Re: Montana State University ARC Weekly/Monthly Events

Hello Caroline,

Please excuse the "out of the blue" interruption to your day.? My name is Lee Barrett.? My call is K7NM.? I am an MSU alumni - BSEE 1975 and MSEE 1977.? I retired in 2022 after a Cinderella career in Radio Broadcasting, Contract Engineer for the US Air Force and finally as a Vice President of R&D for Fresenius Medical Care.? I graduated high school at Bozeman Senior High.? My father was head of the Math Department for many years until his retirement.? I started work at the Electronic Research Lab in 1967 at MSU as a Junior in High School working for Bob Leo - W7LR (sk).? So I have a long history with EE at MSU - and was the W7YB president for several years.? I have a favor to ask if it is possible.

Are you at MSU again this year???

I will be in Bozeman from 2 October - 13 October and am curious if an Ex-W7YB president from 50 years ago might be able to use the station during a few days between 6 Oct - 12 Oct.? Probably 3 - 4 hours.? The last time I visited the station, the old Drake twins and the Henry amplifier were in pieces so I don't know if W7YB has any HF capability.?

Here's the issue.? For the past decade, I have been the 7th area call district primary station for the National Fire Prevention week special event operating as N7F.?

Confidentially, I was notified in June that I have been selected as an Electrical Engineering Distinguished Alumni for the College of Engineering this year and the award ceremony is on 4 October.? The following week on 11 October, I will be attending the first curriculum planning committee meeting for the Bio-Med Engineering program MSU is starting up.? So I need to be in Bozeman all that week.? So if I could operate a bit as N7F from the W7YB station, that would be cool.? But it is not the end of the world if it is not possible.? I do have alternative stations lined up - a few in MT, AZ and UT.?

Please let me know the status and how your are doing...? Again, sorry to drop in on you like this...

Kind regards,

Lee Barrett - K7NM

Hello all,

Now that students are settled into courses and routines, we have a solid MSU ARC schedule established.

Nets are open to the community -- we really appreciate it when Hams in the area join in!

Simplex Net on Monday Nights at 8:30 PM: 145.000 MHz primary frequency, 145.125 MHz back up frequency. The W7YB station has antennas on the roof of Cobleigh Hall, so we can usually cover most of Bozeman pretty easily.

Repeater Net on Thursday Nights at 8 PM: KI7XF Repeater.

Special events the afternoon/evening of the first Saturday of each month, starting October 7. This is something new we are trying -- we'd like to do some different things to keep people learning. Any suggestions for activities (antenna building, turning the Noodle sculpture into an antenna, foxhunting, etc.) or experienced Hams looking to give back by helping us learn something new would be welcome!

Inaugural Intercollegiate Chess Tournament: A chess tournament is being organized under the auspices of ARRL's Collegiate Amateur Radio Program. For these next three weeks, we will be playing one game a week (times made public when we know them!). For us, this will start with a match against Case Western Reserve University ARC on Sunday at 3:15 PM MDT, played over EchoLink (Node # 198430) due to planned station downtime at Case.

Again, we'd love to see the Bozeman community support our members in getting comfortable on the air and obtaining Ham Radio licenses!

Caroline (KI7AJB)

GHRC Thursday September 5th Meeting Presentation

73 to everyone,
Just wanted to get a quick note to all that Spencer will also be doing the presentation for September.? There was a request for this presentation which will be an open discussion:? Crazy Mountain 100 Comms details of the current Comms plan, what the near-future plan is and Spencer will open the floor to any ideas, questions, suggestions, etc.? I would like to give a heart-felt thank you to Spencer for all the presentations and the GHRC support that he has provided over the last several years.? As usual the club meeting will be held at the SAR Building in Bozeman with the business meeting starting at 1900 MDT (Thursday, September 5th) and the open discussion starting at1930 MDT.? Look forward to seeing everyone there.? Please find the zoom meeting invitation below for those that cannot attend in person.? Again - 73
