Ok, all points noted, especially my memory.? Thank you for sharing new info to me.? But you may ask Brad about his feelings and comments about selling his gear. ? Please be assured, this IS THE RESULT OF THE VOTE.? I waited extra weeks to close it, after repeatedly reminding people to share their preference.? Many of the October votes would not have existed if I hadn’t waited as long as I did.? The one walk in was a vote for October, too.? Even without my vote, September won.? This is not to say I had perfect info.? It also isn’t impossible that it might change.? But I know there are people out there who may still need to put in for vacation, and can’t wait forever. ? ?

The schedule for the next BFSP is not yet known. The September date WAS very popular, we got decent seeing on a couple of nights, but? members of the CPO board are a little concerned we don't chase the moon out to the end of September. We are currently working with the State on dates for next year, and we have a board meeting (with Bill G) where dates and future plans will be discussed. There is no enthusiasm for early August, that's for sure. I think the weekend nearest new moon in August is closer to it than the September one, but I might have my dates crossed up.

The new moon dates for 2020 are as follows:
August:? August 18th September:? September 17th October:? October 16th
Cherry Springs State Park is committed to the Galeton Rotary Club's Woodsman's Show that occurs every year on the first weekend in August.? See here:??.??This is non-negotiable and all star party events have to work around this.? For 2020 its scheduled for?July 31, August 1 & 2, 2020.
The observing field is quite a mess after this event.? I would tend to think August 18th is probably not enough time to remove all of the wood chips, logs, pile-driven timbers etc. from the field.? This is why I believe September will be the date.

Cherry Springs State Park is committed to the Galeton Rotary Club's Woodsman's Show that occurs every year on the first weekend in August.? See here:??.??This is non-negotiable and all star party events have to work around this.? For 2020 its scheduled for?July 31, August 1 & 2, 2020.
The observing field is quite a mess after this event.? I would tend to think August 18th is probably not enough time to remove all of the wood chips, logs, pile-driven timbers etc. from the field.? This is why I believe September will be the date.
The schedule for the next BFSP is not yet known. The September date WAS very popular, we got decent seeing on a couple of nights, but? members of the CPO board are a little concerned we don't chase the moon out to the end of September. We are currently working with the State on dates for next year, and we have a board meeting (with Bill G) where dates and future plans will be discussed. There is no enthusiasm for early August, that's for sure. I think the weekend nearest new moon in August is closer to it than the September one, but I might have my dates crossed up.

While I've got your attention, I would like you to know I am hoping to get an earlier weekend approved for a no-frills party before summer.? I've been trying to contact the park supervisor, and I'll let you know when That happens and when I get an answer. Phil

Want to share my experience this morning. I had setup my iOptron Cube driving my upgraded Short Tube 80 mm f/5 achromat with a Thousand Oaks solar filter. It worked great visually using a TeleVue 8-24mm zoom EP.? We were able to view the transit perfectly.?
Since I had done it at the local elementary school I did not want to risk by having kids view the sun through the scope for safety reasons.? So after a while, I fitted my old Meade DSI imager in place of the EP and tried to focus it. There I ran into real difficulty. It was the glare from sunlight that made it hard to view the laptop screen and also the poor refresh rate of Meade DSI. I did achieve some level of focus finally and kids were all happy. Here below is a screen grab. Hope you can make out the tiny dot of Mercury on the solar disc. I could have  tried to get sharper focus but I was scared that I may lose the tiny spot that was just visible, though barely.?

I am awaiting confirmation with the parks department for the dates I submitted.? I expect them to be accepted from my conversation with the park supervisor, but still have not heard back from him.? I will continue to attempt to gain a confirmation, and keep you posted.
Currently I am in NJ, awaiting the first signs of the winter storm that is headed here and going to make a mess for the next 2 days.? I will be returning to PA on Tuesday, and hoping that everyone has a safe return from any travel you have made to be together with your families and friends.

