Thank you to everyone who was listening in to my activation yesterday. The wind was blowing pretty hard on the summit, which wreaked havoc on my mic. Also, it looks like it's time to upgrade my antenna since my Nagoya one didn't get out as well as I had hoped.

Does anyone have suggestions for better antennas and/or wind protection for a HT? It needs to be small enough to fit in my running vest.

Re: Hyalite Peak Activation - 8/11/24

Great pics, Spencer! As far as HT antennas are concerned, I use an ALS-9 antenna with my Anytone UV-whatever and it works great. Collapses down to about a foot, and extends to around 3 feet fully extended.Uses an SMA connector.?

As far as wind noise is concerned, do you use a Mic with your HT? I use one on all my HT's that I use on a regular basis (a couple of Anytone 878UV's, a Yaesu VX8, and an Icom-something I inherited from my Father-in-Law after he passed away). Using a Mic makes it much easier to mitigate wind noise.

Anyway, I'm glad you had good weather and a good climb. I climbed Hyalite Peak around 25 years ago. Today?I'm happy to make it to Grotto Falls. :}

Spencer,

I was in the same boat as Mickey, I could hear others mentioning that they made contact with you but couldn't hear your call.?

Re: recommendations for a HT antenna, I have a Nagoya 771 that is OK, but prefer the Signal Stick dual band with the BNC connector so I can easily swap out/disconnect for storage (SMA connectors can be a bit fragile):

Two bonus points (at least for me): Buying a Signal Stick antenna supports to get new hams on the air/up their license and the antenna is great for mobile scanners in the 150-512 Mhz range like the Bearcat 125at that I've got :)

Re: Hyalite Peak Activation - 8/11/24

Thanks, Spencer, for the early notice about your planned activation of Hyalite Peak!
For those of you interested in watching meteor showers, the Perseid is predicted to be at its peak near midnight Sunday, the 11th, and more likely visible (if no or?only spotty clouds) really early on Monday, the 12th. (During the last prediction in 2023, I saw it best 24 hours before the prediction.)
During the Net Meeting?on August 6th, you mentioned the meaning of the beeps during the Net. For reference, can you publish that information? Carol KA7ROL

I am planning on activating Hyalite Peak (W7M/HB-007) this coming Sunday, the 11th. The weather is looking a little so-so, and I need to get back to town pretty quickly, so I'm hoping to just activate on VHF/UHF. I'll call out on 146.52 as always, and I am planning on being on the summit by 0930 or earlier. Would love to work a whole bunch of you if possible.
?
Thanks!

Hey Don,

It went well! I managed 5 contacts (1 on 20m, 3 on 2m, and 1 on 70cm) on Sacajewa, and then 10 contacts (5 each on 20m and 2m) on Hardscrabble.

20m was very difficult, that band has not been great. I didn't try any other HF bands as my EFHW is cut for 20, and I didn't want to compromise my system any more than necessary.

I attached a couple of photos, I'll also drop them in the Facebook page.
