Welcome
Welcome to the W7GRA group discussion platform. This system is very similar to the old system, but with a few improvements. To start, once a member, you can send emails to the [email protected] email address. Sending emails to this address will send out an email to all the club members and non-club members who have activated their Groups IO account just like the old system did. With Groups.IO though, you can send HTML formated emails, post pictures and if you log into the website, easily search for older messages. Tyson W7BL

ARRL Director of Emergency Management Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, gave an overview of the goals and direction of the ARES program, recent developments, and how partnerships and collaboration are crucial. He reviewed developments in ARES resources that he and his staff have worked on. Johnston noted that we are celebrating 90 years of ARES this year and talked about how community service and emergency communications have evolved recently, and why the Amateur Radio Service is as critical as ever in a robust disaster plan. Johnston also talked about being ready, responsive, and resilient for any incidents and events. Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, ARRL Director of Emergency Management, speaks about the goals and direction of the ARES program at the ARES forum at Hamvention this past weekend. [Rick Palm, K1CE, photo] More than 280 amateur radio operators volunteered during the 129th running of the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2025. Operators were working at virtually every location connected with the race, including the starting line, the entire course, the finish line, transportation, and various operations centers, including the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), the State EOC Unified Command Center (UCC), and the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) Race Operations Center (ROC) in Boston. Combined, they performed communications duties that included logistics support as a primary function and backup support for medical and other public safety requests for the race as needed. ¡°This is one of the largest public service events amateur radio supports in the United States and planning started over 6 months in advance,¡± said Rob Macedo, KD1CY, of the BAA Communications Committee. Hurricane Season is Here: Prepare Now--Use the National Weather Service¡¯s (NWS) hurricane preparedness reminders and take the time to find out how rain, wind, water, and even tornadoes could happen far inland from where a hurricane or tropical storm makes landfall. FEMA has two fact sheets: ¡°Hurricane Hazard Information Sheet¡± and ¡°Power Outage Hazard Information Sheet.¡± The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Hurricane Prep your Station--Ensure availability of an emergency backup power source, i.e., gas-powered generators, and 12-13 V batteries, check all antenna and radio connections; and check into your local and section ARES nets and become familiar with them (see the ARRL Net Directory). The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN), founded on Labor Day weekend in 1965, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2025. The net, known for relaying surface observations into the National Hurricane Center, is also seeking volunteers to serve as net control operators. Net Manager Bobby Graves, KB5HAV, reports HWN is preparing for what could be, yet again, an above?-average hurricane season, and that the net needs more amateur

John Britschgi W7GQE (SK)
13
Good Afternoon, I unfortunately have some bad news to report. Friday night, February 7th, I received word that John Britschgi (W7GQE) passed away at the Grande Ronde Hospital due to a heart attack. His daughter didn¡¯t have much more to tell me other than to let his friends in the club know. I did find a short notice in the East Oregonian. It appears that Loveland will be handling his services. I will try to reach out to John¡¯s daughter in a few days after I think things have settled down a bit. As more information becomes available, I will let the club know. https://obituaries.eastoregonian.com/obituary/john-britschgi-1092617670 Tyson Brooks W7BL Secretary W7GRA -- Tyson Brooks W7BL

Good morning again. We have "people" constantly electronically attacking us on the daily basis. No mater who you are. Non profits/clubs are no exception. This week some degenerate has been attempting to scam our board members by acting like they are sending mail from me. Keep this in mind. I do not send emails from "president@..." our board member email addresses are forwarders/relays. If you get an email from one of these email addresses, they aren't us. It is usually someone "spoofing" the address. These email addresses are published, so that our personal email addresses don't have to be, and to prevent our personal addresses from experiencing these attempts. Additionally be very leery of anyone asking for you to send or spend money. Money things are addressed in our meetings. Always know that you are talking to the person that you think you are. IE call the person. Or generate an email to that person(do not simply reply, use YOUR known email address for the person). This isn't to scare people, this is to warn and advise. I do not want any of our members(or anyone at that) to get scammed by these people. If you want to discuss this, or explore this topic more. Please email me at mike@... Again, have a great weekend! de KK7MA Michael Abernathy La Grande, Oregon

7QP is today!

Good morning everyone. Kandi and I decided to go camping. As we are helping friends on Mother's Day weekend, and her cousin wanted to attempt to pick some morels this weekend. Bonus for me! Last evening, we setup a OCFD inverted C @ about 40ft at the peak. Anyone that wants to operate, that is restricted either by gear or license, you are more than welcome to come visit today. Also anyone that just wants to say hi, you are more than welcome! We will have rain showers today. Check out our location on the pin below. Instructions: take the spring creek exit heading south west After the pavement ends there will be a sign for the control burns(think road construction portable diamond signs), take a right at that sign. Follow that main road/trail until you reach us! If you want to day camp, Please bring your own food, drinks fine china, and chairs. I didn't think that far ahead. We do have a fire, and cooking materials. Hope to see you, Have a great weekend! de KK7MA Michael Abernathy La Grande, Oregon

HRS USB 2 CW Paddle adapter order
5
I have been in contact with Ham Radio Solutions about a club discount. If we order 10 or more, we can get a 10% discount. If it is less than 10, then we can get a slight discount on shipping. If you are wanting to order one or more of these, please fill out the club order form. I was planning on getting one more for myself to keep at my office for when I have down time. The normal price is $25 with another $5 for shipping for a total of $30. If we order enough we should be paying less. I cut off orders the night of the next club meeting. If you haven't seen this little thing, take a look at the link below https://hamradio.solutions/vband/ W7GRA Order form After this go around, I don't plan on ordering any more unless a bunch of people really want them. Happy Morse Code Day! and calendar updates
Morse Code Day is celebrated on April 27, commemorating the birth of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph and co-developer of Morse code, born in 1791. It honors the historical significance of Morse code, a system of dots and dashes used for long-distance communication, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. The day recognizes its impact on telegraphy, maritime communication, and military operations, as well as its continued use by amateur radio enthusiasts. Celebrations often include learning Morse code, sharing its history, or engaging in related activities like radio events. In other news, I've made some updates to the club Google Calendar. If I'm missing any important ham radio related dates / events. Please let me know Tyson W7BL