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season, seeing friends and family.
I do have news, and an important request for responses--ASAP---to the ONE QUESTION BELOW, or we may have a problem.
First, I finally got a commitment from the state parks that TWO sets of dates have been approved, one for the Wednesday-Sunday September 15-20 York County Star Party, and.... a no-frills star party for Memorial Day weekend, Friday-Monday, May 22-25.
However, I am still negotiating terms with the supervisors involved. The two persons involved have no experience with star parties, and were not part of the local team that was present for last year's event. Their job is to be the best stewards of park lands entrusted to them, and I can appreciate the seriousness of their position. Their employee, Bob, that WAS witness to our event, and supported the use of some of vehicles , has retired, and the previous supervisors have moved on to other posts.
The terms put to me were that NO vehicles would be allowed on the ballfield.
This negotiation is a work in progress. I may be speaking to the top supervisors tomorrow, or after the holidays, or both. I am going to ask everyone to respond to the following questions by email to me, at: philderosa1@...
I need your responses ASAP from as many as possible to negotiate, whether or not you plan to attend this year, so here is the one question with choices. Please don't panic! You may reply by simply responding as completely as possible, for example only:
A0 B20 C30 D 98 (A0 means zero percent)
THE QUESTION IS: WHAT IS THE % LIKELIHOOD OF YOU ATTENDING THE PARTY IF:
A. you are required to use the official campgrounds in the trees at the north end of the parking lot, and could leave equipment on the field overnight (I've already told them the party won't happen here)

Phil, ?My wife and I have attended 3 out of 4 York Star Parties and we plan to attend the September Party and maybe even the Memorial Party. We have the RV so we will be parking in the parking lot like last year, no matter what is decided.? My guess is D will have the greatest response of attending as I believe most people where happy with the arrangements. Then I assume C would have a higher percentage as most astronomers are older and don't want to be carrying their equipment. A and B would have the lowest percentage for the reason I just gave for C. Also with A if the horses are there again they would be riding in the middle of the observing field. Like I said we plan on attending the Star party, the only thing that would keep us is if RV's were not allowed at all or if dogs were not allowed.?

I’ve been to 3 YCSP over the years and unfortunately I missed last years. But I’m likely to attend in the future - assuming this destination - only if D is the option - i.e., D100.
I don’t want to lug my equipment in and out of the field and I would want my vehicle very close by to evacuate into for a drier and more comfortable slumber in the event of a downpour or deluge - as seems to happen all too often during the night on these SPs.
Thanks for your continued and sustained effort to make this SP succeed. Roger

I could not make it earlier this year due to back injury but I am looking forward to both events of 2020. However I may not attend if I can not park my car next to the tent and telescope. I can not carry all the equipment over a distance. So options are as follows.?

THE QUESTION IS: WHAT IS THE % LIKELIHOOD OF YOU ATTENDING THE PARTY IF:
A. you are required to use the official campgrounds in the trees at the north end of the parking lot, and could leave equipment on the field overnight (I've already told them the party won't happen here)
B. TENTS and SCOPES will be allowed on the field, vehicles are not allowed on the field, and you are required to carry all camping and astro gear to the ballfield
C. TENTS and SCOPES will be allowed on the field, but vehicles will be allowed only for unloading and loading, but required to park in the parking lot near the bathrooms (this MAY be an option if we can't fit enough people on the observing field for a SMALL TO MID-SIZE party. I don't know what that number is yet.)

A??? My "astro" equipment is small, I could deal with it.? Would
I be able to park/drive to my tent?

"stuff"...? I could do it.? I might have a heart attack, trying.?

Hello all.. Happy Holidays! HELP ASAP--I still need more responses!!!? It is pretty clear to me what I will need to do, but more responses would make this obvious to the park supervisors. ? Thanks all that responded so far, a total of 16.? At least 4 of the responders have big RVs that, bless you, don’t care and are planning to attend.? I’m ok with that IF I have no expenses.? The lot has a decent field of view, and still a good place for observing. ? But this does not look promising for this state park if there is no compromise here.?
