At 10:17 am (local time) on 10/17, you can join people across Montana practicing .
?
Mark your calendar to participate 10/17/24 @ 10:17am-all are welcome to participate.? Watch for more details to come.

Hello All,
?
Stacy and I have participated in the great shakeout exercise in the past.? At 10:17AM on 10/17/24 is the time at date a simulated earthquake event will take place.? Typically what is done is an announcement will be made over the local repeater indicating that there has been an earthquake and that this repeater is out of service and we will move to a simplex frequency.? Once on the simplex frequency a net is run and basic questions are asked of each participating station including:
?
  • Damage report for your area( Are there any fires, flooding, fallen rock, etc...)
  • How is your station powered (Do you have power, generator, solar, batteries, etc...)
  • What bands are available at your station
  • Do you have access to Winlink at your station
There is no official reporting or logging required to participate in the event, but this would be a good event for learning:
  • VHF Simplex propagation between stations in the valley
  • Who has what capabilities at their disposal
  • Emergency Communications
?
As a bonus WA1TYB in Helena will be bringing up the State DES station (KM7DES) and we can try to send a message over Winlink on HF 40 or 80. They are asking for "Did You Feel It" (DYFI, of course) messages.? That is a canned form in the Winlink repertoire, and automatically gets sent to the USGS. Put an additional address in there on the cc line, for KM7DES, the State DES station.? Make sure it is marked "EXERCISE" (which it is by default).?

Here is the official link to the Great Shakeout?

Stacy and Eric,
Pat KK7KGP and I will do a "rehearsal" between us for the Great Montana Shake Out?because one of us will be at a workshop at 10:17 AM on 10/17/2024.
Our current Winlink version is 1.5.42.0 (according to Help>Contents>Updates).
In the past I have read for a variety of software programs the advice: Do not update your version.
What about Winlink?
A popup asks us if we wish to update to version 1.7.18.0?
Looking forward to your advice,
Carol KA7ROL

My husband, Pat KK7KGP, and I registered and completed our participation in the Great Shakeout 2024 today -- since we will not be near radios/computers on October 17th. We found the experience valuable! An option was to review emergency procedures, for example.
<shakeout.org/montana/register> is an option for interested hams who can not participate in the GHRC's organized Shakeout plan on October 17th.

Carol,

Wonderful!? And thank you for sharing your experience of the Great Shakeout!??

Thank you,
Stacy KK7CJV

We had great participation with the Shakeout!? 8 stations checked into the Earthquake Emergency net on 146.58 from the Gallatin valley.? I am including a map generated on HAMRS and then a link to a Google map of all the participants and their locations.? I see a need for more drills to get a bigger sampling of hams and their capabilities in our area and to give opportunity to those who could not participate today.??
?
Also if anyone was in the Bozeman area when the 1959 earthquake happened, we would love to hear of your memories and stories from that fateful night.? So please share what your experiences were with all of us.
?
Thank you to all who participated!

Old guys love to share stories, so I can tell mine.? I was a 5-year-old when the 1959 earthquake hit SW Mt. We lived on the corner of Babcock and 10th (now the Urgent Care parking lot), and our old juniper still stands on the corner. Back then our two radio stations, KXXL and KBMN, both gave news on the hour but they didn't have much to report first thing that morning¡ªthey only reported that an earthquake had occurred.? We only received one TV channel in Bozeman (KXLF Butte) but it had no news when it signed on at 7AM (it signed off nightly at midnight), so no-one knew quite what had happened, or the extent of damage.? My mother's formal china was on a display shelf in our kitchen that had collapsed, and she was an unhappy lady that morning picking up the pieces. A couple of framed photos on the walls had fallen to the floor and were broken. My dad (who later became N7HEU)? did a house inspection and learned that our chimney had a big crack that would need to be repaired. My mother put my brother and me into the tub for our morning bath and the water was swishing from side to side. To our delight our rubber ducks were very active. The MSU fieldhouse was under construction at the time and the neighbors were all questioning if it had survived. Dad decided to drive up to see if it had collapsed. He bundled the whole family into our Nash Rambler, and we drove up to campus.? We parked across 11th street at the chicken farm (now the site of Bridger Brewing and MSU alumni buildings). He did a walkaround and couldn't see any structural damage, so we returned home to report to the neighbors. I don't think the news outlets were able to learn exactly what happened for a day or two because there was no communication or access in or out of West Yellowstone.? The roads in every direction had deep and broad cracks and were impassable.? Power and telephone were out in the town.? I learned years later that several local hams were able to get to West Yellowstone with equipment and provided initial reports and communication to the outside world.? ?
I suppose the upshot is that southern Gallatin County is on a major fault line and located in a volcanic caldera. The Bozeman/Three Forks areas also sit on large fault lines.? ?
