From: "Olson, Donald J" <dolson@...> To: "Robert Doc Wright" <godfearer@...> Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2024 4:35 AM Subject: RE: The next step for My Talking books Yes, I'll paste a copy of it below: NLS is pleased to announce the release of BARD Express, version 3.0.0.7. This release includes the long-awaited BARD Express Player, which allows patrons to choose an audio book or magazine from their BARD Express bookshelf and listen to it directly on their PC. Much like BARD Mobile, the BARD Express Player allows users to adjust the narration speed; jump to navigation points such as part, chapter, and article; create bookmarks; and much more. Users can also create global settings for narration speed, auto-play, auto-rewind, and more. Patrons using JAWS and NVDA can either use the tab key to move to each of the player's functions or tap a single letter assigned to that function. For example, they can type F for fast forward, R for rewind, and B for bookmarks. A complete list of commands can be found under the BARD Express Help menu. Scripts are built into the 2024 version of JAWS to optimize the BARD Express Player. Patrons using JAWS 2022 or 2023 can download the same scripts from the BARD Express page on the NLS website and import them into their screen readers. We recommend reading Section 7 of the BARD Express user guide, which is dedicated to the BARD Express Player to familiarize yourself with the new player. The user guide can be found on the BARD Express page on the NLS website For more information, please contact your network library. Do you have any information on that? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Olson, Donald J" <dolson@...> To: "Olson, Donald J" <dolson@...> Sent: Thursday, August 8, 2024 10:26 AM Subject: The next step for My Talking books Good afternoon, I recommend reading this message in its entirety. Some of the information is a review from my previous email. There is however new content we want you to take note of at the end of this message. Most importantly, My Talking Books is back in service. As stated in my previous message, all of you are once again reset to new users of the My Talking Books service. This means the following may be reset to their defaults. Note, your BARD Wishlist will remain in place and will not be affected in any way. *Your streaming History will be deleted * Your Bookshelves will be emptied, and bookmarks will be removed *All Preferences will be reset to their defaults including 1. Experience Level 2. The number of options spoken in a list of book titles 3. How lists are numbered 4. What information is spoken 5. Reading Speeds 6. Jump forward and back default times 7. Volume level 8. Sleep timer You will need to reauthenticate just like you have in the past, by asking your smart speaker to open My Talking Books to verify your phone number. There is no need to reset any passwords. I'm sure we all remember when we had to reset a password the first time, we signed into the service more than a year ago. That technological hurdle has been overcome. Instead, just tell your speaker how you would like to receive the verification code when she asks. Note: you will only be able to authenticate with the service if your BARD account is active. If your account is currently inactive, call your cooperating library to have it reactivated before authenticating with My Talking Books. Once you have reauthenticated with My Talking Books, you will automatically gain early access to the expanded open beta because you have been helpful by testing this skill since it was opened in the first half of 2023. This means you will not need to register for the open beta which will be available in the fall. An announcement will go out in late August to let the rest of NLS patrons know they can register for the open beta. As I said, you will not need to register since you are an original beta tester of the skill. Remember, for you to be grandfathered into the upcoming open beta, you must reauthenticate with My Talking Books by 5:00 P.M. Eastern on the 22nd of August. If for any reason you no longer wish to use My Talking Books, there is no need to reauthenticate. Now, on to the next topic. We ask for your help to stress test the My Talking Books system. The only way this can be done is to have a high number of people using the service. You can be part of the test by logging into the skill between 2:00 and 4:00 Eastern on August 14. Simply use the service as you normally would. , for as long as you can during that 2-hour period. This will help us gage future system behavior when there are thousands of patrons using the service at the same time. Thank you everyone. Reauthenticate your My Talking Books account, then go find your next favorite book.
