7QP is May 3rd
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Dick Frey <k4xu@...> Date: Mon, Feb 17, 2025 at 2:48 PM Subject: 7QP is May 3rd To: Greetings from the 7QP! The 17th annual 7QP will run this year on Saturday, May 3. We have an outstanding record to uphold. Based on number of logs received last year, 7QP is still the 3rd largest QSO party in the country and growing. For the past several years we have had all 36 Oregon Counties on the air. All kinds of 7QP info is available at www.7QP.org. If you log on a computer, please email us a copy of your log even if you don¡¯t care to compete for an award. It helps us score the event. A convenient Web Form is available to paste or upload your log into. If you are not using a computer logging program, now is the time to get into it. I suggest using N1MM+. It's easy, it's FREE, and was used by 63% of all entrants last year. Even if you are using another program to log your QSOs, DXCC, etc, you can easily export your log from N1MM back into it when the contest is over. Not only that, since there are three other QSO parties that also use our weekend, N1MM is the only one that will let you log their exchange as sent. You can then enter these by sending your log to them too. It helps us and them also. Whether you can participate this year or not, I'd appreciate your reply to confirm your email address (and note any duplication), so we can make other arrangements to cover your county. Gilliam, Grant, Harney, Hood River, Malheur, Morrow, Sherman, Walawa, Wasco, and Wheeler remain as targets for expeditions and/or mobiles. Talk it up when you can. Consider giving a talk to your local club about the 7QP. Your support and enthusiasm for this event is the backbone of the participation in Oregon. And remember to put May 3rd on your wife¡¯s calendar so you don¡¯t get pre-scheduled. I look forward to hearing from you and, as always, thanks for your support of the 7QP. 73, Dick Frey, K4XU Bend, OR

Forestry management plan: proposed elimination of "open unless closed"
This is very dear to my heart. If it isn¡¯t dear to your heart, please do some online reading on the topic. Given the times of the meetings, It's doubtful that Kandi or I will be able to attent. This affects all of us, and sets the grounds for removal of access for generations to come. If you are able, please attend the public meeting with Congressman Cliff Bentz. Let him know about our concerns with the proposed elimination of the "open unless closed" designation within the Wallowa-Whitman and Malheur Forests. Winlink on Apple devices
? Hello, I was working on getting Winlink to work with my Apple devices. As ¡°one of those people¡± who does not have any Windows or Android devices, I was hoping to find a way to do Winlink and potentially some of the other digital things from my iPad or iPhone. I came across a program that runs on iPad or iPhone and handles Winlink. It can send messages easily with Telnet (over Wi-Fi/cellular). It can pair with packet KISS TNC radios and modems via Bluetooth or VARA modems via Wi-Fi. I will put below the item I am using and the links to what I bought to make it work. I am using an iPad with a USB-C connection. I have tested this on both a Tidradio H8 and a Yaesu FT-70D. Here is what I used to link it all together: App - RadioMail (works on iPhone or iPad) https://radiomail.app/ This link has lots of information about modes, connections, features, and more. I would look it over if you are looking to go down the route. PTT control cable - This is the Digirig Lite (I went with this because my iPad has USB-C, and any newer phone will also have USB-C) https://digirig.net/product/digirig-lite/ You can also use this cable, I think, but read the product warnings as it might not work on all devices. https://digirig.net/product/vox-ptt-cable-for-smartphones/ Yaesu Audio cable - This plugs into my Yaesu and then into the Digirig Lite. I had no problems having this setup trigger PTT or hear the incoming audio. https://digirig.net/product/yaesu-ht-cable-for-digirig-mobile/ Tidradio Audio cable - This is the same as the Yaesu one just for different audio plugin types. The description shows it working with many radios like Baofeng, Kenwood, and more. https://digirig.net/product/baofeng-cables/ For me, I am using the HT to do Winlink on 2m. This app does support the other bands; you just need to find the interface for the radio that works for you. The app does have a one-time upfront cost of, I think, $15. The app is kept updated, the features seem to be in-depth, and the developer and community are very responsive. For me, I found it worth the cost. I was happy to support this developer because it is an app that is modern and saved me from getting a laptop to haul around. This app also does support the Winlink Forms, and I found it easy to fill out and read them. As I am not familiar with exactly how the Windows ones work, I cannot speak to if it¡¯s worse/same/better. It does feel very good to me though. The forms do have a yearly $10 cost. Again, I don¡¯t mind that as it supports the developer, and he keeps it updated with new forms as they are added. If you have questions or want to know more on this, I am happy to share what knowledge I can. I am still learning as I go. KJ7KAO -David

Treasurers Report 1-28-2025
Good Morning to All; Attached below is my current Treasures report showing $6,598.65 in our club account. This balance reflects an expense of $285.94 paid to Tyson Brooks for food reimbursement and $100.00 deposited for 2025 club dues that were mailed to me. I know that our January meeting is our busiest meeting of the year and I will make every effort to be at the meeting tonight. CHD Winter Preparedness tomorrow 2
Good evening, everyone Sounds like we have 2 or 3 volunteers (Cathy, Mike R. and David) for tomorrow. It starts at 3pm and runs until 6pm over at the CHD building here in La Grande. I¡¯m going to meet up with Cathy tomorrow with all the fliers we can hand out. If anyone else would like to join them, please do! These things are usually easy. You just need to be willing to talk to people about ham radio. The one thing we really want to do is get names, phone numbers and email addresses of people that stop by. If they are not willing to give us that info, not a big deal. If that happens then try to keep track of the number of people that stop by to visit. While this is going on, I should be able to take call if there are any questions. Tyson W7BL -- Tyson Brooks W7BL
