Hello All,
?
From coffee discussions, we have decided to conduct an impromptu 10 Meter simplex net this Thursday @ 7:00pm our local time.? The intention is to play with 10 meter, learning propagation and ground wave.? We did a little day time experiment, where Mickey(KK7NNE), Norm(KD7TQM), Ryan(KG7PWS), Jay(KK7WHW) and myself(KK7CJV) checked to see how well we were able to hear all stations.? Most stations in Belgrade were heard a solid 55, with Ryan winning signal strength at a 57.? Jay in the center of Bozeman was heard by some but not all out in Belgrade.? Jay had a signal of a 44 to my QTH.? I also was heard 59 in Michigan as Greg(W8VIJ) gave me the first signal report after asking if the frequency was in use.? I explained what we all locally were trying with 10 Meter and he kindly stepped to the side and listened as we conducted our quick experiment. ? NOW to experiment during no sunlight.?
?
So join us while we all play radio and conduct a simple 10 Meter net @ 7:00pm around 28.355 +/-.? This is open to all hams--Technicians this means you can play too!? So come join us for some local HF fun!?

Stacy (kk7cjv) If you can come to help me register our activation maybe we can set up the radio for 10 meter. Right now the antenna is outside my window and needs to be moved. It¡¯s a little bit of a dangle to get to it but with some help we could do it.
RSVP.? KF7YUS. Carolyn?

During the 1960s, before VHF and 2 meter repeaters in this area, most of the area hams communicated with each other locally by using mobile 10 meter radios (Gonset brand I believe).? All on AM from what I recall.? WA7U

Hello,
?
Just wanted to update:? Tuesday after the Bridger Net some of us experimented with 10 Meter.? We all started on 28.355 USB, then we changed modes and tried FM and then AM.? Great exercise to learn the 10 Meter band, modes of operation, and how to operate and change settings on your radio.? Great fun!
?
Hope to hear you all on the air Thursday night(1/9/25) @ 7:00 on 28.355!

We listened to 28.355 USB Mode AM on our Eton (Elite Executive) and a couple of minutes after 7:00 p.m. (1/9/2025) heard a male voice, but the words were unclear. Our VX-6 connected to a Diamond X300 at 28.355 AM did not transmit voices. Carol KA7ROL

I tried a few times from down in WYS but no luck. I could hear some faint voices on 28.355 USB at about 0208 UTC. The noise floor here was extremely high tonight.

A very informative evening on Ham radio tonight. The different modes were received to more or less effective depending mostly (I believe) on location and how well the radios where set up for the different modes. The best all around is SSB. Guess that's?why it is so popular. Nice to know what's going to work in an emergency. They power output didn't seem to affect as much as one would expect.? All in all it was fun. Thanks Stacy for doing this and setting it up in the first place. On Thu, Jan 9, 2025 at 7:41?PM Jeff "Gus" KK7RUQ via <jeffreydavidparker= [email protected]> wrote:

Hello Everyone,
?
What a great exercise!? Thank you to everyone who participated!!? We had 13 on the list.? We started on 28.355 USB then changed modes to FM, then AM.? Seeing who could hear who in each mode before returning to USB.? The net ended at 8:00.? As net control I started out at 50 watts but quickly changed to 100 watts like most of the other stations.? The power change didn't seem to change much to the other stations ability to receive my signal.? I was also on the wire-Off Center Dipole up a little over 30'.? I'm sure if I was on the beam I would have heard more of the Bozeman stations.? Todd-WA7U had the best station in Bozeman, beam pointed toward my QTH up 50', so he was the relay for the Bozeman stations.? Thank you again to Todd for playing along and helping by relaying the traffic!? During our experiment, I learned how to be net control for a net that was not a 'normal' net.? The challenge was very fun and informative!? Matt-AA7VG had the best Belgrade signal to my QTH.? It was a great exercise in learning how to change modes on your radio.? Some of us had never played with the FM or AM modes on our radios.? Great fun!? I'm not sure if there is interest in doing another net but I would like to try one more time - with our beam up 50'.?
?
Gus- thank you for letting us know you were trying to play along.? You were probably hearing Todd-WA7U.? Hopefully you can play again if we try it once more.? I could then beam your direction to try to pick you out of the noise.? I was hearing someone down in the noise but there was no way on the wire that I could pick out who or what was in the noise.
?
Carol-? Yes the VX-6 will listen on FM and AM but the antenna you have hooked up to the radio is resonant on 2 meter and 70 cm so not going to hear much on that radio with that antenna.? Now the Eton you should have been able to hear us.? We started out on USB(7:00) then moved to FM, then moved to AM (this would have been about 7:45ish), then moved back to USB.? You may have heard garbled voices, because of the different modes.? IF you would have just kept monitoring, I believe you would have eventually heard clear, copy-able? voices.
?
I'm sure there will be much discussion of the 10 Meter Net Experiment at coffee this Saturday @ Cafe M in Belgrade 9-12!? Thank you all who participated!?

Will have it completed hopefully this next week and have it up.? In fact I would like to share some information at some point about HOA¡¯s that the President of the HOA we live in talked to me about.? Others in the club may already know it but I was not aware of it.? Anyway - - hopefully we another type of activity again so I can play too.? Take care and CU soon. 73 Ronnie

I would like to participate also, I was a day off last week and missed it.? Was all excited to play radio then realized it was already Friday ??
I have a beam at about 58 feet and a off center fed dipole to play with.
Have expieramented with local comms on 10 meters before with not great results.
There is a reason (other than power limitations) that CB has not been really useful.

I know Steve, KE1HO in Bozeman and I have used 40 meters to sucessfully communicate between his QTH and mine in West Yellowstone during daytime hours.?
10m was interesting today for me. Had a QSO with a station in Rigby, ID, 85 miles away which is the same distance I am from Bozeman. I am assuming groundwave since my QSO before was 5200 miles away to Chile.
Anyways, I am always ready to play HF if anyone wants to experiment.

Hello Everyone,
?
From our Saturday morning coffee discussions and from the discussions here, it looks like we have plenty of interest to play with 10 meter.? This Thursday ( 1/16/25) @ 7:00 pm local time on 28.355+-, we will conduct a 10 meter net.? We will start on USB, where I will put together a list.? Then we will move modes to FM, to AM, then back to USB for discussion of all findings. I will conduct the net with the 4 element beam up 50'.? Now that I know Gus-WY7GUS and Wade-WA7YD will be playing, I will swing the beam your directions to try to pick you up and put you on the list.? Ronnie-hopefully your antenna will be done and up so you can play too!
?
Again, this net is open to ALL currently licensed hams.? It is a great exercise to learn your radio, learn HF propagation and modes, and to learn emergency communications.? Hope to hear you on the air!
